A Date for Thalia - Episode 1
by Kathleen Kreiser
I answer a FaceTime call from my twin sister, Jessie.
She looks anxious.
Thalia, I need a favor.
What is it?
I’ve been talking to this guy Nick on Tinder…
And we set up a date over FaceTime for tonight.
And…I kind of…double-booked my evening.
I need you to take this guy off my hands…
So I can concentrate on the other guy I made plans with.
I roll my eyes.
Oh my god.
Can’t you just reschedule?
I’ve already rescheduled twice!
I’m afraid he’ll blow me off if I do it again.
So will you please go on a FaceTime date with Nick tonight?
Um, no. Absolutely not.
After my last nightmare of a date…
And the one before that…
I’m never dating again.
I’m destined to be alone.
My personality drives guys away.
I just have to accept that.
All the more reason to go on this date.
I’m not following you.
Don’t you see? You’ll be pretending to be me!
That means you’ve got nothing to lose.
Hmm…maybe…
Jessie doesn’t wait for any further confirmation.
So…Nick’ll be calling you at eight.
I look at the clock.
It’s 7:59!
I’d better go then. Have fun!
I roll my eyes at her.
She hangs up before I can tell her that I hate her.
In seconds, my phone rings with a FaceTime call.
I groan.
I look at the screen.
There’s a picture of Nick.
And he’s…really hot.
I give myself a quick once-over in the mirror.
And then I answer.
Um…hi there.
Hey, Jessie.
Right. Jessie.
Nick looks confused.
You are Jessie, aren’t you?
I hope I didn’t call the wrong girl.
Nope. It’s…me alright.
Good.
I’m glad we’re finally talking face-to-face.
You can only text so much on Tinder.
Totally.
Though I do feel like I know you pretty well.
Um…what exactly do you know about me?
Well, I know you have a twin sister.
You talk about her a lot.
You said she’s kind of a dork.
My mouth opens wide in surprise.
Um…what did…
I…tell you about Thalia?
That she loves to bake.
And she’s obsessed with 80’s music.
And she has an award from a hot dog eating contest.
Is there an actual trophy?
Please tell me it’s shaped like a hot dog.
Oh…there’s a trophy.
My twin sister really does have a golden hot dog.
It’s on the shelf behind her bed.
Nick laughs.
Wow, I really led with her strengths, didn’t I?
Actually, I think it’s impressive.
Really?
Totally. I like a girl with an appetite.
We’re quiet for a second.
Quick. New topic.
So…
You like that movie?
I open my mouth to answer…
And quickly realize I don’t know which movie he’s talking about.
You’ve got a Dirty Dancing poster behind you.
Oh, right.
I turn my phone so he can see it.
It’s my favorite.
Mine too.
Really?
I mean if any of my guy friends ask…
I tell them it’s Star Wars.
But secretly…
You want to rescue Baby from that corner?
Exactly.
I know it’s a lie, but…
Sometimes a little lie is necessary, right?
If only he knew.
Totally agree.
I smile at him and he smiles back.
an hour later
Nick and I have been talking and laughing nonstop.
You’re really easy to talk to, Nick.
I sit on my bed, propped up against the pillows.
This is like…hanging out with a friend.
Friend?
I thought this was a date.
I blush.
It is…
I’m just glad it’s not awkward. That’s all.
I lean back a little.
Me too…
Nick’s voice trails off.
He looks like he’s distracted by something behind me.
I look around, trying to figure out what.
Hey, is that…
He points.
That’s the golden hot dog, isn’t it?
Um…
Why do you have Thalia’s trophy?
I wrack my brain for an explanation.
Jessie?
Nick, I have to come clean.
I’m not Jessie. I’m actually Thalia.
I know this is so crazy.
But everything Jessie told you about me is true.
Really? Everything?
Yes! Everything. I am a major dork.
My kitchen looks like Keebler elf central.
I have every Bon Jovi and Madonna album ever.
And, well…you’ve seen the trophy.
So, what’s going on here?
Jessie asked you to fill in for her on this date?
I nod.
Yeah, she double-booked.
And she wanted to see the other guy…
More than she wanted to see me.
That’s really flattering.
I’m sorry.
Are you…mad?
I feel like I should be, but…I’m actually not.
I had a really good time tonight.
So did I.
Wait…what was Jessie going to do if you and I hit it off?
I don’t know.
Knowing my sister, I don’t think she thought of that.
I’d really like to do this again, Thalia.
With you. Not your sister.
No twin-switching anymore.
I’d like to see you again, too.
Great!
Sweet dreams, Thalia.
You too, Nick.
Nick winks at me and we end the call.
I immediately FaceTime my sister…
And she answers on the first ring.
Someone looks happy.
I hate you.
But…also I love you.
I had an awesome FaceTime date with Nick.
Yes!! I knew you’d like each other.
I furrow my brow.
I’m starting to get the feeling…
That you weren’t double-booked tonight…
And that this was a set-up.
Guilty as charged.
When Nick and I were texting…
I knew you two were made for each other.
And I also knew you wouldn’t talk to him unless I forced you into it.
Well, can you blame me?
Most guys don’t go for weird girls like me.
Nick’s not most guys.
Yeah. He’s really not.
So, next time you talk to him…
Tell him I said hi.
And Thalia?
What?
You’re welcome.
I can’t help giving Jessie a big smile.
Okay, okay.
Then I roll my eyes at her…
And end the call.
