A Deadly Game - Episode 4
by James Kriz
Desmond and I keep trudging through the forest.
Exhausted.
We arrive at the edge of Creek Park.
It’s on the south end of town.
And it’s usually pretty empty.
I check my cellphone.
10:45.
Oh god. I’m running out of time!
Desmond is silent.
He won’t even look at me.
Desmond!
I didn’t hurt Nick!
I’m innocent.
Then tell me what’s going on!
I sigh.
I have no choice.
And besides, we’re alone.
How would the kidnapper ever find out that I told Desmond the truth?
This morning, I got a message that Nick was kidnapped.
It said that I needed to find him by noon…
Or the kidnapper would kill him.
How do I know you’re telling me the truth?
Seriously, Desmond?!
I’m your friend.
I wouldn’t lie to you.
If you say so.
What do you mean?
It’s just…in class, we’re friends.
But when we aren’t in there…
When we’re walking in the halls and stuff…
It’s like I don’t exist.
You spend all your time with Nick.
He’s my boyfriend!
That doesn’t make me feel any better.
Why?
Because I’m in love with you.
My jaw drops.
A few moments pass.
The silence is overwhelming.
I have to say something.
I care about you too.
But Desmond…only as a friend.
Could we ever be anything more?
I mean like, after we save Nick.
Say you two don’t stay together forever.
And you become single again—
No.
What’s wrong with me?
You’re wonderful, Desmond.
But I just don’t have those kinds of feelings for you.
Desmond looks ready to cry.
I’m sorry.
Don’t be…
It’s not your fault.
Look, Desmond, you don’t have to keep helping me.
But I really hope you will.
Because this is hard.
And I could really use a friend right now.
Desmond hesitates.
But then he forces a smile.
Okay. I’ll keep helping.
And you believe me when I say I’m not guilty?
Desmond stares at me.
There’s sincerity in his eyes.
Yes.
Thank you.
I pause, blowing out a breath.
Because I think we have a problem.
We left the motel room without finding a clue.
And we can’t go back there.
The police are definitely swarming the place.
Hmm, that’s true.
Maybe I could sneak in there on my own?
I shake my head.
Too risky.
What about the note?
Could that be a clue in itself?
I recite the words from the note…
This game is the kind that can never be won.
What could it mean?
The words from the note keep playing through my mind.
Something seems so familiar about them.
Suddenly, I realize what it is.
It’s a quote from a historical nonfiction book!
This obscure one about Eliza Shaw.
Who?
Seriously?
Come on. You know you’re a bigger history nerd.
I smile despite myself.
Eliza Shaw was a famous spy from the Revolutionary War.
I did an essay on her last year.
There’s only one copy of her biography in this whole town…
And it’s at the public library.
So we better head over there.
Maybe it’s in the book!
But just as we are about to head off, my phone buzzes.
Tick.
Tock.
It’s 11 o’clock 👯‍♀️
1 hour left!
15 minutes later
We arrive at the library.
It’s nearly empty.
So I relax.
It’s unlikely anyone will see me here.
Desmond whispers to me.
Where is the book?
The basement archives.
I head towards the basement with Desmond by my side.
We pass by a reference desk.
As we do, I hear an announcement playing from a television.
In local news, Dayton High School star quarterback Nick Brown has been abducted.
The prime suspect is his girlfriend, Emma Johnson.
Police are asking locals to keep their eyes open as the hunt for her continues…
I grab Desmond’s arm and pull him forward with me as I speed up.
I anxiously glance back at the reference desk.
There is a woman working behind it.
Did she recognize me?
I’m panicking as Desmond and I reach the entrance to the basement.
We’re about to take the stairs down.
Desmond stops me.
He motions to the bathroom.
I have to pee really badly…
Right now?
I’ve had to go for like an hour.
I can’t hold it in any longer.
Not my fault I have the world’s tiniest bladder.
Desmond smirks goofily.
I almost laugh.
For a moment, I’m almost unaware of the hellish situation I’m in.
Then reality sinks back in…
Okay hurry!
Meet me in the basement.
10 minutes later
The basement it is dusty and dark.
And I’m all alone.
Searching through a maze of bookshelves…
But eventually, I find the book.
I take it off the shelf.
I start skimming through it, searching for the page with the quote.
And then, I hear footsteps coming towards me.
I anxiously look up.
But it’s only Desmond.
He looks nervous, though.
This place is super creepy, Emma.
I know.
What if the kidnapper is down here?
My anxiety rises at the thought.
It’s definitely possible.
But I brush away the comment.
Guess I better find the next clue quickly.
I go back to skimming through the book.
I find the page with the quote on it.
“This game is the kind that can never be won.”
The only problem is…
I don’t see a clue written anywhere.
Did you find it?
What’s the next clue?
I don’t know.
I can see the wheels turning in Desmond’s head.
Emma, what if this is a trap?
What if the kidnapper lured us down here for a reason?
What do you mean?
Maybe this whole game is rigged…
You know, so that we lose.
And they win.
All of a sudden, I hear…
Police sirens!
They’re coming from outside.
My heart sinks.
Above us, we hear shouting.
The police have entered the building.
We need to run!
The footsteps pound toward the entrance to the basement.
The police must be close.
We’re trapped.
Maybe we should just turn ourselves in…
If we explain things to the police, maybe they could help us find Nick.
No!
Follow me—
I know a secret way out!
I sprint down the aisles.
Desmond struggles to follow.
He’s barely keeping up.
The police enter the basement.
Shouting.
Telling us to stop running.
But I can’t give up.
Not now.
I reach the secret exit.
It’s an old door that leads from the basement to a back alley.
I open the door—
But I hear a scream come from behind me.
It’s Desmond.
He must have been caught.
Go!
Keep running!
I reluctantly hurry out the door.
Not wanting to leave Desmond behind.
But having no choice.
I step into the alley.
And I sprint off as fast as I can…
