A Deadly Game - Episode 5
by James Kriz
It’s now 11:30.
I have a half an hour to save Nick.
So I go back to the park—
The only safe place to hide.
I sit with my back against a tree.
And skim through the book.
I’m searching and searching…
But I can’t find a clue.
This book is a dead end.
Maybe Desmond’s right.
Maybe the game is rigged.
And the kidnapper never really gave me a chance to win…
Oh god.
I’m never going to see Nick alive again.
If only I had picked up when Nick called me before school…
Suddenly, I realize something.
I never listened to the voicemail Nick left me this morning!
What if there’s a clue in it?
I quickly pull it up in my phone.
And I listen…
Nick’s voice is trembling with sadness.
Emma…
I can’t think straight.
Not when I know you’re upset at me.
I wish you’d pick up.
Nick sucks in a breath.
And I hear the humming of his car engine.
He must be driving to school.
I know these past weeks have been hard.
And I know what I said last night hurt you.
I shouldn’t have said I didn’t love you anymore.
I was angry.
And I didn’t mean it.
Nick sucks in a breath.
He lets it out.
Because I do love you, Emma.
God, I love everything about you.
You’re brilliant. And you can make anyone feel special.
And I just…I can’t imagine my life without you.
Please call me when you get this.
Nick's phone clanks against the cupholder in his car.
But the humming noise continues.
He didn’t actually hang up!
The voicemail is still recording.
I keeping listening, gripping the phone.
But there’s nothing but that humming noise.
And then…
Nick gasps.
Stop the car.
Or I’ll shoot—
I pull back the phone in shock.
Desmond?
Desmond set this whole thing up??
I start to think it through.
It all starts to make sense.
Desmond wanted to kill Nick.
He was jealous of our relationship…
That had to be his motive.
It then dawns on me where Nick might be hidden.
In Desmond’s shed.
Desmond basically lives in it.
He does all his science projects there.
We even built that robot there years ago.
And it’s tucked away in the woods.
Where no one can find it.
Plus, Desmond was wearing his work boots today.
Because he went to the shed this morning.
And that means Nick’s got to be there too.
11:50 AM
I arrive at Desmond’s house.
I quickly scan the scene.
No cars in the driveway.
No one is home.
I run past his house.
Desmond lives on a farm.
So I run into the cornfield on his property.
The stalks hide me.
But they could hide someone else too.
I stay alert.
Ready for danger.
Finally, I see the shed.
It’s far, far ahead of me.
I sprint towards it.
Full speed.
I hope I’m right.
Because I’m almost out of time.
I reach the shed.
I try to open the door.
But it’s locked.
I check the time.
11:59.
I kick the door.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
CRACK.
It bursts open.
I find Nick.
He’s tied to a chair.
Gagged.
Struggling against his ropes.
Exhausted.
Beaten down.
My heart breaks at the sight of him.
A bandage is wrapped around his left hand.
Where his pinky finger was cut off.
Nick!
Hang on!
I ungag him and start to untie him.
Nick struggles to speak.
Emma…
How did you find me?
I keep working at the ropes.
I struggle to loosen the knots holding his feet in place.
It’s a long story.
We don’t have time for that right now.
And then I hear a voice behind me.
Stop untying him.
Or I’ll shoot.
I hear a click as he cocks the pistol.
I stop.
Put your hands up and turn around.
Moving slowly, I follow his instructions.
And when I’m face to face with Desmond…
He’s pointing the gun right at me.
He starts walking forward.
Closing in.
And then he stops just a few feet away.
You’re clever, Emma.
You figured out the truth.
But that’s not going to matter.
Because I already told you.
This game is one that can never be won.
And I have enough bullets to kill both you and Nick.
Desmond, don’t—
You don’t have to do this.
Yes I do.
Why?
Because years ago, before you and Nick started dating…
I told Nick how I felt about you.
I told him I wanted to ask you to the Homecoming dance.
But he beat me to it.
He asked you first.
And you said yes to him.
After you two went to the dance together…
You kissed at Holly Point that night.
I watched you guys, secretly.
Because that kiss should have been mine.
After that, you and Nick started dating.
You fell in love.
For years, I’ve had to deal with the pain of knowing he had you.
And I didn’t.
That he stole you from me.
Desmond, no!
I’m sorry if I hurt you…
But please, punish me.
Not Emma.
Leave her out of this!
Desmond grins devilishly.
No can do.
Originally, my plan was to abduct Nick, and kill him.
And as for you, Emma…
You and I would do the scavenger hunt together.
And when we didn’t win…
When we were caught by the police…
I would provide evidence that cleared your name.
I was going to pin Nick’s murder on someone else.
You were going to be so grateful that I saved you from going to jail.
And with Nick gone…
We would have finally been together.
No! I’d never date you.
You made that very clear today.
So I decided that, if I couldn’t have you…
No one else ever would.
I was going to get you arrested for the rest of your life.
That’s why I called the police at the library.
I told them that you had coerced me into helping you.
But you were lucky.
I didn’t know you had a secret escape route.
Desmond steps a little closer.
His gun is still pointed at my chest.
There’s still one thing I don’t understand though…
How did you send me the creepy texts from that other number?
You were with me the whole time.
I move forward, ever so slightly.
Maybe if I can get close enough…
I can grab the gun from Desmond’s hands.
I created a program that sent pre-planned texts to you.
At specific times throughout the day.
It was genius.
This is sick, Desmond.
Maybe so…
But my plan worked.
I smile.
Not exactly.
A wail of sirens sounds.
Because I called the police on my way here.
And told them where to find me.
Shock grips Desmond.
He quickly turns, looking for the police—
And I leap forward.
Knocking him over.
He drops the gun.
I reach for it.
So does he.
But I grab it first.
I point it at him.
Desmond freezes.
Don’t move, or I shoot.
10 minutes later
The police officers handcuff and haul off Desmond.
While Nick and I stand nearby.
Watching.
And holding on to each other like there’s no tomorrow.
I look up at him.
It feels so good to stare into his soft brown eyes.
Emma, I’m sorry…
So am I.
For all the fighting.
But it’s behind us, Nick.
Because all I can think about right now…
Is how much I love you.
Nick smiles gently.
Leaning into me.
I love you too.
We kiss for so long I’m sure it’s never going to end.
And when it stops…
We kiss again.
