Angie's New Roommate - Episode 1
by Kathleen Kreiser
My brother really needs a place to stay, Angie.
Can he stay with you?
Please!
It’s only for a couple of months.
You’ll barely notice he’s there.
No! Come on, Maddy!
I finally have my own apartment.
And I really like living on my own.
So you can keep licking your wounds over Nathan?
No! I’m over him, I swear.
How long has it been since you broke up with him?
A year and a half.
Geez, how have you not died of sexual starvation?
Nathan cheating on me kind of turned me off to relationships.
I see…
So it’s a good time for Jude to be here, then.
How do you figure?
You’re not looking to hook up.
And he’s readjusting to civilian life.
Civilian life?
He’s been honorably discharged from the Marines.
Oh wow!
It seems like he just JOINED the Marines.
Nope, it’s already been four years.
Man, a lot has changed for your little brother.
Yeah, he’s really grown up.
So, bottom line, can he stay with you?
Please. I’ll owe you one.
Ugh. Fine.
I guess I can let him stay here.
Look at you, servicing your countryman.
You make it sound so dirty.
Which brings me to my next point.
Please. Whatever you do…
Do NOT sleep with him.
Uh…no problem.
I’m serious, Angie. Don’t do it.
Jude once shoved a tadpole into my shorts.
Trust me. I’m not interested in him.
Okay, then. I’ll send him over.
Wait…right now?
He’s on his way.
We end the call.
Just a few minutes later, the doorbell rings.
Great. Just great.
I’m about to start living with immature, annoying prankster Jude Latham.
My best friend’s kid brother, and a thorn in my side.
It wasn’t just the tadpole that made me hate Jude.
It was him cutting my doll’s hair off.
And teasing me about my glasses.
And always trying to peek at my underwear.
I open the door.
Standing there is six feet of soldier.
Broad shoulders. Solid muscle. All man.
What on earth happened to little Jude Latham?!
Angie? Is everything okay?
Um, you grew up.
Sorry. That’s a weird thing to say.
Jude laughs.
It’s not a mean laugh, but it gets to me.
It’s true. I did grow up.
Yeah. Good job.
Oh geez, what’s gotten into me?
My face turns scarlet and Jude laughs some more.
His voice is deep and it makes me shiver.
Thanks for letting me stay here.
Oh. Sure.
He’s so polite.
I definitely don’t remember Jude Latham being polite.
The Marines taught you some manners, I see.
Yes, ma’am. Certainly did.
Now Jude is staring at me.
Like, really staring.
He smiles at me. I bite my lip.
Um, Angie? You think I can I come in?
Yeah. Of course.
How big of an idiot can I be?
Your room’s the one on the left.
I still need to get it set up for you.
But you can put your stuff in there.
Cool. Where’s your shower?
Shower?
You know, the place with the water.
Where you clean yourself.
I’ve been on two planes and a bus.
I probably smell gross.
No, you don’t, actually.
Are you smelling me, Angie?
Of course not.
Bathroom’s that way.
Thanks. And Angie?
Yeah?
Thanks for letting me stay here.
I promise to be the model roommate.
No loud parties. Clean up after myself.
No trying to peek at my underwear anymore?
I mean it as a joke, but it doesn’t land.
I can’t read the look on Jude’s face.
It’s just…intense.
I can’t promise that, Angie.
I gasp.
Did he really just say that?
He heads for the bathroom.
The water runs.
Jude is in my shower.
Which means he’s…showering.
What the heck has Madison signed me up for?
I call her, ready to scream.
Why didn’t you tell me your brother got…
Got what?
Hot.
The answer is HOT.
But I can’t bring myself to say it.
Ew, I knew it.
You’re lusting after my brother.
This is terrible.
He was way too excited about seeing you again.
Really? Why?
Doesn’t matter.
Angie, you promised me!
I know.
This is just because you haven’t gotten any in a while.
Maybe.
I’ll be over later. We’re going out.
For now, remember the tadpole, Angie.
Right. The tadpole.
Remember the tadpole.
What’s the tadpole?
I turn around and practically drop the phone.
Jude’s wearing a towel.
Only a towel.
Angie, did you hear me?
What’s the tadpole?
Um…you put a tadpole down my shorts once.
I did?
When we were kids.
Are you still mad about it?
Because I did a lot of stuff back then to get your attention.
To get my attention?
I don’t know if you noticed, but…
I had a big crush on you back then.
I thought you hated me!
Not even a little.
I was crazy about you.
I’d do anything to get your attention.
Even if it ticked me off?
Attention was attention. I wasn’t picky.
I watch a drop of water roll down his neck.
To his collarbone.
Down his chest.
To where his towel hangs.
Want to know a secret, Angie?
Uh-huh.
He moves in closer.
I feel the heat coming off of him.
It makes me dizzy.
Nothing’s changed.
What?
Jude, we haven’t seen each other in years.
Doesn’t matter.
I know what I felt back then.
And I know that when I was in combat…
And I got hurt and they dug shrapnel out of my leg…
And I’d never serve again…
That it was all going to be okay.
You did?
Because it meant I could see you again.
I swallow hard.
Jude is an inch away from me.
He reaches for me and touches my cheek.
Angie, please let me kiss you.
I…
He leans in.
I feel his breath on me.
He’s so close.
There’s knock at the door.
Who’s that?
Madison.
Ignore it.
Jude, she’s my best friend.
And your sister!
And we’re supposed to go out tonight.
She wants me to meet a guy.
Jude growls.
It’s animal. Possessive, even.
I shouldn’t like it, but I do.
Fine. I’ll go get dressed.
I’ll put on a happy face in front of my sister.
Good.
And when you get home tonight, I’ll be waiting for you.
Because this isn’t over, Angie.
Not by a long shot.
