Beneath Your Mask - Episode 5
by Chris Marie Green
SOS!
Nightwing texted, but I think I’ve got too many hormones and beer in me right now to resist him!
Um, weren’t you at your Mom’s for dinner?
I understand where the beer might’ve come in but…what about the hormones?
It’s a long story that involves Mom’s new “serious” boyfriend and his three sons.
WHOA. Heather’s first orgy?
You wish. I had a beer with one of the sons.
And by “beer” you mean that you Nightwinged him?
You’re having an amazing week!
Nothing like that went on with Connor.
Jeez, his dad is dating my mom.
I’m just saying he was cute — REALLY cute — and he got my motor running.
For NIGHTWING.
Um…I kinda want to keep talking about this Connor guy.
No thanks. I know he was just messing with me when he asked me out for a drink.
Squee!
No. He’s WAY out of my league.
Don’t say that.
It’s true. What hot guy would hit on me when I’m not in my Captain America get up?
In case you forgot, there are guys who’ve been into you when you’re not dressed up.
Yeah, but it never lasts.
Once they find out that I’m just being outgoing when I first meet them…it’s done.
Sigh.
Are you ready to talk about Nightwing now?
I’m here.
Okay. So Nightwing asked me what other costumes I have…
So that tells me he’s fine with another cosplay encounter.
He obviously doesn’t want anything more than that.
Ergo, he agrees with me about keeping it all fantasy, no reality.
A minute passes.
Jen?
Don’t get me wrong — because I still think you should get yourself some Nightwing…
But you’re only running toward that fantasy because a real guy hit on you tonight.
I just think you’ve got an opening here, Heather.
It’s obvious you’re interested in Connor…
Nope.
God, your last breakup really made those shields creep back up again!
Maybe it did. Anything else you want to school me on?
As a matter of fact, yes.
Not too long ago, I was lying to MYSELF about how I truly felt about Adam.
I was scared to death to step out of my fantasies about him.
I couldn’t confront the reality of how crazy we were about each other.
That was different.
HOW?
And YOU were the one who lectured me about how I was blowing it with him!
That’s why I finally dropped my defenses and went for it. I haven’t looked back since.
You can do the same thing, Heather!
Heather looks out the window at the passing city.
She swallows back the emotion in her throat.
Jen, unlike you, I’m not looking for love. I don’t need it.
I wasn’t built for it.
All I want is a little more superhero action, and then I’m moving on.
Okay. Then go get it.
But this whole costume thing is bound to get real old for you.
Someday you’re going to realize you need something more.
Whatever. Heather knows that she’s just fine on her own.
With her pulse throbbing, she opens the thread with Nightwing and texts him.
You want to know what other costumes I’ve got?
I just happen to have a closet full of them…
And some are villains you’re constantly chasing.
THERE she is.
I thought you might be ignoring me tonight, even after you made all those soft, little sounds for me at that party.
Heather blows out an agitated breath.
She just wants fantasy, not reality…
But back to those costumes…
What do you want to know about them?
I’m just fantasizing about what you’d look like in other super suits.
And I also can’t help obsessing about what you’d look like OUT of them.
Oh boy…
I wasn’t talking about stripping the costumes off of you, even though…
YES.
I was talking about what you might look like in real life.
I keep imagining you as someone who’s a boss, and that’s such a turn on.
I thought real life was out of bounds with us. But…
Sinking down in the car’s backseat, Heather bites her lip and stirs in restless longing.
Maybe I’ll throw you just one hint.
Do it, Cap. Make me happy like I made YOU happy the other night.
Heather flushes from her head to her toes.
All right. I work in an office, although someday I’d like to run my own business.
I’ve got an idea for a geek hangout app…
Never mind. My last boyfriend never wanted to hear about it.
The guy who had you so bummed out at the costume party?
Stop dwelling on him.
I told you your ex must’ve been insane to let you go.
Jeez, you sure know how to talk to the ladies. Where did you learn that?
You know me, Cap. I’ve had encounters with a lot of women, both good and evil.
Said the hottest superhero ever.
I’m serious.
And I’m tired of going from one girl to the next.
Heather’s heart thuds and pumps, marking the seconds as they go by.
What is he trying to tell her?
Are you still speaking for Nightwing?
Or is this reality again?
Something about you intrigues me…
It draws me in, but I can’t put my finger on it.
That’s the real reason I can’t stop thinking about you, Cap.
Heather panics. She feels her shields go up.
Hah-hah. I’m pretty sure you just can’t stop thinking about what we DID at that party.
As amazing as that was, you’re wrong. This isn’t about sex.
It’s always about sex. I’M sure that you’re just seeing a fantasy.
You don’t know me, and that’s how it’s got to stay.
Okay. Then if you want more fantasy, I’ve got a place for us to meet tomorrow night.
What do you say, Cap?
Heather holds the phone close to her chest as if it can slow down her pounding heart.
Should she risk another skin-to-skin encounter with Nightwing?
Or should she play it safe on her own…?
