Blank Canvas - Episode 1
by Eric Levin
Hey Josh, you don’t have to respond if you’re still mad at me…
Why would I be mad?
Maybe because I dumped you three months ago?
I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t ever want to hear from me again.
I’m a guy, Penny. Three months IS forever in guy years.
I can put it behind me.
Okay, good to know!
That’s a bit of a relief, actually.
Why’s that?
I know this is gonna sound weird…
But I was wondering if you know anyone who needs some quick cash.
Maybe one of the guys on the team?
I’m always broke. How bout me?
What do I gotta do?
LOL NOT YOU.
Definitely not you.
WHY NOT :((((
Trust me.
You wouldn’t like it.
You can’t dump me twice, so it can’t be THAT bad.
Lay it on me.
Do I gotta help you move a couch?
Paint your parent’s house?
Something physical, I assume. Right?
Well…
Kinda, but not really?
It’s for my art class.
But I’m telling you now, you really won’t like it.
Oh, I see how it is.
Josh plays football, so he can’t like art?
Is that your logic?
No, you can like art. Of course you can.
Then why can’t you tell me?
Ugh, FINE.
My teacher is having a series of classes dedicated to form study.
You know, sketching people?
Yeah…
And each class, a different student is responsible for finding a model.
Okay…
You really don’t see where this is going?
It’s my turn to find someone for our session.
But seriously, I’m telling you this is NOT for you.
All I’m hearing is easy money.
Well, yeah but…
You’ll have to pose for the WHOLE class.
You think I can’t stay still?
IT’S NUDE MODELING, OKAY?
Oh snap!
See, I knew you wouldn’t be down.
There’d be a bunch of guys and girls looking at you.
So?
So you’ll have to be totally exposed!
A lot of people would be very uncomfortable.
That’s because a lot of people don’t have this body :D
Ha. Ha. Very funny.
Anyways, just ask some of your teammates.
Like Aaron or Dan. Scott even.
Just someone I haven’t dated!
What’s the pay?
$100.
FOR JUST ONE HOUR??
Forget Aaron and Dan.
I’ve got your model right here, baby.
When and where do I gotta be naked??
UGH.
Josh…
I don’t think you know what you’re signing up for.
Yeah I do.
It’ll be the easiest hundred dollars I’ll ever make.
When and where’s the class?
The next day
Penny meets Josh outside.
Her art class is inside, preparing for its session.
Josh is still clothed, but Penny’s heart is hammering.
I’m not gonna lie, Penny. I’m getting nervous.
Really?
Because if you wanna bail…I’d totally understand.
PSYCH!
I’m not nervous at all!
Let’s do this and get me PAID.
Are you sure about this?
Because if you need money, I could lend you cash.
You wouldn’t even have to pay me back right away.
You really don’t have to do this.
I said I’d do it. I’m here, aren’t I?
Are YOU unsure about it?
No. Why would you say that?
You basically just offered me $100 to NOT model for your class.
And you’ve been messaging me nonstop about how I don’t have to do this.
Do you really not want me around?
No, it’s not that!
Then what the hell is the problem?
It’s just weird for me, okay?
You’re the one who asked me!
I wasn’t asking YOU. Not directly.
I never thought you’d want to do this!
Is this because you’ve never seen me naked?
Penny looks down and blushes.
N-no! Of course not.
Because I won’t do it if you feel uncomfortable.
No, Josh. I’m a professional.
I just…
Penny blows out her next words quickly, in a muffled breath.
I wanted to see you naked.
What was that?
At one point, I DID want to see you naked. Happy?
Like, back when we were dating.
And I don’t want it to be like now, I’m forcing you to strip.
Especially since I broke up with YOU.
Josh beams, but then he smothers his smile.
His eyes go soft, like he’s holding Penny’s heart in them.
Penny. I’m doing this because I want to, not because I feel pressured.
You’re sure?
I’m getting paid. I’m doing a job, right?
…right.
So I’m a professional, just like you.
Right. I mean, you are.
I don’t know why I didn’t think of it like that.
Well, you’re not supposed to date coworkers.
Thank God I dumped you, right?
Haha, yeah.
There’s an awkward moment where they both avoid each other’s eyes.
I know I’m not supposed to talk during the hour, so can I ask you something?
Before I go in there?
What’s up?
After this is all said and done…can you show me what you drew?
Only if you promise not to tell the guys about any of this.
Deal.
Five minutes later
From behind her easel, Penny watches as the instructor walks in.
He’s followed by Josh, who’s in a fluffy white bathrobe.
The other students quiet down. They take out their pencils.
The instructor leads Josh onto a platform, only a few feet away from Penny’s seat.
He tells Josh to disrobe. Josh obeys.
The studio fills with the scratching of pencils over sketchpads.
Except for Penny, who stares transfixed, blushing.
Josh hides a smirk.
Finally, Penny begins to sketch.
The next afternoon.
Josh is waiting for Penny on a park bench.
He’s holding a small box.
Finally, he sees her approach.
There she is! Penny Picasso.
You got something for me?
You sure you want to see it?
It’s nothing I haven’t seen before.
I don’t know…
It’s not my best work.
What’s with the box?
That’s why I asked if you had something for me…
Because I have something for you.
Josh hands her the box. She opens it.
Inside are brand new charcoals, pastels, brushes, and a sharpener.
Josh, what is all this?!
I used my $100 from modeling to buy you new supplies.
Can’t be the next Picasso with old equipment.
I thought you needed the money!
I did. To impress you.
Penny gives Josh a hug.
That was really sweet!
Josh grabs her bag.
Come on, let me see it!
Josh, no!
He opens the bag and stares at her sketch.
Damn Pen…
This…is amazing.
Penny blushes, shocked by his sincerity.
It’s like looking in the mirror.
How’d you get so good at this?
It’s the same way you’re good at football…
Practice.
Let me know if you need me to model again.
Actually, we’ll need one on Tuesday.
You wouldn’t mind if it’s me?
Not at all.
Same time, same place?
It’s a date.
