Blood On The Shore - Episode 2
by Phyllis Korkki
What?! Why would they think that Trevor killed Mr. Cassidy?
Because a whole bunch of people saw them arguing this morning.
The two of them were in Mr. Cassidy’s office.
But just because they argued doesn’t mean…
Mom, it gets worse.
After they fought, Mr. Cassidy left the office. He was mad.
He slammed the door and went out back to the shore.
And tons of people saw Trevor follow him out there!
That’s the last anyone saw EITHER of them alive.
There is a long pause.
Mom, say something!!
Do you know what Trevor was going to talk to Mr. Cassidy about?
No.
That does look bad for Trevor.
What? Do you think he’s guilty too?!
I didn’t say that. I just said it LOOKS bad.
And meanwhile, what if he’s lying somewhere?
The same killer could have killed him!
They should be searching the lake.
I’m going out there…
Chloe, that would be dangerous.
And even if he is out there, there’s almost no way you could find him.
But Trevor and I…
What??
…I’ll tell you later.
Are you…more than friends?
Mom, I can’t get into that right now with you.
Okay, but don’t go out to the lake.
Alright, but can you come out here?
Maybe you can find out what’s going on.
Alright, but I need to talk to Anna first.
This is going to be a tough phone call.
I can already tell you think he might have done it!
Chloe, I—
At least Trevor’s mom will be on my side.
Look, I’ll be there in about twenty minutes.
We can talk about it then.
Helen dials Anna’s number.
Did you find Trevor?
No.
Anna, there’s no easy way to say this.
What?
Helen, you’re scaring me…
Apparently the police—
Oh my baby!! Is Trevor dead??
No, stop Anna! It looks like Trevor is alive.
Oh thank God!
But—
But what??
The cops think Trevor killed Frank Cassidy.
And that he’s in hiding.
There is a long silence as Anna processes the new information.
Helen, you know Trevor.
How can that possibly be true?
I know, Anna.
Helen tells Anna what Chloe told her about the argument between Frank Cassidy and Trevor.
Anna, are you sure Trevor didn’t tell you what he was going to talk to Mr. Cassidy about?
No, he just said it was going to be a really hard conversation.
I’m so scared, Helen.
I don’t know WHAT to think.
But I do know that Trevor is NOT a killer.
Listen, I’m going to the lodge now and find out what’s going on.
Yes, thank you—please find out all you can, Helen.
I will.
I’m jumping in my car right now.
I know I said I’d wait until tomorrow to come up there…
But this has gotten too far out of control. I need to find my baby!
I should be there in about five hours. Four if I really speed.
Be careful!
I will. Call me if you hear ANYTHING.
Of course. I love you, Anna.
I love you too, Helen. Thanks again.
We’ll get to the bottom of this. I promise.
Helen sighs as she hangs up. She needs to do this for Anna and Chloe,
But the last thing she wants is to be thrown back into a murder case.
She’s on disability leave from being injured in a shootout in Minneapolis
And still walks with a slight limp.
She came to the resort town of Grand Marais to be with her daughter and recover.
Helen heads over to the lodge.
Chloe is out front.
She throws herself into her mother’s arms.
Mom—I can’t handle this!
Think how Mr. Cassidy’s wife must feel.
No, his wife died a few years ago in a car accident.
Oh, that’s right. Now I remember.
At least she didn’t have to be here for this.
Mr. Cassidy was devastated after Grace died.
He just threw himself into the lodge after the accident.
Did he have kids?
No. Not before he married Grace.
But he’s always treated Grace’s daughter, Deirdre, as if she were his own.
He paid for her law school tuition.
And now she’s a big-shot attorney in Duluth.
Wait—are you talking about Deirdre Lane?
Yes.
I had no idea.
Yeah. She always stopped by to visit him.
And she told me she owes her success to him.
What a good man.
Just then a police officer steps outside and Chloe motions him to come over.
This is Officer Coleman. I’ve already told him all I know.
I’m Chloe’s mother, Helen Olsson.
I used to work for the police department in Minneapolis.
And I’m an old friend of Trevor Bain’s mother.
Well, I’m sorry to tell you that Trevor Bain is our lead suspect right now.
But I told you: He didn’t do this!
He doesn’t have a violent bone in his body.
That’s not how it looked this morning.
He seemed pretty angry.
I… I’m sure there’s a good reason for that.
We’re conducting a sweep of the area right now.
We hope to have Trevor Bain in custody soon.
When I was a cop, we were taught to look at all possible suspects.
Oh yeah? Well this case seems pretty cut and dried.
The officer walks off and Helen turns to her daughter, speaking in a soothing voice.
At least if Trevor’s injured, they’ll find him.
And then put him in jail!
Chloe starts crying.
Chloe, I know you and Trevor have been friends for years.
But…you seem more upset than I expected.
Is he…more to you than friends?
Yes, Mom. We are.
Because I’m pregnant, and Trevor is the father.
