Blood On The Shore - Episode 4
by Phyllis Korkki
Chloe heads straight for her dad’s arms.
Hey, Punk!
Oh my God, Dad, stop. I told you not to call me that anymore.
Sorry, no can do. Would you prefer Punkin?
No!
Then Chloe pulls out of the hug, whispering in his ear.
I’m so glad you’re here.
Matt turns and looks into Helen’s face.
Helen struggles to find her voice.
Hi Matt.
Helen met Matt in the police academy.
They had a fling, but then Helen became pregnant with Chloe.
Helen and Matt got married for the sake of their daughter.
Shortly after Chloe was born, though,
They got divorced.
They just weren’t ready for marriage.
Matt remarried his childhood sweetheart a year after divorcing Helen.
But he divorced her two years ago.
Hi Helen. You look surprised to see me.
But Anna asked me to come.
I have some time coming, so I took the rest of the week off.
Thanks, Matt. It means a lot.
Matt continues to look at Helen,
Awaiting her approval.
Yes, thanks for coming, Matt.
Dad, I know you and Mom can find Trevor together.
Should we go out and look for him now?
Matt is a detective in the Twin Cities.
He and Helen used to cross paths at the station.
The two have stayed friendly, if somewhat distant.
That’s the way Helen has wanted it.
I think it would be best if we all got some sleep first.
Matt, I guess it’s too late for you to get a hotel.
Mom! A hotel? It’s Dad!!
Helen keeps her eyes fixed on her ex-husband.
You can sleep on the couch. I’ll get some blankets for you.
Anna, you can sleep in my room with me.
I’ll call the police station first thing in the morning.
And find out what’s going on.
But when they get to Helen’s room, neither Anna nor Helen can stop worrying.
Are you awake?
Yes.
I can’t sleep.
Me neither.
Helen, I’m so sorry to bring you back into a case like this.
With you still recovering from your injury.
It’s okay, Anna.
I’d ask the same of you if it were Chloe.
We’d both do anything for our kids.
We would. But right now, can we talk about something else?
Trevor is all I’ve been talking, thinking and crying about for the last 12 hours.
Okay, what do you want to talk about?
You. How’s your leg? It seems a lot better.
It is. The limp is almost gone.
The doctor says it’ll be back to normal in about three months.
That’s great!
Do you think you’ll go back to the force then?
I don’t know. The whole thing was so traumatic.
You were so brave!
I was just doing my job.
But I might switch to a career that’s less dangerous.
Like accounting, maybe.
Ha! If I know you, you’re going to want to jump back into the action.
We’ll see.
And what about your love life?
Have you met any men up here lately?
Are you kidding?
Not a one.
Wait a minute, that’s not true.
There’s the cashier at the coffee shop. He’s been flirting with me.
I think he’s about 20. He has a man bun.
Oh how cute!
Maybe you should go for it.
But I’m old enough to be his mother! I think I’ll pass.
And what about Matt?
Anna…
I wish you’d stop trying to get us back together.
Matt should never have married that woman.
And he’s matured a lot since the police academy.
Plus he looks much better too.
You can’t tell me you haven’t noticed.
Okay, yes! I’ve noticed. And so have a lot of other women, apparently.
I hear things from my former colleagues.
Hasn’t he been dating that gorgeous paralegal?
Oh her!
He just sees those women because…
Because?
Because he thinks he can’t have you.
That’s wishful thinking on your part.
We’ll see.
Can we try to get some sleep now, Anna?
We need to have plenty of energy tomorrow.
You’re right. Goodnight.
Goodnight.
They both fall asleep.
At 3 a.m., Helen wakes up again.
She slips out of bed without waking Anna.
She’s made a decision.
Matt, are you awake?
Yes—I can’t sleep.
Me neither. I can’t wait around anymore.
I’m going out to the lodge.
Do you want to come with me?
Matt pulls aside his blanket and jumps off the couch.
He went to sleep in his clothes.
I’m ready.
Not quite. You’d better bring your gun.
Matt and Helen move swiftly and quietly,
But once they’re in the car, they talk.
Matt, can I tell you something in confidence?
That you won’t repeat to Anna?
Of course. What is it?
It’s just…sometimes I wonder about Trevor’s innocence.
This whole situation looks really bad for him.
If he didn’t kill Frank Cassidy, why would he be hiding?
I have to admit, I agree with you there. It does look suspicious.
But then I think back to that sweet kid who grew up with Chloe.
The one who went to all her birthday parties…
And helped her with her homework.
And I just can’t believe that guy would do something so terrible.
I know.
I really want him to be innocent, and safe.
For his sake and Anna’s.
Me too.
Matt reaches over and massages Helen’s shoulders.
She leans into his touch.
Matt…
Oh! We’re here.
She and Matt get out of the car after they pull up to the lodge.
There isn’t a police car in sight.
Let’s go out back, where Frank Cassidy was killed.
Maybe there’s some kind of clue out there.
Good idea.
They walk around the lodge to the rocky shoreline of Lake Superior.
No one else is there.
There is a nearly full moon, and Helen can see Frank Cassidy’s blood,
Still glistening on the rocks.
The waves crash against the shore.
And then a shot rings out.
What was that?
No idea—but we’d better find out.
Helen and Matt run along the shore toward the sound.
They soon find another body, bleeding onto the rocks.
It’s a man—and he’s dead.
Helen, do you know who this is?
No. I was afraid it was Trevor…
But I’ve never seen this guy in my life.
Then Helen and Matt hear a yell coming from outside a nearby cabin.
They run toward the sound and stop short.
They see Trevor on the ground.
And pointing a gun at him is…
Deirdre Lane.
