Blood On The Shore - Episode 5
by Phyllis Korkki
Deirdre continues pointing her gun at Trevor.
Why did you have to get involved in this, you stupid boy?
Now I’m going to have to kill you, too.
Stop—Ms. Lane, you need to give yourself up.
There’s no way you can get away with this.
Oh, I will. I most definitely will.
I just wish it didn’t mean killing three people instead of one.
You don’t have to do this…
Sure I do. I’m going to make it look as if you killed that hit man.
Because you refused to pay him for killing Frank.
And then everyone will think you went on the run again.
But in actuality, you’ll be dead in the middle of the lake.
That doesn’t make any sense.
Why would I hire someone to kill Mr. Cassidy?
Because you had a gambling addiction, of course.
And you were stealing from the lodge’s safe to pay for it.
And then Frank found out.
No, that was YOU.
YOU have the gambling addiction. I saw you at the casino!
And I saw you taking money out of Mr. Cassidy’s safe!
And then you lost it at the blackjack table.
Shut up, stupid boy.
I just don’t understand how you could do that.
I mean, you hired a hit man to kill your own stepfather.
After all he’s done for you.
I do regret I had to do it. He wasn’t a bad stepfather.
And honestly, if there had been any way to avoid it, I would have.
But I had no choice.
Everyone has a choice.
Not me.
Because I need his insurance money now.
My law practice will go under without it.
I can’t let that happen.
As the two continue to argue,
Neither Trevor nor Deirdre sees Helen and Matt.
They flatten themselves against the side of the cabin,
Inching closer to hear every word.
Helen pulls out her phone, and covering the light, dials 911.
Listen, how about we strike a deal?
I’ll give you a few more minutes of life, if you tell me...
How?
How did you figure all this out?
Now Trevor catches sight of Helen and Matt edging closer to Deirdre.
Helen catches Trevor’s eye, and gives him a slight nod,
Silently begging Trevor to keep Deirdre talking.
Do you really want to know?
Yes! I thought I hid my tracks well.
Not as well as you thought.
First, I noticed—
With one fluid motion, Helen lunges at Deirdre,
Knocking the gun out of her hand.
Simultaneously, Matt grabs Deirdre and points his own gun at her.
Two hours later, Deirdre is in jail.
She has confessed to hiring a hit man to kill Frank Cassidy.
And then killing the hit man after she refused to pay him.
Helen and Matt have brought Trevor back to be reunited with his mother and Chloe.
After the tears, joy and excitement wane a bit,
Curiosity takes hold.
Trevor explains that he saw Deirdre stealing from the lodge
And then, after following her in his car,
Saw her lose all the money at a nearby casino.
Anna interrupts him.
Why didn’t you just go to the police with what you found out?
I was about to. But I felt I had to tell Frank first.
But he refused to believe that Deirdre had done anything wrong.
He got mad at me for accusing her of stealing.
After we argued, he walked out of the office and out the back door toward the lake.
I followed him.
I wanted to tell him that I had no choice but to go to the police.
But before I could get to him, this guy comes up and shoots him down!
Oh my God. You witnessed a murder?
Yeah! And then the hit man turned around and saw that I had watched him kill Frank!
I ran as fast as I could and dropped my phone.
I snuck into one of the cabins. It was empty.
And he ran after you?
Yeah, but thank God I’d been in that cabin before.
And I knew there was a trapdoor in the closet to a basement area.
I quick went down there before the hit man could find me.
And then I heard him talking to someone on the phone.
Oh my God! Did you hear what he said?
Yeah. He was like, “He’s dead, but some kid saw me do it.”
He told the person to come down to the cabin to help find “the kid.”
He meant me.
And then he was like, “Bring the money.”
But the police came. They were everywhere!
I know. I heard them come to the door!
But the guy was smart—he just answered it and pretended he was staying in the cabin.
The police asked if he’d seen the lead suspect in Franks’ murder.
And then they described ME!
I was too scared to come out.
Oh my God! I would have been too.
I stayed down there for hours.
The guy was pacing almost the whole time.
That must have been torture!
It was.
And then there was a knock at the door.
I heard a woman’s voice. I knew it was Deirdre.
Right away the guy says, “Give me the money.”
And she says, “I don’t have it–so I’m going to have to kill you.”
And then I hear a gun shot.
Oh my God!
And the door slams.
At that point, I had to see what was going on.
I climbed out of the basement.
The cabin was empty.
I saw the hit man on the shore.
He must have tried to chase her and collapsed.
I started running after Deirdre.
But she had a gun, Trevor!
I know, but something came over me.
I just couldn’t let her get away with that.
And that’s when she saw me.
She pointed a gun at me.
I thought for sure I was a goner, but then I saw Chloe’s parents.
My baby! You were so brave.
Anna goes over to Trevor and showers him with hugs and kisses.
Trevor blushes and squirms, but puts up with it.
Um, Trevor.
Trevor looks up from his mother’s affectionate mauling.
Can we go to my room?
I need to tell you something.
