Cheating Before the Wedding - Episode 2
by Kat Dexter
The next morning, Avery is back home.
She left Xavier’s place in a Lyft at midnight, overcome by guilt.
Avery opens up her text messages and begins typing.
That can never happen again!
Why not?
I’ve never had such an intense connection with someone before…
I thought you felt the same way.
I do…
I mean, I did.
But we have to forget that it ever happened.
I told Hunter that I’d give him another chance.
We’re terrible people.
But it was so good…
Holding you in my arms just felt right.
Kissing you, touching you…
It felt like a puzzle piece that had been missing from my life was finally put in place.
Hang on, I think he’s back.
Never mind, false alarm.
I know…
It was wonderful, but it can’t happen again.
I can’t believe you’re still going to marry him.
I told you…it’s complicated.
🙄
And even though it doesn’t make sense, I still love him.
I’ll never forget what happened last night.
Me neither.
But we need to go back to being just friends.
Okay?
If that’s what you really want, okay.
But I think you’re making a mistake.
And if you change your mind, I’ll be here.
On Friday night Avery gets a text from Xavier.
What are you doing tonight?
I was supposed to go to the movies with Hunter.
But he bailed.
What happened?
Noah called in sick and the company is launching a new kind of stupid tequila tonight.
Hunter told Noah that he’d cover his ass.
🙄
Oh, that sucks.
It’s the last weekend the movie is playing, too.
And it’s Chris Pratt.
Your celebrity crush, I know.
Because of how he looks with his shirt off.
You know it. I guess I’ll just have to buy it on iTunes.
I could take you.
If you want?
I don’t want to force you to go to some chick flick.
Hey, I happen to like chick flicks.
Oh really?
Name the last one your saw.
Um, The Notebook.
We watched that sophomore year in my dorm room.
So, it’s been awhile.
I liked it though.
Didn’t you cry at the end?
Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t.
Come on, quit changing the subject. Let me take you.
I don’t think so, considering…
Avery walks down the hall with a load of laundry in her hands.
She curses as she drops a pair of Hunter’s jeans.
As she bends down to pick them up, a condom falls out of the back pocket.
She’s been on birth control for the past five years and hasn’t used a condom with Hunter since then.
She texts Xavier.
Pick me up at seven?
Glad you changed your mind. See you then!
The next morning, Avery sees a text from Xavier.
A smile crosses her face.
The fact is, they hardly saw any of the movie at all.
They were too busy making out in the balcony that they had all to themselves.
I should invite you to the movies more often.
I think we put on a better show.
We’re lucky no one else was sitting in the balcony.
True, but you made me miss a half-naked Chris Pratt!
You got to see a half-naked me instead!
Not to give you a big ego or anything, but I think I like your six-pack better.
Come over.
Be there in an hour.
An hour later, Avery gets a text.
When are you coming over?
I don’t know if I can anymore.
Come on…
Don’t make me beg.
Avery looks down at her engagement ring.
Avery?
You still there?
Did I say something wrong?
Xav…I’m getting married in less than two weeks.
This just isn’t right.
Can I remind you of something, Avery?
You’re getting married to an asshole who cheats on you.
Is that really what you want in life?
How am I any better?
I cheated on him too!
It’s different and you know it!
Oh really?
How?
I didn’t sleep with some random girl I picked up in a bar.
You’re my best friend and I care about you.
I care about you too, but this has to stop.
Why are you marrying him, Avery?
Seriously.
Why?
We’ve been over this like a hundred times.
Money, parental pressure, blah, blah, blah!
You’re making excuses and you know it.
Take that back!
No!
I would do anything for you.
I think you feel the same way about me.
I can’t do this.
Can’t do what?
Admit that you have feelings for me?
Stop.
No!
I want to put everything on the table.
Are you going to be happy with that jerk lying next to you every night?
When it should be me there in the bed?
You need to stop!
You’re my best friend.
I need you in my life.
Just…not in the way we’ve been lately.
You know what, Avery?
I’m going to tell you something.
I’ve wanted to do it in person, but this will have to do.
Xavier, don’t.
Please, don’t.
I love you.
I think about you all of the time.
I want to be with you every waking minute of the day.
Hunter doesn’t deserve you and you know it.
Avery turns around as the front door opens.
He’s home.
The next morning, Avery texts Xavier.
I told him everything.
You did what?
I can’t see you anymore.
My future with Hunter is too important to me.
He admitted that he’s made terrible mistakes, but I’m his world.
Everything he does, he does for me.
He’s going to quit his job after the wedding and find something less intense.
That way, we can spend more time together.
The bottom line is that he loves me more than anything and I love him.
Well, Avery, I guess you have it all figured out.
I’m sorry.
Me too.
I’m going to miss you.
I’m going to miss us.
Please, don’t make it any harder than it has to be.
You’ve made your decision and I have to respect that.
Goodbye.
Just remember: I love you.
