Daisy's Practice Date - Episode 1
by Kathleen Kreiser
I FaceTime my best friend, Matthew…
And he answers on the first ring.
Matthew! I really need your help — whoa.
Matthew has just gotten out of the shower…
And he’s naked from the waist up.
Sorry, looks like this is a bad time.
I’ll call back later.
Don’t. It’s cool.
No it’s not.
I can’t talk to you when you’re basically naked.
Go find some clothes.
I have a towel on.
A towel isn’t clothes.
I stare at Matthew for longer than I should.
I mean…his whole torso is on display.
Daisy?
Is this distracting you?
No, of course not.
So, the reason I’m calling is…
I need your help.
Just…go put a shirt on.
You’re so easy to rile up.
Matthew smirks, but he puts down the phone.
When he returns, he’s got a shirt on.
So, what’s going on?
How can I help you?
Well, I have a little…FaceTime date later.
A FaceTime date? With who?
This guy Brandon from the coffee shop.
Oh.
I’ve been crazy about this guy for weeks, Matthew!
I finally get brave enough to give him my number…
And all I get is ‘oh?’
I mean…that’s…great.
But what do you need me for?
Well, I just realized…
I don’t know how to talk to guys.
That’s not true. You talk to me all the time.
Yeah, but…that doesn’t count.
Matthew looks a little hurt.
You know what I mean.
I guess.
I don’t know what you’re so worried about, though.
Just be yourself.
No way. Myself is…boring.
I’ll say “hi” and “how are you…”
And then be totally silent.
Which brings me to my big ask:
Can I practice on you?
You mean practice your flirting skills with me?
Yes.
Um…sure.
Great! Now…pretend you’re Brandon.
Matthew scowls, but then dramatically gets into character.
He drops his voice an octave, a total caricature.
Hey, I’m Brandon. I work at a coffee shop.
He does not sound like that.
Sorry, I don’t know what your dream guy’s voice is like.
Just talk normally.
So he sounds like me then?
I roll my eyes at him.
Fine.
Hi Daisy, it’s Brandon.
Hi Brandon.
Then we’re quiet.
See, this is what I was talking about.
I’m already out of things to say.
You’re overthinking it.
When you’re talking to someone you like…
It doesn’t matter what you talk about.
It’s about making a connection.
Feeling closer to them.
Hm…
Like…remember that time I drove you to your dad’s house…
And we got stuck in traffic for, like, three hours?
Oh, God! I do remember that.
It should have been awful, but…
It was actually a pretty fun trip.
And I bet you can’t remember what we talked about.
I think about it.
I don’t.
See?
You just need to turn your brain off and say whatever.
Okay. Let’s try again.
Good. This time, ask me a question.
I nod.
Matthew clears his throat.
Hey Daisy, it’s Brandon.
Hi Brandon. How was rehearsal?
It was awesome.
Remind me what kind of rehearsal I was at.
Brandon’s in a band.
He’s the singer for the Lonely Wallflowers.
Wait…you’re talking to that guy?
From that crappy emo band?
You know them?
Yeah. They played a party I was at last week.
And that singer is such a sleaze.
He literally hit on everything in a skirt.
I can’t let you go out with him.
Matthew, I’m an adult.
You can’t tell me who I can and can’t go out with.
But…
He’s hot, he was nice to me, and I want to talk to him.
So you’re going to help me, or we can hang up.
Matthew relents.
Fine. Let’s go again.
This time, Matthew adopts a total jerk persona.
Hi Daisy, it’s Brandon.
I sing whiny emo songs with my lame band.
Let’s date till I get bored with you.
Hope you like herpes.
Stop it, Matthew!
Why are you being like this?
You’re supposed to be my friend.
I am your friend.
That’s why I don’t want you going out with Brandon.
He’ll break your heart.
Really? That’s why?
Matthew looks hurt.
You know what, Daisy?
Do whatever you want.
He hangs up on me.
I feel like crap.
I try to call him back, but my phone rings.
It’s Brandon.
I answer immediately.
Hi, Brandon.
Hey, Daisy.
How, um…how are you?
Fine.
And then, we’re quiet.
How was band practice?
It was good.
More quiet.
Wow, we’re not very good at this, are we?
I guess not.
You’re usually so chatty at the coffee place.
I thought you would have more to say.
Me?
He just shrugs.
Suddenly, I have no idea what I saw in him.
Brandon, I have to go…
I just have to go.
Okay, whatever.
I end the call…
And then I call Matthew.
He answers on the first ring.
I’m so sorry, Matthew.
I’m the one who’s sorry.
I said those things because…
I was jealous.
Wait…what?
I still don’t like Brandon…
But the reason has less to do with him.
And more to do with me.
What are you saying?
I’m saying I love being your friend, Daisy.
But I want to be more.
I hate the idea of you going on FaceTime dates with Brandon…
Or with anyone else.
You should have them with me.
That makes me smile.
I think we already went on a FaceTime date.
Earlier. Remember?
That was a practice date.
Doesn’t count.
That’s not what I would do on a real FaceTime date.
I raise an eyebrow.
Oh?
What would you do?
Tell you what…
I’ll call you tomorrow at seven…
And you can find out for yourself.
What do you say, Daisy?
I say…
It’s a date.
