Dead Air - Episode 10
by Travis Pennington
Chrissy soon realizes that it’s impossible to navigate the expressway due to all the stalled cars and dead bodies.
So she makes her way to Paris Métro Line 3.
There she picks up the emergency phone.
Is anyone there?
Anyone??
Please…
Please answer if you can hear me…
Quelle est l’urgence?
Thank God!
Quelle est l’urgence?
Do you speak English?
Oui.
What is your emergency?
I’m on Paris Métro Line 3.
It was moving a minute ago.
But it just stopped.
What’s the emergency, miss?
The train just stopped.
It was about to arrive at Gare du Nord, and it just stopped.
Everyone’s dead.
Hundreds…
No, THOUSANDS of bodies on the platform.
Oh God…
What’s happening, miss?
There’s a boy and a girl.
Teenagers.
They’re in another train.
One track over.
They’re trying to open the door.
The boy, he…
What happened, miss?
He…
He just coughed up blood.
It’s running down the girl’s hair.
She’s just standing there.
Mouth open.
Eye’s bulging.
And now…
Now what?
Miss?
They’re gone.
They collapsed inside the car.
Dead.
I understand.
I understand, miss.
But this line is reserved for emergencies only.
Please state your emergency or hang up now.
EVERYONE’S DEAD!
And I’m stuck in a train with my daughter.
Of course everyone’s dead, Chrissy.
It’s the most common side effect of the X1-B virus.
Once it’s in the air, everyone dies.
Dead air.
But you should be all right, Chrissy.
Original carriers are immune.
Is there anything else I can help you with today?
How do you…
How do you know who I am?
And how…
Oh God…
It’s one of the benefits to being REALLY smart, sis.
The ability to stay one step ahead. Or twenty.
This is especially true with you.
I’ve had the past six years to learn your behaviors.
I know what you’re going to do even before you do.
And now you’ve told me exactly where you are.
15 minutes later
From the other side of the train door, John motions Chrissy to pick up the emergency phone, which he’s diverted to his smartphone.
Hi, sis.
I didn’t mean for you to see all this.
All WHAT?
The people you killed?
The people WE killed, yes.
This is the ugly part.
Out here in the open, it will take about twenty years for the bodies to skeletonize.
But wild animals will help speed up the process.
There’ll be thousands of wild animals scavenging through cities in the years to come.
So my guess is places like Paris should be clear of human remains within a decade or so.
A DECADE or so??
This can’t…
This can’t be happening.
I know…I know.
It’s going to take a while to adjust to this new world.
But you WILL adjust, sis.
You’re the strongest woman I’ve ever known.
And after the initial shock of what’s happened starts to wear off…
We can go anywhere you want.
But there are going to be rules.
I control everything now.
And I’m happy to rule this new world alone.
But I’d be much happier if you join me.
And WHO, exactly, do you plan on ruling?
Look around.
Unless you plan on ordering those wild animals to sit at your feet, you’re ruling options appear to be limited to ZERO.
John glances at Sylvie, who’s sleeping against Chrissy’s shoulder.
Not zero.
Don’t even look at her.
If you get within ten feet of my daughter, I’ll kill you.
I’m going to take her, sis.
It’s for her own good.
There’s nothing you can do to stop that.
But things just wouldn’t be right if you didn’t join us as well.
There’s something I’ve never told you…
My own little secret.
Something I’ve kept to myself because the time wasn’t right yet.
What?
Do you think you’re the second coming of Christ now?
Nothing would surprise me at this point.
Of course not.
I just…this is hard to say, but…
I love you, Chrissy.
I always have.
And not as a brother.
You’ll see how much in time.
And I promise to be good to you.
Now use the emergency latch to unlock the doors.
I don’t care how you feel.
If you think I could ever love you back after…
After all of this.
Just look around.
There are no words for what you’ve done. But…
But what, sis?
But what?
But there’s something you should know about ME.
You’re not the only one with a secret.
And if you can accept it, and you promise to never lay a finger on my daughter, I’ll unlock the doors and come with you.
And I’ll give you anything you want.
I told you I love you.
And there’s nothing about you I couldn’t accept.
And I never…
I NEVER would do anything to your daughter.
You should know me better than that.
Really, John? Really.
I should know you??
Yes.
At least as far as family is concerned.
So tell me your secret.
Tell me and then we can go wherever you want and start the world over.
Here’s the thing, John…
The world ended when you made me release that virus.
We’re not going to be some modern-day Adam and Eve.
Once you, me, and Sylvie are dead, that will be it as far as humanity goes.
What are you talking about?
After I had Sylvie, the doctor examined me.
He told me I would never be able to have more children.
So, everything you did was for nothing.
John stares at Chrissy for a few seconds, before shifting his gaze to Sylvie.
He finally looks to his left, snaps his fingers, and the little boy Chrissy had seen with him earlier approaches.
How many times have I told you, Sis?
I know everything about you.
Including the fact that you can’t have more children.
I never thought for one moment that you and I would be the ones to repopulate the world.
But I’m flattered that it crossed your mind.
Who is this boy?
And how is he still alive?
You and I have so much in common, sis.
It would be downright scary if it wasn’t all part of God’s plan.
We both have a virus that killed everyone in our home towns.
We both were adopted by the same man and ended up getting closer than real siblings ever would.
We both became parents when we were only children ourselves.
And most importantly, our children are both immune to the virus.
John looks at the boy and smiles, just as the train doors start to open.
This is my son, Noah, and today is his fifth birthday.
He likes fishing, video games, and basketball.
Noah, why don’t you go introduce yourself to your new friend Sylvie?
You’re going to be spending a lot of time together.
