Dead Air - Episode 9
by Travis Pennington
Sis?
There’s no point in running.
I know where you are.
You’re in Angelique’s car with Sylvie.
Sitting on the shoulder of l’Autoroute du Nord.
With smashed cars and dead bodies stretching out as far as you can see.
No matter where you go, I’ll find you.
We’ve been watching you for years.
Often in the dark, with our faces hidden.
We know what you’re thinking.
And we know exactly where you are.
We?
Father and me. Along with a few loyal followers.
We understood what needed to be done and were willing to sacrifice their lives to make it happen.
Henry’s dead.
And he certainly isn’t our father.
He used us.
Manipulated us.
What’s happening now is all because of him.
Yes, it is.
But it’s a beautiful thing.
I know it doesn’t seem that way right now.
But you’ll see the beauty of it in time.
Why me?
If you also have the virus, why didn’t YOU release it?
You know why.
I…
It’s because you’re completely unemotional, isn’t it.
Yes.
When have you ever seen me angry or scared?
Even with what’s happening now, all I see is beauty.
Please, John.
Please…don’t let this happen.
We can still stop it.
It’s too late for that.
Paris is gone now.
And the rest of the world will be dead within a week.
We couldn’t stop it now if we wanted.
Oh God.
You’re sick.
Worse than Hitler.
Worse than the craziest psychopaths to ever live.
You just killed billions of people.
And that’s “beauty” in your eyes?
Everyone dies eventually.
Just look at what the world has become over the past hundred years.
We’ve made the greatest leaps in science and technology in all of human history.
We have enough resources to feed and educate fifty billion people.
And look what we’ve done with this power and knowledge God’s given us.
Did you know that 80 percent of the world lives in extreme poverty?
Waking up every day with no hope of a future.
And the worst part?
Those 80 percent are bearing 99 percent of the children.
Things couldn’t continue like that.
It’s not your place to decide that, John.
Then whose place is it?
The United Nations?
They clearly haven’t done a very good job.
Better them than you.
Why?
Because I’m just a poor orphan from Bulgaria?
There’s a reason you and I met each other, Sis.
There’s a reason Henry found us both and brought us together.
And there’s a reason he sacrificed his life to make things better.
I know you can’t see that now, but you will.
It might take months, or maybe even years…
But eventually, you’ll see God’s plan.
All I see now is people dying.
WHOLE FAMILIES!
A little boy in the middle of the road, lifeless with his father’s limp arms around him.
Don’t tell me that needed to happen.
And don’t tell me all of this is God’s plan.
If what I’m looking at now is God’s plan, then I don’t want anything to do with him.
And I certainly don’t want anything to do with you.
I knew you’d feel this way.
How insightful.
Just leave us alone.
In fact, you better PRAY you never see me again.
Because I WILL kill you, John.
And I won’t feel an ounce of guilt in doing so.
It’s okay, sis.
I know this is hard.
But you’ll come around.
In fact…
In fact, WHAT??
Turn the car around.
Come back to the airport.
Sylvie’s such a strong little girl.
Didn’t even cry when you dragged Angelique’s bloody body away and started the engine.
I was watching, you know?
And what I was going to say a moment ago was…
If you come back to the airport, or meet me somewhere, I’ll let you kill me if you still want to after hearing what I have to say.
Just give me a moment to speak to you face to face first…
Deal?
Deal??
Chrissy starts to reply, but her phone goes dead.
