E-Stripper - Episode 1
by Kayla Parent
UM, WHAT THE H***?!
Hey there beautiful!
Like what you see?
I spring out of bed…
Staring in shock at my phone.
Because there’s a dude taking off his shirt on my screen.
WHAT IS THIS?!
WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!
I’m your birthday surprise, Anna.
He runs a hand down his stomach…
And swivels his hips in a wide circle.
My birthday surprise?!
What are you talking about?!
He turns around…
And I get a full view of his pert, jean-clad a**.
Your friend Marina hired me.
Hired you?!
For what?!
To dance for you.
She said you could use a little cheering up.
My whole body goes rigid.
Oh my god.
I am going to KILL her.
The man turns around…
And flashes me a devastating smile.
Or you could just sit back and enjoy the show.
She paid me for the hour.
He goes to the button on his pants…
And my eyes go wide.
STOP!
He toys with the zipper…
Still smiling.
Want me to go slower—
No! Please — keep your clothes on!
He stands up straight…
Then peers at the screen.
Wait, are you serious?
YES!
I’m truly sorry that my friend wasted your time…
But I’m not interested.
After a moment, he sits down on the chair behind him.
Okay, well this is a first.
I let out a sigh of relief…
But I’m still in shock.
Who even are you?
My name is Dave.
I’m an E-stripper.
What the heck is that?!
Instead of stripping at a club or venue…
I do FaceTime dances.
I look at him like he’s crazy.
An E-stripper?
He frowns, and fidgets a bit.
Hey — don’t judge.
Just trying to pay my way through med school.
I let out a breath.
I’m not judging.
I’m just surprised, that’s all.
He nods, then runs a hand through his hair.
I pace my room, a few things clicking into place.
I should have known she was up to something.
She sent me a text making sure I picked up this call.
God, I can’t believe she’d do something like this.
I’m sure her intentions were good.
Happy birthday, by the way.
He smiles handsomely again…
And I can’t help but give him a small one in return.
Thanks.
And you’re right.
This is just her misguided attempt to make me feel better.
He clears his throat.
Is…everything okay?
I wave off his words.
It’s nice of you to ask…
But she didn’t hire you to listen to my boy drama.
I’ll let you go—
I’m paid for the hour — and it’s non-refundable.
Don’t want to waste your friend’s money.
Talk to me.
I bite my lip, contemplating.
Can I really tell a stranger — an E-stripper?! — about my problems?
Come on, what’s his name?
I sigh, then sink down on my mattress.
Oh, what the h***.
His name’s Andrew.
And he broke up with me yesterday.
Dave scoffs loudly.
Right before your birthday?
What an a**hole.
I feel tears form in my eyes.
There’s this new girl at his job.
He told me he wants to ask her out.
I was completely blindsided.
We’ve been dating for a year…
And I thought things were going great.
Dave rears back, his face contorting with disgust.
Wow — so he’s a level ten.
I sniffle, then blink away the tears.
A level ten?
Yeah, a level ten a**hole.
A title reserved for the worst of the worst.
I manage to chuckle a little.
We lock eyes, and he leans forward.
I mean it, Anna.
People who really love you shouldn’t hurt you.
And any guy who would let a beautiful and fun girl like you get away…
Well, there must be something wrong with him.
My heart skips a beat…
And I reach up and run a hand through my unwashed hair.
That’s sweet but…
You don’t even know me.
How do you know I’m fun?
He crosses his arms…
Showing off his bulging muscles.
I try not to stare.
Well, you’re wearing a concert t-shirt—
One of my favorite bands to see live, in fact.
So I know you listen to awesome music…
And like to have a good time.
I smile wide.
And behind you I see a bunch of framed photos.
He leans closer to the phone.
Looks like a mountain view, a sunset over an ocean…
So like me, you either like to travel…
Or appreciate good art.
I smile wider.
Both.
He nods, smiling so hard his dimples are showing.
Lastly, there’s a pizza box on your bed.
Any girl who eats pizza in bed is a serious catch.
I laugh loudly…
Feeling lighter than I have all day.
Okay, okay.
I get your point.
I look at him more closely.
He is seriously hot.
And he’s studying to be a doctor?
I suddenly want to know more about him.
So how does one get into…E-stripping?
He shrugs, then laughs.
Honestly, I love to dance.
And I don’t think I’m brave enough to do live stripping…
So this seemed like a good alternative.
Plus, it pays well.
Harvard Medical School doesn’t come cheap.
My jaw drops open.
I go to Harvard, too!
His eyes go wide.
No way! Seriously?
Yeah! Just started in the fall.
Dave leans back, shaking his head.
I don’t believe you.
My face scrunches with confusion.
Um, it’s the truth.
I wouldn’t lie—
I don’t believe you because…
There’s no way I wouldn’t have noticed a gorgeous girl like you on campus.
My heart skips a beat…
And I laugh through yet another smile.
You’re a charmer, Dave, you know that?
I have my moments.
So, what are you studying?
Medical law, believe it or not.
He shakes his head.
Imagine that.
Another thing we have in common.
He settles into his chair.
You know what?
I like you, Anna.
I lean back on my pillows.
I like you too, Dave.
You have officially cheered me up.
That’s what I’m here for.
So…by any chance are you going to the fundraiser on campus tonight—
My phone beeps.
When I see who’s calling…
I gasp.
Oh my god, he’s calling me.
Who?
Andrew!
What should I do?
Dave’s face falls.
What do you want to do?
I want to pick up.
I want him to tell me he’s sorry…
That he made a terrible mistake.
I look down shamefully.
But it’s the truth.
Dave scans my face…
Then nods.
You know my opinion on the matter.
But I’m probably not the best person to give advice.
I’ve been single for years.
I smile at the phone.
Thanks for talking to me today, Dave.
It was a lot of fun.
He grabs a shirt from the floor and puts it on.
Anytime, Anna.
Good luck.
Bye.
I reach up and click over to the other line.
Andrew’s familiar face fills the screen.
He looks miserable.
Thanks for picking up.
I didn’t think you would.
What do you want, Andrew?
To say sorry.
And to tell you that I made a huge mistake.
He gazes at me, and I see the regret in his eyes.
Let me guess, you asked her out…
She turned you down…
And now you think you can crawl back?
I didn’t even ask her.
I don’t know what came over me…
But it’s not her I want.
It’s you.
He’s telling me exactly what I want to hear.
A part of me relishes in that comfort.
You really hurt me.
I thought we were happy.
We were!
We are!
I just had a moment of insanity.
I love you, Anna.
You know I do.
I can feel myself giving in.
Wanting to go back to what I know.
But something Dave said pops into my head.
I take a deep breath…
Then shake my head.
No.
Someone once told me that the people who love you shouldn’t hurt you.
This is over, Andrew.
Andrew shakes his head.
Who told you that?
An E-stripper named Dave.
I reach out and hang up the call.
I can’t believe I just did that!
And I can’t believe I’m going to do this.
I go to my recent calls…
And press on Dave’s number.
He answers on the first ring.
Anna?
He wanted me back.
He apologized…
And apparently, he never even asked the girl out.
Dave blinks a few times.
Okay.
Well that’s good I guess—
— But you were right.
People who love you shouldn’t hurt you.
So I ended it. Officially.
If he can write me off that easily…
He can’t possibly love me.
Not the way I want to be loved.
Dave starts smiling.
D*** right.
I’m proud of you, Anna.
I think that was the right choice.
I give him my best smile…
Then lean toward the phone.
Now what were you saying about the fundraiser tonight?
