Three floors down and on the other side of the house, the phone rings.
Bernadette
Pynchon residence.
Megan
My sister! You need to find her!
Bernadette
I’m afraid I don’t understand.
Megan
Hannah Bright. She’s my sister.
Bernadette
I see. Do you need to talk to Ms. Bright?
Megan
No. I just called 911 because she’s in danger!
Megan
She just told me that she’s Virginia Pynchon’s granddaughter.
Bernadette
I beg your pardon?
Megan
She’s adopted. She never knew who gave her up.
Suddenly Bernadette realizes what Megan is saying.
Hannah is Allison’s baby.
Bernadette had noticed the resemblance earlier.
But had denied that it was there,
Because she thought Hannah was out to destroy the family,
Based on what Lucinda had told her.
Megan
Please. Things have been happening to Hannah while she’s been there.
Megan
I think someone wants to kill her.
Megan
She thinks it’s Virginia Pynchon’s husband.
Megan
But I’m not so sure.
Megan
Please. Just trust me on this.
Bernadette also calls 911, and then runs to Hannah’s room.
The door is open and the room is empty.
She rushes to Ms. Pynchon’s room and throws open the door.
Ms. Pynchon
Bernadette! You should have knocked first!
Bernadette
But Ms. Pynchon, Hannah might be in danger!
Bernadette
We NEED to find her.
Bernadette
I called the police, but they might be too late.
Ms. Pynchon
Is she in her room?
Ms. Pynchon
I told her to lock her bedroom door.
Bernadette
The door is open. She’s not in there!
Ms. Pynchon
My word! How did Lionel get her to open it?
Ms. Pynchon
I told her to look out for him.
Ms. Pynchon
And I even asked Lucinda to check on her.
Suddenly, Lionel comes in through the front door, holding his keys.
Lionel
Did I hear my name?
Ms. Pynchon
Lionel, what have you done with Hannah?
Lionel
Done with her? I just got in!
Lionel
I’ve been at the golf club for hours.
Ms. Pynchon knows what Lionel looks like when he’s lying.
She knows he couldn’t pull of such nonchalance if he had abducted Hannah.
Ms. Pynchon
How could I have been so stupid.
Ms. Pynchon
It’s Lucinda.
Bernadette
Oh no, it all makes sense now. Lucinda.
Bernadette
She told me things about Hannah…
Bernadette
And all this time…
Ms. Pynchon
I’ve always suspected Lucinda was ruthless, but I never thought she’d go this far.
Ms. Pynchon
Bernadette, get Tyler!
Ms. Pynchon
We need to search every corner of this house—
Ms. Pynchon
We’re going to need all the help we can get!
Tyler
What’s going on? I heard voices.
Ms. Pynchon
We think Hannah is in danger.
Ms. Pynchon
And that Lucinda is behind it.
Ms. Pynchon
There’s no time to explain.
Ms. Pynchon
Tyler, search every room in the Red Wing for them.
Bernadette
Ms. Pynchon, I think I know where they are.
Bernadette
It’s a spot where Lucinda used to hide when she was girl.
Virginia and Tyler follow Bernadette to the disused portion of the mansion,
While Lionel scurries into his bedroom and locks the door.
As they get closer to the attic, they see Lucinda approaching the ladder with a gun in her hand.
Tyler sprints ahead and knocks Lucinda to the ground.
The gun flies out of her hand and Bernadette grabs it.
Ms. Pynchon
I hear sirens!
Ms. Pynchon
I’ll go get the police.
Ms. Pynchon
They’ll never find us all the way up here.
Lucinda is squirming and screaming and spitting.
But Tyler and Bernadette manage to hold her down.
Hannah
Help! I’m in the attic!
Tyler
We’re coming for you, Hannah. As soon as the police get here.
The police arrive, put Lucinda in handcuffs and lead her away.
Tyler unlocks the trapdoor and Hannah falls sobbing into his arms.
Tyler
Thank god you’re OK.
Tyler and Hannah are together in her room.
She is showing him the diary.
Hannah
So that’s how I know I’m actually Virginia Pynchon’s granddaughter.
Hannah
I can still hardly believe it.
Tyler
That’s an amazing story.
Hannah
I guess Lucinda saw me as a threat to her job and lifestyle
Hannah
Especially since Ms. Pynchon desperately wanted to make amends for her sad past with Allison
Hannah
And that’s why Lucinda wanted to kill me.
Tyler
I had no idea Lucinda was that evil.
Hannah
The two of you had quite a flirtation going!
Tyler
Well, she IS attractive.
Tyler
And once she told me about your fiancé…
Tyler
Yes! She said you were getting married next month.
Hannah
I don’t have a fiancé.
Tyler
You don’t? So she lied about that, too.
Hannah
Yes. I am completely, utterly single.
Tyler
I’m very glad to hear that.
Tyler
I have to admit, I never thought I would be so happy to have a car accident.
Tyler
And when I saw you in the hallway and knew I would see you again…
Tyler
And when I held your hand…
Hannah
Like I had finally come home.
There is a short silence and then…
Tyler draws Hannah into a very long, very passionate kiss.
