Family Secrets - Episode 9
by Phyllis Korkki
Hannah sees her own name written in Allison’s diary.
And the realization washes over her.
SHE is Allison’s daughter.
Which means…
That Virginia Pynchon is her grandmother.
Megan, are you there?
I just found out something.
Did you leave yet?
Please tell me you left!
No, I’m still here.
Why are you being so stupid?
Megan, wait.
I just found out that I’m Virginia Pynchon’s GRANDDAUGHTER.
And Virginia Pynchon’s HUSBAND has been trying to kill me.
WHAT???!
Just then Hannah hears a knock at her door.
Oh no! Someone’s at the door.
What should I do, Megan?
What if it’s Lionel?
Hannah, don’t open the door!
Stay close to your phone, Megan!
I want to be able to text you if I need you.
Hannah calls out through the door.
Who is it?
Hannah, it’s Lucinda.
Grandma told me about Lionel.
He deliberately threw that statue at you from the roof!
She just confronted him and he ran out the front door.
And Grandma called the police.
Hopefully they’ll catch him soon.
You’re safe now. You can open the door.
Hannah opens the door.
Oh thank god!
Lucinda gives Hannah a hug and they sit down together on the bed.
I’ve been waiting for Grandma to come to her senses about Lionel.
I’m so sorry you had to be exposed to him like this.
But at least it will cause Grandma to finally leave him.
Just then Lucinda sees the diary on the bed.
I see you’ve been reading Allison’s diary.
I’ve read it too.
Have you seen the part…
Yes!
So we’re cousins! I’m so glad.
Isn’t this exciting?
You can be like the sister I never had.
This is all so much to take in at once.
We should go see Ms. Pynchon.
I mean, I guess I should try to start thinking of her as my grandma now…
Oh, don’t worry. That will come in time.
And yes, we need to see how she’s doing.
But before we go see her…
I want to show you something.
What?
It’s something your mother owned. She loved it.
I’m sure Grandma would want you to have it.
What is it?
It’s in the attic, on the top floor.
I think I should see Ms. Pynchon first.
She’s probably really upset and waiting to hear from the police.
No, she’s fine. Bernadette is with her.
I found some scrapbooks with family photos up in the attic too.
We can bring them down and look at them together.
It will help distract her while she’s waiting.
Come on!
Lucinda whisks Hannah out of the room.
And Hannah leaves her phone behind.
It keeps lighting up.
Hannah?
Are you there?
You said you would be right back!
I’m thinking about what you just told me…
I’m afraid for your safety!!!
Please! Answer me!
Meanwhile, Lucinda takes Hannah down yet another long hallway…
And up two flights of stairs.
This is the oldest part of the house.
It’s barely used.
We’ll have to climb up this ladder.
I don’t know. It seems awfully rickety.
No, it’s fine. I’ll be right behind you.
Go ahead—through that trapdoor.
Hannah steps from the ladder into the darkened attic room.
Suddenly the trapdoor closes underneath her.
She is alone!
Then she hears a metal clanking noise.
Lucinda, where are you?
Hannah tries to open the trapdoor but it won’t budge.
Then she starts banging.
Lucinda! Where are you?
What are you doing?
Why???!
There is a long silence.
Then Hannah hears something through the trapdoor…
Did you really think you could get away with this?
Waltz in here and take away everything I worked so hard to get?
What do you mean?
I didn’t know I was Ms. Pynchon’s granddaughter until tonight!
What would I get away with?
I know she’ll make YOU the head of her foundation.
That’s the job she wanted Allison to have.
So of course she’ll give it to Allison’s long-lost daughter.
No matter how qualified I am.
Lucinda, aren’t you jumping to conclusions?
I don’t know anything about how to run a foundation.
And I’m happy being a journalist.
You say that now…
But you’d be surprised what money and power can do.
I won’t let you take my job.
And Grandma’s fortune.
And even…my man.
What?
Don’t act all innocent.
I’ve seen the way you and Tyler look at each other.
But he’s mine.
Together, we are going to form the perfect merger.
Lucinda, I was going to leave tonight.
Let me out of here. Seriously—I’ll leave and never come back.
You know it’s too late, Hannah.
I have no choice but to kill you.
I have a nice sharp knife and a gun with a silencer.
Which do you prefer?
Lucinda, think for a minute.
You can’t possibly get away with this.
They’ll know you did it.
That’s where your wrong.
It will take them a while to find the body.
Then I’m going to pin it on Lionel.
Grandma thinks he tried to kill you with that statue.
And that he put those dead birds in your bed.
That was you, wasn’t it?
You put the rug out in the middle of the hall, too, didn’t you?
Yes, to give you a hint of discomfort.
And how did you like that moaning noise?
That was just for fun.
You’re insane.
Poor Bernadette thinks you’re Satan incarnate.
I told her you came here to bring down the whole family.
And the company, too.
She’s terrified that the family is going to lose everything because of you!
Hannah is silent.
You never answered my question.
Do you prefer the knife or the gun?
You see, I’m not a total monster…
I’m giving you a choice.
Hannah doesn’t answer.
Since you won’t answer, I guess I’ll have to choose for you.
And I choose…the gun.
Less mess.
I’ll be right back.
Back in Hannah’s room, her phone keeps lighting up.
Hannah? Where are you.
Please please please answer.
Hannah, PLEASE!
