Fatal Consequences - Episode 5
by Judy Cole
One day later, Jo-Jo arrives at Walter and Izabel Leighton’s mansion.
She straightens her conservative suit and rings the doorbell, bracing for her conversation with the Senator.
But he isn’t the one who answers…
Hello!
I’m sorry…I was expecting Senator Leighton.
I thought so. Walter must have double-booked again.
I’ll call to reschedule.
Oh, no. Come inside! He won’t be long. You’re Carole, aren’t you?
No, I’m her colleague…Joan.
So many people working PR for Walter’s new campaign!
Carole might not have mentioned me.
Even so, I’m terrible with names. Walter is always getting mad at me.
When will the senator be back?
I’m not sure. I wasn’t supposed to be here today.
Oh?
I just flew in from Milan. The collections were very disappointing, so I decided to end my trip early.
What a shame.
Izabel shrugs a tanned shoulder.
It’s okay. I’m going to New York in an hour.
What is it the British say? Keep calm and carry on shopping!
I won’t keep you.
No, please come in. Jane was it?
Joan.
Joan, right, sorry.
Perhaps Senator Leighton got stuck in a committee meeting.
I can check with Walter’s assistant. Please come in.
Jo decides to play along. Even if the senator returns, she doubts he’ll blow her cover.
That would be kind of you.
Can I get you something cold to drink?
I don’t want to put you to any trouble.
It’s no trouble at all. We have loads of fresh juice.
I wanted Walter to try a cleansing detox, but he’s such a man about those things. So pigheaded!
Apple? Orange? Carrot?
Apple, please.
I’ll be right back! Make yourself at home.
Izabel exits to the kitchen, returning with a tall glass of apple juice.
Jo-Jo takes a sip.
Thanks. This really is delicious.
I’m so glad you like it.
You have a lovely voice, Mrs. Leighton. Do I detect an accent?
Yes, was born in Brazil.
Really? How did you meet Senator Leighton?
You PR types are so curious!
That’s what makes us good at our jobs.
I was in the Miss Universe Pageant. I met Walter at a fundraiser.
The senator was smitten.
Love at first sight, he said. But that was 20 years ago.
How romantic. I…I…
Is something wrong, Joan?
I feel a bit dizzy.
Jo-Jo slumps over as Mrs. Leighton takes the glass from her hand.
Yes, GHB will do that to you.
Jo-Jo’s phone pings. It’s Senator Leighton.
Your minion wants to reschedule.
Izabel reads the text on Jo-Jo’s phone, and then speaks to the unconscious body in front of her.
You were right. He was held up in committee.
Let me answer that for you.
Laughing, Izabel replies to the senator’s text on Jo-Jo’s phone.
Too bad Mistress won’t live to make that appointment.
Many hours later, Jo-Jo awakens. It’s dark outside. She’s tied to a chair.
Izabel Leighton sits across from her, holding a gun.
Finally!
Mrs. Leighton?
Miss Avery.
You know who I am?
Of course. You’ve caused me a great deal of trouble, Jo-Jo.
But I guess I should thank you.
What for?
For saving me the trouble of getting rid of Forrester.
Forrester?
Shall I give you a second to put all the pieces together?
You?
I hired him, he hired you, and here we are.
You must want your husband out of the race very badly.
Out of the race? Not at all!
I want him to win.
Why?
Because when he’s president, he’ll do everything I tell him to.
You’re blackmailing your own husband?
I’ve got some very interesting plans for this country.
He’ll never go along with them.
Yes he will. The Leighton legacy means everything to him.
A president with a mistress is one thing, but one who licks a pair of kinky boots while being flogged?
Jo-Jo realizes the cross is still around her neck. She may have a chance.
Keeping her face neutral, she responds.
You have no proof.
Izabel aims the gun at Jo-Jo’s kneecap.
I’ll start by shooting there. You’ll volunteer the information, eventually.
Santa do Pau oco…Vai te fuder, porra!
You speak Portuguese. How nice!
A man walks into the room.
What did she say?
Oh, hello, darling. She says I’m someone who only plays at being good.
She also suggests I go screw myself.
Dr. Dante? What the hell are you doing here?
Miss Avery, I think you’ve met my lover?
Dante gives Izabel a deep kiss.
He moves to Jo-Jo and removes her pendant. He takes out the USB and shows it to Izabel.
Here’s what you’re after. I’ll keep it safe for us.
He slips it into his pocket.
What? How did you two get together?
She came to me for a cosmetic procedure. One thing led to another.
Luther’s the only man who’s ever seen the real me.
What can I say? She’s charming. Brilliant. A tigress in bed…
I fell in love with her.
And I with you, meu amor, but now, we must dispose of Miss Avery.
Izabel points the gun at Jo-Jo’s heart. Casually, Dante steps in the line of fire.
Allow me to do the honors?
Smiling, Izabel hands him the gun.
Perfect.
Suddenly, the door crashes open. Quinn bursts into the room.
Damn it, Dante! What are you thinking?
Quinn draws his weapon.
Luther!
I love you, Izabel, but I can’t let you go through with it.
Dante turns his gun on Izabel.
It was one thing passing along intel to your South American cronies, but this is just too big.
Bastard!
Izabel lunges for her gun. It goes off, firing into the ceiling. Quinn shoots her dead.
Izabel, NO!
Dante drops his gun.
Dante, are you all right?
I never meant for it to end this way. I’m so sorry, Izabel.
When did you figure out she hired Forrester?
The last time we made love. About a week ago.
Yes. She told me her husband was being blackmailed. Gave me details.
But that was…
Before I met with the senator.
Right. Only someone who was in on it could have known.
Luther, you should have told us immediately.
I know, but I thought if I could just bring her in myself, make things right…
She’d still have spent the rest of her life in prison.
And blamed me for all of it. I know.
Quinn’s face softens.
You truly loved her.
Yes, but after I found out she paid Forrester to kill someone—
I couldn’t look the other way.
I’m not sure how The Agency’s going to handle things from here.
Of course I take full responsibility for my actions. Whatever happens, happens.
Dante hands the USB to Quinn.
I’ll make arrangements for her. My last act for The Agency.
He gently lifts Izabel in his arms.
Goodbye, Jo-Jo. Good luck.
Dante carries Izabel’s body out.
Why didn’t he stop her sooner?
It was partly love, but also—
He couldn’t risk the recording falling into the wrong hands.
Hers or anyone else’s.
Exactly.
Quinn unties Jo-Jo.
What happens to me now?
That’s undecided. The agency could use someone with your specialized skill set.
Interesting proposition.
You might look good in a white hat.
You know, I was really thinking of retiring, but I’d consider your offer—
Depending on the job description.
You’d be working directly under me.
Funny, that’s exactly what I had in mind.
