Finders Cheaters - Episode 1
by Phyllis Korkki
Hey Sis. I don’t know if I should tell you this…
Tell me what?
Now you have to tell me.
I think I saw Tanner last night.
Where?
Out at the 456 Club, dancing.
Tanner? He doesn’t even know how to dance.
The only time I saw him dance he looked like a chicken.
Well he must have taken lessons because he was shredding up the dance floor.
Hmmm. That’s weird.
Was he out with his friends?
No.
What do you mean no?
He was kind of…dancing with one woman all night.
Are you sure it was Tanner?
Clubs are so dark.
Well, he had a baseball cap pulled low over his head.
So I can’t be 100 percent sure.
You didn’t go up to him?
No.
Why not?
Because he was with another woman!
It would have been kind of awkward, you know?
I wish you would have.
Because maybe it wasn’t him.
Maybe.
Did he see you?
I’m pretty sure he didn’t.
Now that you mention it, maybe it wasn’t him.
Forget I said anything, okay?
Christa, I can’t forget!
I’m engaged to Tanner.
I don’t want to marry a man who goes out dancing with other women.
And maybe does more with them…
I’m going to text him right now.
Okay, let me know what he says.
Jenny immediately texts Tanner.
Babe, where were you last night?
Why are you asking, hun?
Just answer the question.
I was home watching a movie on Netflix.
Just chilling because I knew you were working late.
Which movie?
Geez, why the third degree?
I’m just curious.
It was The Equalizer with Denzel Washington.
That’s one of your faves, isn’t it?
Yeah, I never get tired of that one.
But what’s going here, Jen?
I feel like I’m on trial!
The truth is, Christa thought she saw you at the club last night.
With a woman.
What?!
Babe, I swear I was here at home.
Missing you.
And besides, you know I hate to dance.
Yeah, that’s what I told Christa.
I’m sorry, but she really did think it was you.
Nah, you know you’re my one and only.
You coming over tonight?
I’d love to watch Netflix with you this time.
And chill for real 😉
Me too! I’ll be over at 7.
Love you! 😍
Love you too ❤️
At first Jenny feels a huge relief.
She smiles as she thinks of her upcoming wedding.
But there’s a tiny part of her that still feels suspicious.
To tamp down her emotions, she pulls out her computer and does a search.
Then she texts her sister.
He says he wasn’t at the club last night and was watching The Equalizer on Netflix.
And do you believe him?
At first I did.
But something was nagging at me.
So I went into Netflix…
AND THE EQUALIZER IS NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE.
He’s cheating on me, Christa!
Oh wow, that does look really bad.
I’m so sorry.
But wait!
What?
Maybe he just got his streaming services mixed up.
Maybe he saw it on Amazon Prime or Hulu.
I’m checking right now.
Looks like it IS on Amazon Prime.
Can you find out if he gets Prime?
I’m going over there tonight.
I’ll find out then.
And I’m also going to see if I can get ahold of his phone.
To see if there’s any sign of suspicious activity.
Detective Jenny, on the case!
Jenny heads over to Tanner’s place.
He gives her a big hug and a kiss.
Then he smiles that lopsided smile at her that always drives her crazy.
They snuggle on the couch and watch 50 First Dates together.
After it ends, Tanner is drifting off to sleep when Jenny casually asks him a question.
Babe, do you subscribe to Amazon Prime?
Huh?
No, I just have Netflix.
Oh.
Tanner is soon fast asleep on the couch, lying on his stomach.
Ever so carefully, Jenny eases his phone out of his back pocket.
On the screen is a message.
Can’t wait to see you tomorrow. 7, right? 😉
Alright, what’s going on here?!
Tanner jerks awake and sits up on the couch.
Whuh?
Who’s Vera?
Uh…
You shouldn’t be looking at my phone!
Don’t change the subject.
Also, you weren’t home last night.
Because The Equalizer is NOT available on Netflix right now.
Oh boy.
Well?
I can explain.
I’m listening.
Vera is my dance teacher.
Your dance teacher?
Yeah, I’ve been taking lessons.
To surprise you.
So you wouldn’t be embarrassed by my dancing at the wedding.
We were out at the club last night practicing.
Really?
Really, babe.
So much for the surprise!
Jenny sits down on the couch.
Oh, okay.
Wow, I’m sorry.
That’s really nice of you.
But you shouldn’t have tried to deceive me like that.
And you shouldn’t have looked at my text messages!
Okay, I guess we’re even.
Now why don’t you let me prove how much I love you?
Two hours later, Jenny texts Christa from Tanner’s place.
She tells her sister about Vera and the dance lessons.
Well then, that explains it!
He did have some dope moves.
There’s just one thing that’s nagging at me.
What’s that?
It’s the wink emoji that Vera used at the end of her text message to Tanner.
It doesn’t seem like the kind of emoji that a teacher would use with a student.
I can’t help wondering if Vera is a dance teacher at all.
Are you crazy?!
Some people just use a lot of emojis.
I hope I’m wrong.
And I feel kind of silly about this, but I want to check one last thing…
Because this is the man I’m planning to marry.
Can you meet me at the parking lot of Tanner’s apartment complex tomorrow at 6:30?
Ok, Sis, whatever you say.
The next night, Jenny and Christa wait in Christa’s car for Tanner to emerge from his apartment complex.
After he gets in his car and drives off, they follow him at a discreet distance.
Twenty minutes later, he parks his car on the street and gets out.
It’s the moment of truth…
They park a little further down and they wait to see which building Tanner enters.
They get out of the car and walk slowly, follow his path inside.
You know, this is a little sick, but I’m kind of enjoying it.
Maybe I should become a private detective.
You have a suspicious enough mind for it, that’s for sure.
Hey, you’re the one who started this!
I guess it’s hereditary.
The building consists of a combination of businesses and residences.
Once inside, they can hear salsa music wafting down the stairwell.
Christa points her finger at the plaques in the entryway.
Look!
One of the names on the plaques is Vera’s Dance Studio.
So it looks like he really IS taking dance lessons.
Oh wow, I feel so foolish.
How could I not have trusted him?!
Someone comes inside and opens the inner door.
Jenny goes in behind him and motions Christa to follow.
Now I want to peek inside and see him dance!
She must be some teacher if she can help HIM.
Be careful! What if he sees you?
Then I’ll apologize and say I’ll never do it again. Which I won’t.
They follow the music up one flight of stairs.
The door to Vera’s Dance Studio is slightly ajar.
Jenny peeks in and gasps.
Vera and Tanner are involved in some moves, alright…
But they are definitely NOT dancing.
They are doing something a LOT more intimate.
Jenny sees where the stereo is, walks over and shuts off the music.
Vera and Tanner see her and jump apart.
Baby! I can explain!!
I’m waiting.
Vera rushes out of the room.
There is a gaping silence in the air.
The fact is, Tanner CAN’T explain.
The wedding is off.
She and Christa leave the room.
Two months later, Christa and Jenny are sitting in the office that Jenny recently started renting.
It was for the best, Jenny.
Imagine if you’d married him and THEN found out he was a cheater.
I know. That would have been a lot worse.
You know, I think it was mainly his crooked smile that I fell for.
And his soft lips.
That’s not enough to sustain a lifetime of togetherness.
No it isn’t.
You know what? I barely miss him anymore.
And what’s been great about this experience is that it helped me find my true calling.
She holds up a brand new plaque for her building’s entryway.
It says: ATC Investigations.
The Are They Cheating Detective Agency is now open for business.
Let’s celebrate at the club!
