Holiday Hearts - Episode 1
by Chris Marie Green
Seasons Greetings, neighbor šŸ‘‹ šŸŽ…
Just a friendly word from the apartment across the way…
You forgot to close your curtains 😳
Oh man, Hanna — I’m sorry about that!
I didn’t realize anyone else was here during holiday break.
My building is deserted. My roommates went home.
Same here.
I think it’s just you and me.
Thanks so much. You saved me some embarrassment 😌
Imagine if I’d been completely in the buff!
Hanna leans against the wall near the closed curtains of her window.
She tries NOT to imagine that full image of Max…
Especially since she can’t stop thinking about her glimpse of him with his shirt off—
Muscled chest and rock-solid arms…
Tousled dark hair against a handsome square jawline.
She’s always been curious about her neighbor Max, but now she is even more…
Why the heck is someone like him alone during the holidays?
Doesn’t he at least have a girlfriend back home to visit?
No problem. Happy Holidays!
LOL. Right. I’m not very into the holidays.
Who are you — Scrooge?
Bah Righteous Humbug šŸ‘¹
I notice you didn’t go home to celebrate the holidays, either.
True, but it’s not because I dislike them.
She peeks through the crack in her curtains.
When she sees Max standing in front of his window, her heart leaps.
Saw you!
Hanna blushes and moves out of the way.
Why don’t you just open the curtains?
I’m dressed now.
Yeah, but I’m still in my pajamas!
Lord knows I’ve seen a pair of THOSE before.
Well, mine are baggy and flannel and for MY eyes only!
šŸ™„
Anyway, to answer your question about winter vacation…
I almost went home with one of my friends but…
What?
I felt like having a quiet holiday break. That’s all.
Hanna peeks out the curtains again.
Max is still there, dressed in a tee shirt and jeans, his hair carelessly ruffled.
And he still looks SO cute.
Hah — I see you’re not done playing your reindeer games 🦌 🦌
Hanna’s pulse beats double time, but then the timer on her oven goes off.
Gotta go. I’m making gingerbread men.
Bah humbug.
šŸ‘¹
Hanna spends the rest of the evening baking, but she can’t get her mind off her neighbor…
And sure enough, she’s back at the window that night, peeking through the curtains again.
Max’s apartment is dark.
Seeing an opportunity to spread some holiday cheer, she runs over to his door with some cookies.
Then she decides to REALLY get Max into the holiday spirit by opening her curtains to reveal her decorated apartment.
She turns on the TV and waits.
A half hour later
Finally — you opened the curtains!
There’s also a plate of gingerbread men who showed up to watch football with me.
Are you the one I should thank for that?
Yup! Have I won you over to the yuletide side yet?
Good try.
You’re still resistant even after witnessing my winter wonderland decorations?
When she glances toward Max’s window, she sees the glow of his own TV.
The light dances on him, where he sits on his couch.
It feels comforting to know that they’re both watching TV at the same time…
Even a little intimate.
Sorry, but even your amazing decorations won’t win me over.
šŸ™
They remind me of home and how it’s snowing there right now.
Why is that such a bad thing?
Max?
Maybe we should just talk about what we’re watching on TV instead. Deal?
Fair enough. But you won’t want to know what I’M watching.
Since you put it THAT way…
I DEFINITELY do.
It’s Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
šŸ¤¦ā€
Told ya.
Actually, I used to watch Rudolph when I was a kid.
Whoa…and here I thought you were BORN jaded.
šŸ˜
Aren’t YOU too old to be watching that movie though?
No! I love Rudolph’s little red nose and Hermey the elf who just wants to be a dentist!
I watch it every year, mostly because…
Loneliness hits Hanna like an avalanche of snow, leaving her with a burn of longing.
Because…?
No use holding back now.
Watching Rudolph used to be a family tradition.
Dad would hand-make one of the toys from the Island of Misfit Toys for me.
And Mom would hide red bulbs around the house for me to find.
Wow. Your parents sound great.
😊
But I’m just wondering…
Why wouldn’t you want to go home during the holidays if that’s what’s waiting for you there?
An ache settles around Hanna’s heart.
Hanna?
There’s nothing to go home to anymore, Max.
?
My parents died in a car accident a couple years ago, so the holidays are…
She hits send because she can’t finish typing.
Jeez…
I’m really sorry to hear that.
I shouldn’t have asked.
It’s okay. It’s just that this time of year is harder than most…
Especially since I don’t have family anywhere else.
As she swallows back the lump in her throat, Max walks to his window.
His body is silhouetted by the glowing light.
I know this won’t make you feel any better…
But I don’t have anyone to go home to, either.
You don’t?
No. My reason for staying here during break isn’t as awful as yours, but…
Well, last Christmas, my parents had an epic blow out.
My mom was never around much anyway, and she took off to Greece with her newest boyfriend.
And Dad was always just as distant, so when he went to live in Costa Rica.
It wasn’t a shock.
That doesn’t mean that it wasn’t hard.
You…didn’t want to spend the holidays with either of them this year?
Because of that?
A few seconds pass.
No. I tried to contact both of them this year to get together, but it didn’t pan out.
But, hey — they did send gift cards šŸŽ‰
Oh, Max…
Now I can see why you don’t have the heart for the holidays.
The light from his screen reveals the loneliness on his face.
I wish I had the same heart that you still do.
Even after losing so much, YOU’RE still able to see what’s good about the holidays.
I’d do anything to get that back.
It seems Max is just as alone as she is during this season of togetherness…
But even with him so close by, they’re each isolated.
Maybe you CAN get your holiday heart back, Max.
But you have to work at it.
Well, if there’s anyone who could give me hope, it’s you.
Max turns off the TV, and his apartment gets cloaked in darkness.
His texts stop. Hanna’s confused.
Eventually, Hanna turns off her own TV.
She spends a silent night full of loneliness.
When morning comes, she forlornly looks into Max’s window, expecting to find emptiness.
But what she discovers makes her do a double take—
Snowflakes, candy canes, and bright lights glimmer back at her.
Max? What’s happening over there?
šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø
You got me, Hanna.
I couldn’t stop thinking about you and your story…
And it suddenly hit me—
That holiday spirit really isn’t out of reach, because it lives right across from my apartment.
Hanna presses a hand over her pounding heart.
Really?
Yeah. So I decided to start with some late-night shopping and decorating and…
Well, you’ll see when you open the door.
Still confused, Hanna opens her door to find something waiting on the floor.
A red bulb?
Just like my mom used to hide for me?
šŸ™‚
You’ll want to check the rest of the hallway for five more.
With a surprised, overwhelmed laugh, Hanna begins to search…
And then laughs even more when she finds the next bulb behind a potted plant.
By the time she finds the last one, she’s as elated as she used to be with her mom.
I’m done!
Now there’s something else waiting at MY door…
At Max’s, Hanna sees a stuffed beige teddy bear with magic marker dots on its fur…
A makeshift Spotted Elephant from the Island of Misfit Toys?
Joy washes over her as she scoops it into her arms and squeezes it tight.
Then Max opens the door.
Inside his apartment is a winter wonderland.
His green-blue eyes sparkle.
I can’t believe you did this.
I had to.
Somehow you got me hooked on Christmas songs, gingerbread men, and holiday movies.
I feel…just like I used to.
Max grabs her hands.
Hanna, you made me realize that the season is what WE make of it—
And instead of keeping all that distance between your window and mine…
I really want to make something of the holidays with YOU.
Because you’re amazing…
Even after life dealt you a blow, you didn’t quit.
And that gives me…hope.
Max holds out his hand, inviting her into his festive apartment.
She responds with a joyful laugh.
Happy Holidays, Hanna.
She melts into his smile as he brings her over the threshold…
Into a place of bright, colorful lights…
And the warmth of a beautiful, hopeful new season.
