How to Assemble a Tent...And Find Love - Episode 1
by Sarah Hawley
Ayumi drives into the campground.
Her friend, Julie, invited some people from their class on a camping trip.
The forest is hours out of town, and she’s early.
There’s one car already parked at the campsite…
But she doesn’t see an actual person.
Ayumi drags her tent out of the car…
And tries to start setting it up.
Wait, how does this work?
She grapples with the poles…
Then hears someone chuckling behind her.
Need help?
Ayumi spins at the familiar voice.
Her stomach drops.
Dan?
The senior class president is right there…
Grinning at her.
So what’s going on with this tent?
Ayumi brandishes one of the poles like a sword.
I don’t want your help.
Dan’s eyebrows shoot up.
Whoa, why are you being so hostile?
Ayumi rolls her eyes.
Says the guy who loves arguing with me in class.
Oh, come on. It’s fun!
What are you doing here?
Julie invited me.
What a traitor.
Why are you so upset?
Seriously?
She taps the tent pole on the ground as she counts the reasons.
In sixth grade, you pulled my hair so hard I cried.
I misjudged my strength.
In eighth grade, you made fun of my glasses.
They were bright purple with cats on them!
You set my hair on fire in chemistry.
It was an accident!
And last year, you told Dylan Cooper…
That you wouldn’t date me…
If I were the last girl on the planet.
That one hurts the most, if she’s being honest.
Dan’s eyes widen.
You heard that?
He TOLD me you told him that.
It wasn’t like that—
Look, I don’t want your help.
Dan sighs.
Fine. Put up your tent by yourself.
He walks away.
Ayumi feels a little guilty.
Dan looked weirdly…sad.
Whatever.
Hopefully everyone else will get here soon.
Two hours later, Ayumi has succeeded in setting up her tent.
Although it looks a little…strange.
No one else has shown up.
She walks all around…
Until she finally gets reception on her phone…
And calls Julie.
Hello?
Where are you?
A storm is heading that way.
The road is washed out.
We’re all stuck in town.
Does that mean you aren’t coming?
That’s what it means. I’m sorry.
Then I’ll be stuck here alone with Dan!
Julie laughs.
Maybe the two of you can finally stop fighting…
And just kiss already.
Yeah, right.
He hates me.
I don’t know about that…
A rumble echoes through the air.
Ayumi looks up…
And sees dark clouds massing over the trees.
Great.
After she ends her call with Julie…
She heads back to camp.
Dan is poking at a fire.
Want a hot dog?
Fine.
She sits on an upturned log.
No one else is coming.
There’s a storm.
I guess we’re on our own then.
He slides a hot dog onto a paper plate.
Here.
Thanks.
Dan sits next to her with his own plate.
So first…
I want to say that pulling the pigtails of cute girls…
Is a time-honored male tradition.
What are you talking about?
I’m trying to plead my case.
To explain my sixth-grade behavior.
He smiles, and Ayumi can’t help smiling back.
All right, fine.
Her heart speeds up at being called cute.
What about the rest of it?
Dan chews and swallows.
Okay, eighth grade. The glasses.
Cats or not, that was rude.
No excuses?
Nope. I can admit when I'm wrong.
Ayumi gapes at him.
Dan shifts on the log.
Don’t look at me like that.
I was 14.
People change, you know.
Yeah, I guess.
What about lighting me on fire?
That was a legitimate chemistry mistake.
Your hair was an unfortunate casualty.
He winks.
That bob you got afterward looked really good, though.
Ayumi rolls her eyes.
Don’t pretend to flirt with me.
Just then, the sky opens up.
Rain drenches the campsite.
The fire hisses with each heavy drop.
Ayumi leaps to her feet.
We need to take shelter!
She zips herself into her tent.
Rain pounds against the top.
The fabric is sagging.
She shivers as she gets into her sleeping bag.
Stupid girl.
Her heart flutters.
This is why she avoids Dan.
He’s never liked her, and she…
Well, she’s always liked him too much.
Hours later, Ayumi shifts in her sleeping bag…
And lowers her hand into a puddle.
She shoots upright.
Oh my god.
She shines a flashlight around the tent…
A quarter of it has flooded…
And the roof is drooping.
No, no, no.
The wind whips outside.
The tent sways…
And the puddle keeps growing.
A particularly fierce blast of wind shakes the tent.
The canvas smacks her in the head.
Ack!
Is everything all right?
He’s shouting over the storm.
No! My tent is flooding!
Come over to mine.
Ayumi hesitates.
That seems like a bad idea.
But the water is at the foot of her sleeping bag.
So she grabs her things and staggers outside.
Rain pelts her skin.
Dan sits in the opening to his tent.
His flashlight guides the way.
Hurry!
Ayumi crawls into his tent.
She slicks her wet hair back from her forehead.
Thanks.
Dan hands her a blanket.
You look cold.
Ayumi wraps herself up.
Roll out your sleeping bag.
There’s just enough room for both of them.
Ayumi arranges her sleeping bag.
She’s very aware of how close Dan is to her.
Your poor tent.
Ayumi shakes her head.
It’s a goner.
I should have asked you for help when I was setting it up.
I won’t say I told you so…
But only because you would probably kill me if I did.
Ayumi chuckles.
Fair enough.
She settles into her sleeping bag.
You know, I never got to explain…
What?
Dan sighs.
Why I told Dylan I’d never date you.
She stiffens.
It’s because you don’t like me.
It’s fine.
Dan runs a hand through his hair.
I lied.
Ayumi sits up.
What?
Dan winces.
I only told Dylan I wouldn’t date you…
To protect myself.
Ayumi stares at him.
What do you mean?
Because YOU told Dylan you would never date ME.
You did tell him that, didn’t you.
Well…yes.
But only because I thought you hated me.
Well I don’t.
You don’t?
Come on, Ayumi.
You’re beautiful. Smart. Funny.
I even liked the cat glasses back in eighth grade.
Ayumi’s cheeks heat up.
He’s looking at her so earnestly.
And Ayumi…believes him.
Okay.
He blinks a few times.
Okay what?
I forgive you.
She snuggles back down into her sleeping bag.
You do?
I do. People change.
So…does this mean I can take you out sometime?
If I stop being an idiot?
Are you really asking me on a date?
Yeah.
Then yes, you may take me out sometime.
They smile at each other…
And Ayumi feels a weight lift off her chest.
But a few minutes later, she starts shivering.
Then she realizes that her toes are cold.
No, they’re not just cold – they’re wet.
She sits up.
Oh, no.
What?
She giggles helplessly.
YOUR tent is flooding, too!
He launches himself upright.
What??!
I guess we both needed help.
All right, we’re sleeping in the car.
Ayumi smiles.
I don’t mind.
Dan’s face softens.
Me, neither.
Not if I’m with you.
