Joy Ride - Episode 1
by Annie Rains
Looks like I’ll be late to our Girl’s Night.
What? Why?!
My car just broke down. Third time this week.
Ugh! Where are you?
The side of I-40, somewhere around exit 110.
FYI, being stranded on the side of a dark interstate is creepy.
I’d come get you, but Tif and I are already on our second bottle of wine 🙁
Want me to send my brother?
No way — I don’t want to make him to do that on a Friday night.
Hold on, I’ll ask him!
I’ve been wanting you two to meet anyway. I think you might hit it off.
But then he’ll always remember me as the girl who ruined his Friday night!
Yeah right! He’ll be meeting you—
I’d say that’s an automatic upgrade from whatever he’s doing.
Please? Then you and I could be sisters 👯‍
Whoa! I need a ride, not a ring, LOL.
Fine. Stay stranded.
Ugh, you’re right. I don’t have many options.
A tow truck might take hours, and I don’t want to be here all night.
He says he’s on the way! He’ll be the hot guy in a sports car 😜
Thanks! I’ll hang tight until he gets here.
Lock your car doors.
Definitely!
15 minutes later
Is he there yet?
No…wait. Headlights just pulled in behind me.
That must be him! See you soon 🙂
Don’t drink all the wine before I get there!
Bree waits for the driver to tap on her window.
When he does, she’s surprised to find him even more attractive than Erin had described.
He has a deep smooth, deep voice that instantly melts her nerves.
I’m Ryan. Do you need a ride?
Bree nods, thanks him, and follows him to a black corvette.
After buckling up, Ryan merges with traffic back onto I-40.
Bree texts Erin.
OMG! You weren’t kidding. Your brother is HAWT!
Is he seriously single?
Yep!
There must be something wrong with him.
I don’t think so, but I might be a little partial.
Ryan pulls out a cigarette and lights it.
You never told me your brother smokes?
???
He doesn’t.
Erin, he’s smoking right now.
That’s one strike against him for me.
🙁 I guess we won’t be sisters after all.
I’m going to lecture him when he gets here.
Like I’d let him come into your house! No guys allowed at Girl’s Night, remember?
Well, I’ll talk to him tomorrow then.
You sure about that? He doesn’t talk much…
😂 😂 Are you sure you’re describing my brother?
I can never get him to shut up!
Oh, he just texted me. Swat him for me, and tell him that texting and driving isn’t safe.
Bree looks over at her driver, who doesn’t have his cell phone out.
Are you sure he texted you?
Yep. He’s probably telling me how gorgeous you are 🙂
Bree gets a sinking feeling in her stomach as she waits for the next text.
She looks out her window to see where she is.
But it’s pitch black outside and she can’t see a thing.
I’m confused. My brother found your car, but says you aren’t in it.
Not anymore. I’m with him.
No, you’re not.
You mean this guy isn’t your brother? Are you sure?
He’s cute and drives a sports car, just like you said.
He said his name is Ryan?
My brother’s name is Phil!
Bree swallows as she glances over at her driver.
Accepting a ride from him was a big mistake.
What do I do?!
Tell him to pull over and let you out!
Bree clears her throat.
Can you drop me off at the next gas station?
I can call someone to get me from there.
The driver smirks but doesn’t respond. Bree turns back to her cell phone.
He’s ignoring me.
Do you have mace?
No! Just my phone.
If he was going to hurt me, he wouldn’t let me keep this, right?
Hopefully. Where are you?
I don’t know. Still on I-40 somewhere.
I’ll call the police!
Wait, wait…let me try talking to him again.
Bree swallows.
Can you please tell me who you are?
The driver shoots her that terrible smirk again.
I already told you, my name is Ryan.
I think I’m gonna need a little more than that—
You’re a stranger driving me down the highway!
That didn’t seem to be a problem for you when you got into my car.
I thought you were someone else!
To her surprise, Ryan starts laughing — hard. He wipes his eyes.
You thought I was someone else?
Someone you knew??
Yes! Well…kind of. I thought you were my friend’s brother.
This is hilarious! Oh man, I’m gonna give you a story to tell your friend…
What?
You like fast cars?
I call this the joyride…
Bree lifts an eyebrow and crosses her arms in front of her.
Give me a break.
But then Ryan presses down on the gas pedal…
Bree’s stomach drops.
She gets an incoming text.
Phil is driving on I-40 like you. Maybe he can find you!
What does your car look like?
It’s a black Corvette—
The driver is a tall man. He has his window cracked and a cigarette in his mouth.
Okay, thanks. My brother drives so FAST.
He’ll catch you, I promise!
If he does, I’ll marry him on the spot 👰
But honestly, this guy doesn’t seem as intimidating as he did before—
I think I can handle him.
Bree turns to Ryan again.
Where are we going?
Instead of answering, Ryan lights another cigarette.
Since he hasn’t taken her phone, she snaps a picture of him.
What the hell was that for?
You said you’re taking me on some kind of “joy ride…”
Ryan rolls his eyes at Bree’s use of air quotes.
And you don’t think I’m going to get some kind of collateral?
Collateral?
Bree sticks out her chin.
Yeah. I will send this picture straight to the cops if you don’t drop me off right now.
Jeez! Slow your roll. I thought we were just having fun.
Well scaring the crap out of me is NOT fun!
All right, fine. I’ll let you off at the next exit, okay?
Yes, thank you.
Bree crosses her arms and looks out the window.
She can still see a small smirk on Ryan’s face.
She gets another text.
Still there?
Yes. He said he’s going to drop me off at the next exit — Exit 118.
Oh, good! My brother is right behind you.
Bree looks around at the nearby cars and spots a red Porsche.
It zooms up to the driver’s side of the car that she’s in.
He’s here! I see him!
I knew he’d find you!
The two cars drive side by side along the interstate.
But then Ryan pulls ahead.
Bree???
My brother says he lost you.
We just pulled off at Exit 118.
Okay, good. Phil says he’s pretty close.
A few minutes later, Ryan pulls his corvette into a service station.
Ryan gets out, walks around to the passenger side door, and opens it.
Your free ride is over.
And I’m gonna need you to delete that photo of me from your phone.
Ryan isn’t smirking anymore.
In fact, the seething look he gives Bree sends her trembling fingers to the delete button.
Showing him her phone, she presses it.
There. Happy?
But Ryan doesn’t answer.
Instead, he sulks over to the driver’s seat and drives away.
Bree?
I’m here. He just dropped me off at the only gas station off of Exit 118.
It’s over. Thank God it’s over.
Seriously! Are you okay?
Just rattled.
I don’t think he meant anything by it, but…he could’ve killed me.
Omg, I know. Okay, Phil will be there soon.
Stay where you are!
5 minutes later
Bree is sitting on the bench outside when the red Porsche pulls into the gas station parking lot.
Bree snaps a picture of the car and texts it to Erin.
Is this his car?
That’s the one!
A tall, gorgeous man approaches her.
Bree sighs. He’s even more handsome than Ryan.
Just from looking at him, she finally feels safe.
But she decides to be extra careful and snaps a picture of him.
She texts it to Erin.
Is this your brother?
Yes! Bree, meet Phil.
You’re right. He’s cute ❤️
Are you on your way to Girl’s Night now?
No. Phil thinks I should file a police report, and I actually agree.
Yeah, good point. That was pretty creepy of that guy. Come over after?
Of course. But I have to cancel our Bachelor viewing sesh tomorrow…
I have a date with my future husband 😍
