Kiara's Game - Part 10 - The Fire
by Kiara Reynard
I’d never kill my friends.
Zoe, Abby, and Maya mean everything to me.
Kiara, only Abby and Zoe are going to die.
Maya isn’t your friend.
In fact, she’s very much your enemy.
And as it turns out, Maya is untouchable.
At least for the time being.
This is unbelievable.
You keep telling me there’s nothing I can do to stop this…
So why tell me any of it in the first place?
So you can at least try.
So you’ll KNOW that you gave it your all.
And you’ll know it was me who tried to help you.
Because in the beginning, there’s nothing but anger and guilt.
The beginning of what?
Your new life.
You wanna be the guy who tried to help me?
Then tell me where my friends are.
If I do, more people will be hurt.
And I’ll probably be one of them.
TELL. ME.
You can live with that—with putting lives at risk?
Look, you should know I’d die for my friends.
You want the two of us to have a connection?
Then you should learn how much this means to me.
You want my trust?
EARN it.
Tell me.
All right. But remember…
I warned you.
Come with me.
As we felt our way through the tunnels of the crumbling mansion…
The distinct scent of gas pierced my nostrils.
Wait a second.
What?
Suddenly, the world quaked—burned—
as chunks of crumbling mansion came flying at us.
The heat was unbearable.
Are you okay, Kiara?
Miraculously, I didn’t have a scratch on me.
But I wasn’t okay. And neither was the house.
The mansion was consumed in flames.
And so were my hopes of seeing Zoe and Abby alive.
That’s when Connor’s warning came slamming back into my mind.
Everyone in that house was likely dead because of me.
Were they still in there?
We won’t know for sure until we get closer.
Come on—we don’t have a lot of time.
That fire was actually a good sign.
Now there’s a chance you can save them.
What? How?
The house is on FIRE, Connor.
I know.
But they’re still alive down there—I can feel them.
You can help them, but it has to be tonight.
They won’t live to see sunrise.
I was so creeped out that as we crawled through the tunnels,
I snuck out my phone and surreptitiously texted Maya.
Maya, it’s Kiara…
I need you to listen to me and listen closely…
Kiara? Are you guys all right?
Please tell me Zoe is with you?!
She’s gone, Maya.
And Abby’s still missing
But I think I can get them back.
You god damn well better.
Now tell me what’s going on?!
And so I did. I told Maya everything that had happened.
We texted for a bit—our first real conversation—
And then four hours later, she checked back in with me.
Kiara, are you still out there?
Please tell me you’re okay?
The truth was, I wasn’t okay. Definitely not in that moment.
I was so afraid to answer Maya’s text…
That my hands were actually shaking.
We can’t find them
I keep calling out to them…
But no one’s answering.
I hear the panic in my own voice, Maya, and it’s scaring the shit out of me.
Calm down.
I can’t.
This place is so dark and so…heavy…
It feels haunted.
Just keep looking Kiara, please…
We’ve been looking for hours. I didn’t realize this place was so big.
You can find them. You always find things.
You figure things out.
Look, I know I can be a little mean to you.
But I have my reasons.
You’re destined for something great.
What’s that supposed to mean?
That you have the ability to find them.
Don’t put that on me!
This isn’t that stupid Kiara’s Game.
Our friends were kidnapped.
And if I don’t find them they’ll be dead by dawn.
What?
That’s what Connor said.
If I don’t find them. They die.
Maybe it’s time to call the cops.
NO! The cops have been here.
They don’t give a shit.
Mr. Archivolt was able to sweet talk them away.
That man’s pure evil, Maya.
God, you shouldn’t even be down there.
But I AM down here.
Kiara, listen to me…
The reason I treat you like shit is because…
I’m intimidated by you.
I don’t know how you see what you see or do the things you do,
But I KNOW that you’re special.
But how, Maya?
What can I really do?
How are any of my freaky ‘abilities’ actually helpful??
Maybe that’s why you’re down there.
For answers.
And our friends are out there.
They need your help.
Don’t fail them.
I’m doing what I can.
But God, it’s just feels like…death… over here.
Kiara, I don’t like this.
There has to be someone we can call.
Trust me, I wish there was.
But I’m the only one who can do this—well, me and Connor.
We have to.
They’re close.
How do you know that?
Because I think I hear Zoe…
Screaming.
Shit!
They’re here, Maya…in there.
It’s far off, but I hear screaming.
I can see a little bit too—there’s a flickering light in the distance.
What does it look like?
It’s some kind of man-made tunnel, not a cave.
There are stones lining the walls…
Wood support beams overhead and…
Holy shit, that’s creepy!
What?
There are steel shackles hanging from the walls.
They’re all along this tunnel… every few feet.
There must be hundreds of them.
Kiara, maybe you shouldn’t go in there.
Shit! That’s definitely Abby screaming.
Maya, I have to go!
No! Wait one second, first.
I can’t. I can’t leave them like that.
What direction does the tunnel run?
Northwest, basically.
Let me check something real quick.
Hurry, I’m losing reception.
Shit.
How long do you think that tunnel is?
I have no clue. Why?
I’m not positive, but, according to Google maps…
I think you’re heading into…
The Hallowed Grounds.
My Aunts and Mom NEVER go there. They’re too scared something bad would happen to them there.
Kiara?
KI?!?!?
