Killer Neighbor
by Candice Carmody
Mom, I’m so scared.
What’s wrong, sweetie?
I just saw our neighbor get shot!
Which neighbor?!
Jason — from across the street!
Get away from the window!
Are you away from the window?
Yeah.
Please come home. Are you still at the store?
Yes. But I’m leaving right now.
I’m going to call the police.
Don’t do that!
You’re probably just imagining things.
Then why did you tell me to move away from the window?
That doesn’t make sense!
I’m just trying to get you to calm down.
So you don’t get hysterical the way you do.
Keep texting me.
I’m calling the police now.
They’ll be there soon.
Okay. Tell them I saw a man shoot our neighbor.
A man?
Yeah. He looked like some kind of construction worker—
He was wearing a hard hat.
I just called 911 and gave them the information.
Tell them to send an ambulance, Mom!
Jason might still be alive.
Really?
Idk, I guess the chances aren’t very good.
Mom, I just thought of something.
What?
That creepy guy Bill who lives at the end of the block…
Isn’t he a construction worker?
Honey, that doesn’t prove anything.
Yeah, but I saw him arguing with Jason recently.
He looked really angry. You should’ve seen the look on his face—
It scared me.
Oh my god. Do you really think he did it?
Do you think Bill killed Jason?
That is so sick.
Mom, what about Cindy, Jason’s wife?!
What if she’s in danger?
What if she was home and Bill shot her too?!
Ella, I’m sure Cindy is alright.
How can you be sure?
Should I call 911 too?
No. Don’t do that!
I already did. The police are on their way.
Just stay away from the window.
I keep trying to call you.
I need to hear your voice.
Why aren’t you picking up?
Oh no!!
What is it?
Cindy just ran out of the house.
I told you to stay away from the window!
This is so weird.
I don’t understand.
What, Ella? What?
She’s wearing a construction worker’s uniform.
And a hard hat.
And she’s holding a gun.
That means…
It must have been Cindy who killed Jason!
No. There must be some other explanation.
Mom, it’s her! I recognize her face under the hat.
She must have worn the hat and the uniform to avoid being recognized!
But why would she kill her husband?
OMG, I think…
What, Ella?
I think she’s coming over here.
I don’t hear sirens yet, Mom!
That’s probably because the police don’t want the killer to hear them.
Mom, I hear a key in the lock.
Does Cindy have a key to our house?
She’s opening the door, Mom!
What should I do?
I think she wants to kill me too!! Why?!!
Ella, I want you to pay very close attention to what I tell you.
At the top of your lungs, I want you to shout…
THIS IS ELLA.
But then she’ll know where I am!!
Ella, you know I love you with all my heart, don’t you?
Yeah.
Please. Shout THIS IS ELLA.
At the top of your lungs.
Now.
Okay, Mom…
I trust you.
But if I don’t make it out of here alive…
I love you so much.
I love you too — with all my heart, Ella.
One hour later.
Ella, are you there?
Are you okay?
It’s Mom.
It’s REALLY Mom this time.
Mom? I’m okay.
I did what you told me to do.
And Cindy ran out of the house.
But the police got her.
Jason is dead.
And they arrested her for his murder.
I know, honey.
Wait a minute…
What do you mean, it’s really you?
Let me call you to explain.
Ella’s phone rings, and she answers it on the first ring.
She’s so happy to hear her mother’s voice.
I’m at the police station now.
I just gave them my statement.
What happened to you?!!
That was your father before, texting you.
He was pretending to be me.
What?! Why?
Cindy and your father were having an affair.
Dad was? With Cindy?
I know it’s hard to believe.
It took me awhile to wrap my head around it.
They wanted to run away together.
That’s why she killed Jason.
Oh my god.
It gets worse. Ella, your father…
He kidnapped me.
And he…he was going to kill me too.
He needed money before they ran away, so he planned to collect my life insurance.
I guess Cindy and your father both had the same idea independently.
Mom, that’s crazy! You must have been so scared.
I was. Ella, he followed me to the store.
He came up to me as I was leaving my car. He looked crazed.
I asked him what was wrong.
He forced me into the backseat of the car. He tied my hands behind my back.
Then he drove me to a deserted area…
He was going to shoot me and dump my body in the river!!
What?! Dad was going to do that??
I know. I can’t believe it either. I think I’m still in shock.
Thank God someone saw us in the parking lot and realized I was in trouble.
They called 911.
The police found me just in time.
Oh my god, Mom! I still don’t get how Dad could do that to you!!
And how did he know I was texting you?
I’d left my phone in the cupholder.
And he heard it go off when he was driving.
That’s when he started texting you, pretending to be me.
He wanted you to stay away from our living room window…
So you wouldn’t be a witness to what Cindy did.
Then he realized that Cindy thought I was home…
And that she was coming over to kill me too, right after she killed Jason!
He thought she might kill you by accident instead.
He couldn’t let that happen. He loves you too much.
Oh my god.
I know. I’m so glad you’re alright.
I’m so glad YOU’RE alright.
Please come home.
I’ll be leaving the police station soon.
There is a pause over the phone line.
Ella, there’s something else.
What is it?
God, it feels strange to even tell you this.
Before the police took your father away, he said…
Tell Ella I love her with all my heart.
Oh wow. He texted that to me today, Mom.
Except I thought it was YOU saying that.
You need to always remember something, Ella.
Both he and I love you so much. We always will.
And even though that man is evil to his core…
Even though he and Cindy will be in prison for life…
There will always be one good thing about him.
His love for you.
