Laundry Matt - Episode 1
by Evan Springhetti
I need to come over.
Sorry girl, I’m still at work.
What’s wrong?
I need to do laundry.
Why would you drive an hour to my place to do laundry?
Just go to the laundromat on your block.
That’s the problem…
I’m outside the laundromat right now.
But I can’t go in.
…because you forgot how doors work?
No 😑
He’s here.
Mystery laundry man??
Yup.
Still hot and stubbly?
Obviously!
He even looks good in his laundry-day clothes!
How is that possible??
Oh, us hot people look great in everything 😜
That’s the problem! He’s almost too good looking.
Like, I go to talk to him but when our eyes meet…
My mouth stops working.
You talked to him?!
Does “is this your fabric softener” count?
…no.
C’mon girl, just introduce yourself!
This is what, your third time doing laundry together?
Fifth.
FIFTH?!
Face it, Cara.
You two are meant to be.
What would we even talk about?
Locations for the wedding…
Names for your children…
NOT HELPING, Wendy.
Wait, are you still outside?
…maybe.
Cara.
GROW SOME BACKBONE.
You’re pretty.
You’ve got a killer job.
And you buy the expensive kind of detergent.
YOU ARE A CATCH.
I am, aren’t I?
Now go in there…
And put your clothes in the machine next to his.
Whoa. Power move.
Besides, I bet you look stunning right now.
I’m wearing my college hoodie and pajama pants…
Stunningly relaxed, then.
You know what? You’re right.
Screw it!
I look good in this hoodie!
That’s the spirit!
Now go get him, girl.
Cara takes a deep breath and enters the laundromat.
She sees him.
He’s wearing sweatpants and a shirt covered in holes.
As she walks over, Cara nervously thinks to herself…
C’mon Cara. He’s just a guy.
She gets closer…
The holes in his shirt give her flashes of his chest and abs.
Just a hot…chiseled guy…
Cara freezes in place.
Oh God, I’m chickening out.
No, don’t do that. Follow through, Cara.
Cara starts backing out of the laundromat.
Feet! Stop it! Wrong way!
We’re not supposed to flee!
We’re following through!
Cara heads for the door.
Way to go, Cara.
This guy is so hot I’m literally retreating.
This has to be a new low.
Cara pushes open the door.
Excuse me miss?
Cara turns around.
Hot laundry guy is looking right at her.
Is this yours?
He holds out a bra…
Cara’s polka dot bra.
Cara’s face goes beet red as she hurries over to him.
Oh my god!
It must have fallen out my cart.
She takes the bra and stuffs it back in with her clothes.
You’ve got good taste in undergarments, by the way.
He holds up a pair of his boxers with the same polka-dot pattern.
Polka pals!
Well, look at that!
Cara immediately starts imagining him in the underwear.
Anyway, take care!
You’re going?
But you didn’t wash your clothes.
Uh, you’re right.
I mean…I was leaving because…
…because I forgot my dryer sheets!
So I gotta go.
Just use some of mine.
Laundry guy holds up his box of dryer sheets.
I noticed we use the same brand last time you were here.
Oh, okay. Thanks.
Cara goes to the washer next to his.
This time she actually puts clothes in the machine.
I’ve seen you here a few times actually, haven’t I?
Cara thinks “5 times, to be exact.”
I think so.
I’m Matt, by the way.
Nice to officially meet you, Matt.
I’m Cara.
They shake hands.
Cara. So you must really care-a-bout having clean clothes?
Oh god, don’t tell me you’re a pun guy…
I’m afraid it runs in the family.
So your genes made you corny?
Corny?!
Matt gives Cara a face of mock indignation…
Then flashes her a smile.
Uh…Cara?
Yeah Matt?
You uh…you can let go now.
Cara realizes she’s been holding Matt’s hand this whole time.
Her face heats up again as she releases her grip.
Sorry! I didn’t mean to…I mean I was…
I should focus.
Cara goes back to filling the washer with clothes and detergent.
She inserts quarters into the machine and starts the cycle.
As she goes to put away her remaining quarters, some drop to the ground.
Oh, man down!
No I got it!
Matt and Cara crouch down at the same time…
And Cara accidentally headbutts Matt.
He loses his balance and falls backward.
OH GOD SORRY!
It’s okay!
Never get between a girl and her change.
Lesson learned.
Cara kneels over Matt—
And inspects his forehead.
A small bump is quickly forming.
God, I knew I should’ve just left.
What are you talking about?
Cara steels herself.
When I saw you were in here tonight…
I was going to turn around and go home.
What? Why?
You make me so nervous.
I knew I was going to—
Overflow.
I was gonna say “screw up” but yeah, same thing.
No, I mean your machine.
It’s overflowing.
Cara looks back to see soapy foam cascading from her washer onto the floor.
OH GOD NO.
Cara picks herself up and hurries to the machine.
Careful!
Cara immediately slips on the foam and starts to fall backwards—
But Matt catches her.
Don’t worry, I got you.
Cara can feel the muscles in Matt’s arms and chest support her weight.
He props her upright…
And hits the emergency stop on the machine.
The foam calms down.
I don’t remember the last time we did laundry together being this…
Horrible? Pathetic?
I was gonna say exciting.
Matt beams at Cara…
And she feels that familiar heat rise in her cheeks.
Well, I’m really glad you decided to come inside tonight.
I’ve been hoping I’d see you again.
I was going to talk to you last time but I chickened out.
YOU chickened out?
Pretty silly, right?
No, obviously I’m the same way.
I get nervous easily.
Why would a girl like you ever be nervous?
You’re pretty, you’re funny, you buy the fancy detergent…
Which is currently in my hair.
I got you.
Matt brushes the soap from Cara’s hair.
She feels her heart beat faster.
I…I think there’s some on you too.
Matt and Cara’s faces draw closer…
Oh yeah? Where?
Right…about…
Cara softly presses her lips onto his.
After an endless moment, she pulls away.
Did you get it?
Should I double-check?
Double check…triple check…
Do what you gotta do.
And she does.
