Major Magic - Episode 1
by Kayla Parent
I am obsessed with Seth Major.
He’s a super famous, super talented musician…
And today, I’m interviewing to be his personal assistant.
I’ve been preparing for days…
So when I pick up his manager’s FaceTime call…
I feel completely and totally ready.
Hi Janet—
I cut off on a gasp.
Because it’s not Janet staring back at me.
It’s SETH!
I jump out of my chair and nearly drop my phone.
HOLY CRAP!
YOU’RE…YOU’RE…SETH MAJOR!
Seth gives me a small smile.
Last time I checked.
My eyes devour the image of his perfect face.
Shock and awe have my pulse beating a mile a minute.
B-but why are you calling me?!
He gives me a strange look.
Because you’re interviewing to be my assistant?
Yes, but I thought I’d be talking to Janet!
I told Janet I thought it would be best if I talked to you myself.
We’d be spending a lot of time together, after all.
I put my hand on my heart.
My chest is heaving.
He watches me with a wary look.
Is this going to be a problem?
I suck in a deep breath.
Forcing myself to get it together.
No! Not at all!
I just wasn’t expecting you.
I mean, I would have worn something different!
His face scrunches with confusion.
Why?
Realizing what I said…
I wave his words away.
Never mind.
Sorry, let’s get started.
After a moment, he nods.
Okay, so as I’m sure you’ve already heard from Janet…
There are three main things I need in an assistant.
Yes! I know this!
I’ve prepared for this!
Right.
Your life is hectic and so is your schedule.
So you need someone who’s adaptable.
Someone prepared for every situation.
I say it with a smile…
But it quickly fades.
By freaking out at his surprise call…
I basically did the opposite of that.
I can see in his eyes he’s thinking the same thing.
Um, believe it or not…
I’m actually very adaptable.
Seth doesn’t look convinced.
Can you give me an example?
Of course.
At my last job, I was the executive assistant for a CEO.
He traveled a lot, and one time, his plans changed last minute.
I had an hour to change a two-week trip to China…
To a three-week stay in London.
Let me guess, you did it in an hour?
I had everything ready in exactly 33 minutes.
Seth laughs…
And I inwardly cheer.
Impressive.
So what company was this?
Sound Bite Recordings.
Seth frowns.
That company is infamously known for stealing music.
The people who work there are crooks.
My heart sinks.
I only found that out after I left.
At the time, I had no idea what was going on.
Seth nods, but he’s still frowning.
Great, now I seem inattentive, like I don’t pay attention to detail.
UGH! I have to save this!
Um so, the next thing you’re looking for is a good multi-tasker.
And that’s totally me.
In fact, I’d even call myself a super-tasker!
Seth tilts his head and smiles.
A super-tasker? What’s that?
It means I actually perform BETTER when I have multiple things going on.
A super-tasker—
At that moment…
A lawnmower starts outside.
Seth raises his eyebrows — he can obviously hear it.
Erm, sorry about that.
Let me just close the window.
I stand and hold up my phone…
Then head for the window.
But I’m so distracted…
I trip on the carpet.
I fall headfirst, barely managing to catch my phone before it hits the ground.
Panicked, I move back into view.
I’m so sorry!
What?!
Oh yeah — he can’t hear over the lawnmower.
I’M SO SORRY!
GIVE ME A SECOND!
I put the phone down and run over to the window.
I quickly shut it, run back and grab my phone, then head to my desk.
I lean my phone against my laptop, then go to sit down.
But in my haste…
My butt misses the chair by a mile…
And I land on the floor…hard.
OUCH!
I groan, then grab the chair and hoist myself up.
When I get my bearings and look back at the screen…
Seth is staring at me like I’m insane.
Are you okay?
I’m fine!
Sorry about that.
What were we talking about?
Seth clears his throat.
Multi-tasking.
I close my eyes, and let out a breath.
Strike two for me.
I swear I’m usually not that clumsy.
To my surprise, he laughs.
Hey, it happens to the best of us.
I fell down the stairs during that New York show.
I give him a small smile.
I actually remember that.
But the show was really amazing.
You saw it?
I was there.
That Open E chord progression on your song "Fly Away" was phenomenal.
You took a risk, and it definitely paid off.
Seth’s eyes light up.
Hey — you know your stuff.
That’s cool.
Yeah, I play a little bit.
In fact, I have a few songs.
Yeah?
Yeah, I’ve put together a whole album, actually.
I’ve been working on E chord myself…
My words trail off.
Crap!
Janet specifically told me not to bring this up!
Seth is constantly bombarded by people wanting him to listen to their stuff…
And I don’t want to give him the wrong impression.
I shake my head and regroup.
Anyway…
My phone suddenly beeps with a call.
It’s my mom.
What is she doing calling me?!
She knows I have this interview!
Leslie?
Sorry, just a minute.
I reach out and decline my mom’s call.
But I must press the wrong button…
Because suddenly her face is on the screen.
LESLIE!
How was your interview?!
My jaw drops open.
Mom, hang up!
I didn’t mean to add you—
Oh my god!
SETH MAJOR!
My mom waves like a lunatic at the screen.
Uhh…hello…
Leslie, you should have told me you were adding me to the interview!
I didn’t mean to—
Seth, I am a huge fan.
I just love your music.
I like to listen to it when I’m in the shower.
OH MY GOD.
MOM, HANG UP—
Does this mean you got the job, sweetheart?!
I’M INTERVIEWING NOW!
Ohh I see.
You called me for a personal recommendation.
YOU CALLED ME—
Leslie would be a wonderful assistant, Seth!
She’s your BIGGEST fan.
Seth is smiling.
I’m dying inside.
Is that so?
Mom, please—
She had posters of you plastered all over her room.
She had every concert on tape and would watch them over and over.
She was OBSESSED!
MOM!
She was 16 when you did that spring break show in Cancun.
And when you took off your shirt and threw it into the crowd?
My mom leans in with a sly grin.
Well, let’s just say…
I’m pretty sure that’s the moment she turned into a woman.
Seth’s eyes widen, and his eyes swing to me.
I reach out with shaking fingers…
Trying to get my mom off the call.
It’d be a mistake not to hire her!
She’s—
I finally manage to disconnect her line.
For a few incredibly awkward seconds…
Seth and I just stare at each other.
I can see on the screen that my face is bright red.
I am so sorry, Seth.
That was completely unprofessional.
She was calling me, and I accidentally added her to our call.
He bites his lip, then laughs.
It’s okay.
She reminds me of my mom.
Really?
When I was just starting out…
She insisted on coming to every audition with me.
Every time I got rejected…
She’d wait outside the office, just to yell at the producers.
They are our biggest fans.
I sigh.
I’m lucky he’s being so cool about this.
But there’s no denying this interview is a disaster.
Anyway, let’s get this back on track.
The third thing you’re looking for in an assistant…
When I remember what it is…
My stomach flips.
I can’t get myself to say the words.
But luckily, Seth provides them for me.
No fangirls.
I press my lips together, and nod.
Seth gives me a regretful smile.
I’m going to guess this interview did not go as you planned.
I shake my head.
Not at all.
Pretty much the opposite of what I planned.
Look, you seem like a great person.
But I don’t think you’re the right fit for this position.
I nod, looking down at my lap.
Even though I knew it was coming…
It still hurts.
I understand.
I’m so sorry for wasting your time.
He goes to speak again…
But then looks at his phone.
Can you give me a second?
Of course.
He clicks over to the other line…
And I slam my head against my desk.
I just lost the opportunity of a lifetime!
Stupid, stupid, stupid!
Minutes pass…
And I wonder if he forgot about me.
I should just hang up.
He basically already told me I didn’t get the job.
But I can’t just HANG UP on Seth Major when he asked me to wait.
As more time goes by…
I start to sink further into depression.
I leave my phone on my desk…
Flop down on my bed, and start humming a tune.
Singing has always been my comfort when I’m down…
So I start belting out my original song called "Move Forward."
Because if there’s anything I need to do right now…
It’s that.
I get so lost in the lyrics…
That I almost don’t hear the clapping.
For a second, I wonder where it’s coming from…
But then I remember.
Oh my god!
Seth!
I rush back to my desk.
Seth is back on screen, and he’s grinning ear to ear.
Holy crap!
You’ve got a killer voice!
I sit down, half in a daze.
You weren’t supposed to hear that.
I thought you were on the other line.
He ignores that, leaning further into the phone.
So you’re a guitarist, a singer, AND a songwriter?
I blink quickly.
I…yes.
In my spare time.
I do shows at local clubs and stuff.
Nothing special—
Send me your stuff.
I want to hear more.
I rear back.
Wait, seriously?!
You want to listen to my songs?
Definitely.
I’m pretty blown away over here.
Your voice is…gorgeous.
He gazes at me, as if seeing me for the first time.
The intensity of his stare sends a delicious tingle up my spine.
Wow, thank you.
You have no idea how much that would mean to me.
It’s not every day I come across a voice like yours…
It sounded almost…magical.
That tingle runs up my spine again…
Geez, talk about magic.
Seth and I share an intimate smile.
He scans my face, and bites his lip…
And something passes through the airwaves between us.
Seth shakes his head, as if waking himself from a stupor.
Okay, I’m texting you my email now.
Wait, does this mean you’re going to reconsider me for the assistant position?
He laughs and gives me a smile.
Sorry, but no.
It’s okay—
But I am looking for an opening act for my next tour.
Someone fresh and new that I can showcase…
And I think you might just fit the bill.
I gasp, and nearly fall off my chair again.
ARE YOU JOKING?!
Seth throws his head back and laughs.
I’m serious!
Um, oh my god, OKAY.
Sending it over now!
Never in my wildest dreams…
Did I think anything would ever come of my music.
I might not have gotten the assistant job…
But looks like I might be able to live my dream anyway.
