Mystery Ninja
by Craig Pearson
Hi Veronica, we hope you enjoyed the concert. Charlie was glad you could come, he’s a big fan of your Youtube covers.
This has seriously been the best night of my life. THANK YOU for the tickets!
If you want to meet him, he’s in his trailer now. We’ve got an hour before we hit the road.
Wait, for real? Of course I want to meet him!
Where do I go?
Out back, behind the stage. South parking lot. Red tour bus is Charlie’s.
Okay, thank you! I’m walking that way now. I can just show this VIP pass, right?
Yep.
I feel like I’ve been waiting for this night my whole life haha.
Do I knock or what? The red bus is dark and no one’s answering.
I’ll text Charlie.
I’m getting soaked out here, it’s really raining. But I think I can hear music through the door?
He’s not writing back.
Wait it’s open.
WTF
wtf Dom I think he’s dead.
He’s hanging by a microphone cord tied to the ceiling fan.
What?
Somebody killed Charlie.
And the fan’s still on and he’s spinning really slow, and his face is blue, his eyes are open… omg wtf is happening.
Veronica, calm down.
Stay where you are. I’m coming to get you.
And there’s a song playing from the speakers… it’s just the chorus from “Ninja,” skipping and repeating over and over.
“Didn’t see me coming, did ya? Baby that’s cause I’m a ninja.”
You’re not making any sense.
Listen, don’t call the police or anything, I’m on my way.
I don’t want to stay here. What if this psycho killer person is still in the trailer?
It doesn’t matter. They’re not after you
How do you know?
We got a threat before the concert.
It was an email that said the band members would be dropping one by one before we knew what hit us.
So if this is real, they’ve probably already gone looking for their next victim.
WTF why didn’t you cancel the concert?
We get threats all the time, you can’t take them too seriously.
If we cancelled the show every time we got a suspicious email, we’d never make any money. And that’s my job.
I’m outside now, I can barely see through the rain. Can you turn the headlights on?
Veronica? You’d better not be messing around with me.
I’m in the trailer, where are you?
I was too scared. I couldn’t stay there.
You didn’t tell me somebody pulled all his teeth out.
Yeah he was bleeding out of his mouth, it was awful.
Tell me where you are.
I’m backstage. I’m going through the dressing rooms.
You trying to get yourself killed?
I’m following a trail of bloody teeth.
What for?
I’m taking pictures with my phone. It’s evidence.
Listen, Veronica, you remember what you signed when we gave you those tickets.
Any photos you take backstage are our property. You can’t send them to anyone. You understand?
If this stuff gets released to the media…
I’ll send them to the police not TMZ.
You’re freaking me out, Dom, why aren’t you more concerned that there’s a KILLER somewhere backstage?
Just don’t send anything to anyone.
This is a multimillion dollar world tour I’m trying to manage here. When this story breaks, we need to break it right.
There’s way too many teeth here for just one body.
OMG
What? Did you find something?
It’s an ear.
Where?
Charlie’s dressing room.
I can’t take this anymore.
I’m coming to find you.
Just stay where you are and keep quiet.
WHOSE EAR IS THIS, DOM?
It doesn’t matter, just wait for me.
I don’t want to die.
I can hear someone in the corridor.
Turn out the lights.
Okay okay. All I can see is my own shadow on the wall.
And the light from under the door.
I’m in the building, I’m coming for you.
They’re on the other side. I can hear them humming.
Stay put.
They’re humming that song, the same song.
Don’t make a sound.
I remember when I first heard that song.
Do you remember, Dom?
I don’t know what you’re talking about.
It was like three years ago. I was in my bedroom in the dark, just like now.
I’m approaching Charlie’s dressing room. I don’t see anybody outside the door.
And I was sitting there and I thought of this little chorus of a song about a ninja, somebody who steals your heart before you know what hit you.
And I wrote the words down. And I recorded a video.
What are you saying?
And then some time went by, and when I heard the song again, it was on the radio.
Only it was Charlie singing.
I know for a fact Charlie wrote that song himself. He sent me the voice memo.
Charlie stole my song. And you made it a hit.
Veronica, I’m at the door. Open up. We can talk about this.
Open it yourself.
Are you still in here?
If you’re hiding in the bathroom, come out.
All I see is this ear in the middle of the floor, circled with bloody teeth.
Listen. Get closer and listen.
Veronica, where are you?
Do you hear the song?
Don’t do this. Whatever you’re thinking, just please let it go.
I’ve been waiting for this night for a long time.
You can hear it, can’t you? I can see you standing there listening.
I don’t see you.
No. And you never will.
