Off Limits - Episode 2
by Brandi Reeds
It’s three in the morning.
Jacey prepares to leave Ty’s downtown Chicago apartment.
You have the most amazing collection of underwear.
It’s one of the perks of working at a lingerie company.
Speaking of which, where is my bra?
Ty pulls Jacey back to bed.
He kisses her and palms a breast.
She melts with his touch.
He hooks a leg around hers.
Their feet brush.
God, you’re good at this.
WE are good at this.
But I have to go.
Jacey attempts to get out of bed again.
Ty grips her hand.
Oh, no you don’t.
Kim and I are meeting at the spa in — oh my god — five hours.
I can’t go to the Peninsula in last night’s dress.
So reschedule.
Um, hello? It’s the PENINSULA.
You don’t cancel at the Peninsula.
Next time, bring what you need for the morning.
We’re really going to do this? Spend an entire night together?
I can’t miss spa day. It took a month to get an appointment.
Just a few more minutes.
We can’t keep doing this. Absolutely, this is the last time.
Hmmm. No deal.
This was nice.
It was.
He kisses her.
I think you’re great.
Said every guy before he put his clothes back on.
The day I met you, you’d just pitched an idea at work—
I remember: The plaid satin stay-put hipster panty.
Right! And your boss loved it.
He did say it was brilliant.
You’re creative and insightful.
And you never stop pushing for the next horizon.
Do you know how sexy that is?
Just doing my job.
You don’t know how amazing you are.
If we were together, I’d be sure you never forgot it.
I already told you. I can’t break the pact.
Oh good. We’re going to talk about the pact again.
Kim looks out for me, and I look out for her. It’s what the pact is all about.
Maybe the pact is standing in the way of something great.
We could be pretty amazing, you and me.
Jacey pulls away and again searches for her clothes.
She finally finds her bra.
Aha!
Ty grabs her hand.
The more time I spend with you, the more sure I am.
Please. Take a chance on us.
Look, Ty. I like you.
But Kim means a lot to me, and this would absolutely crush her.
What if we talk to her? Maybe you can make an exception.
I can’t risk it.
Kim and her family…they’re all I have.
They came through for me when I had nowhere to go.
My dad disappeared to California when I was ten.
When Mom got her diagnosis.
Your dad left? Right when your Mom got sick?
Yes. And Kim’s family saved me.
I could’ve ended up in a group home if it hadn’t been for them.
So if Kim’s a little overprotective of me, okay, SOMEONE should be.
Wait. You haven’t seen your dad in—
A long time, yeah.
Whatever. I mean, he tried for a couple of months.
But eventually he stopped calling after she died.
He didn’t even come for her funeral.
I can’t imagine how devastating that must have been.
Well, I managed to get by without him.
He’s your DAD. And after losing your mom like that—
Don’t feel sorry for me.
I don’t pity you. I’m in awe of you! You were a kid.
Jacey makes a move to get up from the bed.
I should go.
Stop.
We’re just talking, right?
I don’t want to talk about THIS.
Fine. We can talk about anything you want.
Let’s talk about you. How’s work?
Ty groans.
It’s going that well, huh?
It’s all right.
But do you ever feel like we get stuck in these tiny corners of the world?
There’s so much out there, but it’s comfortable, and safe so we stay there?
Such is life in the world of corporate marketing.
Jacey cuddles at Ty’s side.
If you could be anything, what would it be?
You mean besides your boyfriend?
I mean any profession in the world.
I like what I do. I just sometimes wish I did it for ME. Instead of The Man.
I know what you mean. I’d love to have my own collection.
I’d call it Styles by Jacey.
Why don’t you?
I have a few pieces designed — jackets, fun tops — but who’d look at them?
I work for an UNDERWEAR company.
Just once, I’d like to design something people could see other people wearing on the street.
Ty laughs.
Seriously, about your dad.
I’m sorry you had to go through that.
Eh…he was a heavy drinker. He might’ve done more damage if he’d stayed.
You see what I mean?
You’re strong. Look what you’ve overcome.
God, the more I learn about you…Girl, that’s sexy as hell.
If you think having a screwed up past is sexy…
Ty leans over her and kisses her.
SURVIVING is sexy.
OPTIMISM is sexy.
Your faith in the world, when it’s done its damnedest to let you down…
Your laugh…Your mouth, your eyes, your little toe…
You.
He kisses her.
Are.
He kisses her again.
Sexy.
Another round before the sun comes up?
Since it’s our last time—
Debatable.
—We can have at least one more round.
Jacey awakens at 7:42 a.m. to a text alert and checks her phone.
Kim has texted her four times.
Jacey suddenly breaks the morning silence.
Fuck!
Ty jolts awake and rubs his eyes.
What happened?
I’m late! I have to get home to change, and by the time I get to the spa…
God, she’s going to be pissed.
What — she’s never overslept before?
Jacey starts frantically dressing.
I can’t believe I did this.
It’s not that big of a deal.
Right. Just like the fire escape wasn’t that big of a deal.
Like last night wasn’t that big of a deal.
Some things are pretty important to some of us, Ty.
Relax.
This was a colossal mistake.
This — what we’re doing — it just isn’t me. I can’t.
Breathe, baby. Breathe.
Jacey sits back down on the bed.
With her head in her hands, she tries to catch her breath.
Kim’s a big girl. She can get her toes done without you.
I need to meet her.
But she’s going to ask questions I won’t be able to answer.
So don’t answer.
Jacey’s phone pings an alert again.
She checks it as Ty attempts to hold her attention.
Did you have a good time last night?
Do you want to see me again?
Jacey texts Kim.
Running late. On my way.
Ty reaches for Jacey’s hand.
Tonight, maybe? A real date?
I don’t think so.
You can’t tell me you don’t want this.
What I want and what I’m willing to do…those are two different things.
Wait, Jacey.
I can’t do this.
Goodbye, Ty.
