Off Limits - Episode 5
by Brandi Reeds
Jacey is walking into The Drake Hotel to meet Kim and Kim’s mother, Alice, for brunch.
She is five minutes late.
She repeats a single sentence in her head as she passes through the revolving door:
I’m going to tell her today about Ty.
I’m going to tell her today about Ty.
She approaches the table where Kim and Alice are already sitting.
Hi! Sorry I’m late.
We ordered you a mimosa.
I brought brochures. I’m thinking for our winter getaway: Spain!
Hell yeah. I’m in.
Spain? What does Spain cost?
Now don’t even start. Dad and I are going to foot the bill. Per usual.
She’s not worried about the money.
After all, she was promoted after the plaid-satin-hipster-panty launch.
There’s a different reason she doesn’t want to go.
She’s thinking that Spain is awfully far away from her new boyfriend.
Boyfriend?
Jacey turns to Kim.
Can we talk about this after brunch?
I know you met him yesterday.
How do you know that?
Um…hello?
I KNOW you, all right?
When you don’t reply to texts for hours, you’re busy.
And when a girl’s busy on a Saturday night…
What’s his name?
Where’d he take you? The beach?
You ARE sporting a tan, young lady.
I was outside all day.
With him? Doing what?
Tanning, apparently.
Well, do tell.
Here’s what we know so far. His code name is Hercules.
Impressive.
Every time he contacts her, she gets this silly smile on her face.
I do not.
You try to hide it.
When do Dad and I get to meet him?
I don’t know.
She said she broke up with him.
Yesterday we sort of…didn’t break up.
How long have you been together?
Not long.
How long have known him?
A few months. Six, give or take.
Where’d you meet him?
Um…at a bar.
You’re right, Kimmy. She’s blushing. Must be Hercules.
Maybe this year, the two of you should bring dates on our trip.
Hypothetically, if bringing guys we’ve only just begun to date on a winter getaway is actually an option—
Which it isn’t—
You could bring Russ.
Kim rolls her eyes.
I’d be better off finding a date in Barcelona, thank you very much.
Oh, no. Not going so well with Russ?
A shame. He does quite well for himself.
And he’s a good-looking guy.
He’s a metrosexual for sure. But I prefer rugged.
Besides, he’s so regimented and has zero sense of humor.
I need to laugh, you know?
And you have your own money, and the power to earn more.
No need to rely on a man for that.
That’s right. From now on, I’m looking for funny and ruggedly handsome.
Well, it’s months away. We have time to decide.
By then, you could be two boyfriends past this Russ.
Actually…I called someone yesterday.
An ex. Do you remember Ty?
You called him?
I can’t keep up. Who’s Ty?
He looks like a lumberjack. Works in marketing.
Oh, right! I liked him.
I just think lately…I broke it off with him partly because I thought I had feelings for someone else, and it wasn’t fair to him.
But it never panned out with that other guy.
Ty and I were both preoccupied with other things at the time.
I’m thinking I’ll feel him out.
See if he might be interested in trying again.
Do it. He’d be crazy not to give you a second chance.
Have you met this guy, Jacey?
Yeah.
Jacey swallows hard.
Yeah, I have. Ty’s a great guy.
Oh give me a break.
What? I like Ty.
Think about it. When we were dating, you rarely tagged along.
And when you did and he’d try to talk to you, you wouldn’t engage.
Let’s face it. You were less than supportive of me reaching out to him again.
I think Ty is great. It’s just that—
Just think of it! Kim and Ty. Jacey and her Hercules. In Spain.
We’re getting ahead of ourselves.
What man wouldn’t want to take a chance on a beautiful girl with all expenses paid to Spain?
I’ll text Ty.
You’re going to invite him on vacation over text?
Why not?
Because you broke up.
And you have a boyfriend.
Probably not for long.
I’m just putting some feelers out there.
Jacey, tell us more about Hercules.
I think it’s just about over.
Not if you saw him yesterday.
There’s someone in the way.
On your side or his?
It’s complicated.
No girl could possibly be more important than you.
I think this girl is pretty important, actually.
Let me meet him.
I’ll help him see what a catch you are.
And what a loser this other girl is, compared to you.
I’m not sure you could do that.
Are you kidding? I’m your biggest fan.
And if this guy doesn’t choose you, he’s probably not worth it anyway.
