Off Limits - Episode 6
by Brandi Reeds
It’s late in the evening after brunch.
Ty and Jacey are in Ty’s bed, naked.
The windows are open, and the sounds of the city rise up from the street below.
I’m glad you came.
Pun intended.
We’re so good at this.
We are, aren’t we?
But I need to stay focused.
Like I said, I came here to break up with you.
If this is breaking up, let’s do it twice a day.
I’m serious. Kim—
I thought you decided to come clean with Kim.
I was going to. At brunch with Alice.
What happened?
Kim can’t stop thinking about you, that’s what.
We have no choice. We have to stop.
There’s always a choice.
And she’s choosing you.
So? I’m choosing YOU.
She has her heart set on taking you to Europe.
What?
Every year around Valentine’s Day, Kim’s parents take us on a winter getaway.
This year, we’re going to Spain, and Alice suggested we bring dates.
So Kim started talking about this guy I was dating — code name: Hercules.
Hercules?
That’s my name for you on my phone.
I’m honored.
And Alice thought it would be great if Kim could reconnect with you.
She doesn’t know you and Hercules are the same person!
Wow. I’m Hercules.
You’re focusing on the wrong details.
Kim’s sure now: she wants you back.
She even said she texted and called you last night.
She did, but I didn’t answer the text or take the call.
Yesterday, at the winery, was amazing.
But if you had been there, at brunch, you’d understand.
They’re my FAMILY.
If I have children someday, Kim’s going to be their only auntie.
Not true. I have a sister.
Jacey rolls her eyes.
Nice attempt at diverting.
So…you’re just going to turn your back on this? On us?
Jacey starts getting dressed.
We never should’ve started this in the first place.
I would have gone with you to meet her.
You didn’t have to tell her alone.
God, you don’t get it.
Every time I see you, I think: I’m not going to do this again.
And every time, I end up in bed with you, regardless.
I feel out of control when it comes to you.
You aren’t alone anymore.
If I’m not careful, I’ll be as alone as I’ve ever been.
I’ll go with you.
We’ll tell Kim we didn’t plan on anything happening between us.
That it just sort of spontaneously combusted.
That we would never deliberately hurt her.
And honestly, I can’t imagine she’ll be hurt anyway.
She’ll understand. She will.
I can’t risk it. I’m done.
Jesus, Jacey. Stand up for yourself. Stand up for us!
There you go again. Assuming I’m a doormat.
That is NOT what I’m saying.
You know, I don’t like the way you think of me.
Dammit, Jacey.
Ty runs his hands through his hair.
What do you mean?
You think I just lay down and let everyone tell me how it is.
That I just let people walk all over me.
I think you’re crazy!
Thank you.
But then again, I’M also crazy.
About you.
And we’ve got something good going, here.
We’re the real deal.
You can’t possibly know that already.
Yes. I can.
It’s been ten days.
And they’ve been great, believe me, but—
Try INCREDIBLE.
Still.
I’d been making love to you in my mind since the day I first saw you.
So maybe you see this as ten days.
But I see it as half a year of foreplay leading up to the sexiest scene to occur on a fire escape. Ever.
I’ve never felt this way before.
I’m not going anywhere, pretty lady.
That’s what you say now.
Eventually, you all leave.
Ty shoves a leg into his jeans.
Thanks for the confidence.
You know, I’m not just any old guy.
No, you’re a guy my best friend used to date.
Let’s just talk to her, all right?
You don’t know her like I do. She won’t understand.
She’ll be furious with me.
If she’s furious with you for falling for me—
I never should have fallen for you in the first place.
—Then she’s not much of a friend.
She shared her bedroom, her wardrobe…
Hell, she shared her PARENTS with me when I had nothing!
Then why wouldn’t she want you to be happy?
You don’t understand.
It’s about loyalty, and protecting our friendship.
You’re just off limits, okay?
Kim’s a good judge of character.
I like everyone. I’m too trusting.
And every time she’s told me to be on the lookout, I’ve dodged a bullet.
This is over, Ty. We’re done.
I will fight for this, Jacey. Believe me I will fight.
Then you’ll only be beating yourself up.
Listen to me.
Ty cups Jacey’s face in his hands.
Tell me you’re not crazy about me, too.
Through tears, Jacey stares up at him, and kisses the palm of his hand.
Ty.
She sighs.
