Off Limits - Episode 7
by Brandi Reeds
It’s Monday evening.
Kim is waiting for Jacey at the Frayed Knot.
She texts someone else while she’s waiting.
Are you free?
Frayed Knot. Ten minutes.
Jacey is on her way.
Must talk.
Jacey walks in and kisses Kim on the cheek.
Who are you texting?
Not Russ.
Kim looks up from her phone.
She sees that Jacey’s been crying.
Honey, what’s wrong?
It’d be easier to tell you what’s NOT wrong.
Rough day?
The worst.
I officially broke up with Hercules last night. For good this time.
Kim slides a whiskey and diet to Jacey.
Misery loves company.
Why? What happened to you?
Oh, it’s embarrassing.
I was going to contact Ty, right? Invite him to Spain?
Well, when he didn’t answer, or call me back, I asked Russ instead.
And he turned me down.
Even though it was all expenses paid.
One of the best golf courses on the planet — and this guy loves to golf.
And he said no.
Apparently, he just wasn’t that into me.
Maybe he was uncomfortable with the whole family trip angle.
No. It gets worse.
After he refused the trip…he broke up with me.
Said I was too cranky for him.
You’re not cranky. You’re bitter. And bitterness works for you.
He’s a stick in the mud, and HE broke up with ME.
He beat you to the punch. You were going to end it anyway.
It still sucks, but…
Aren’t we a pair? Shitty all around.
Jacey raises her glass.
To things looking up.
Kim nods toward the door.
Things already are.
Jacey looks over her shoulder and sees Ty entering the pub.
What’s HE doing here?
You’re going to think I’m crazy, but I texted him to meet us.
I know you’re not wild about him.
But he’s the most decent guy either of us has dated in at least a year and a half.
I have to try.
Kim, no.
Shh…pretend we’re talking about something else.
Maybe I should give you some privacy.
I need you here.
I don’t want to be here.
Be nice.
Ty approaches.
Kim. Jacey.
Hi.
Kim leans in and kisses Ty’s cheek.
Ty steps back.
You look great.
Jacey speaks into her whiskey.
As always.
I’m a little confused.
I thought I was here to talk about—
You don’t mind if Jacey’s here, do you?
I always put my girl first, and she’s had a rough couple of days.
Is that right?
They have been difficult.
The past twenty-four hours haven’t been so great for me.
They started with a bang yesterday evening. But then they fizzled quickly.
Would you believe I had a foot in the door with this amazing new opportunity?
And it turns out the person in charge got cold feet and decided not to pursue it.
Maybe it wasn’t the right time.
This girl I’ve been seeing suggested the same thing.
Kim chases her ice with her straw.
You’re seeing someone?
I am, but I’m not sure how to define our relationship at the moment.
She’s not very smart, if she let you out alone looking the way you do.
Actually, she’s brilliant.
I’d say that’s up for debate. Obviously.
Jacey motions to the bartender.
Could I have another whiskey please?
How long have you been seeing her?
Ty looks at Jacey.
Not too long, actually.
So it’s a new relationship.
More of a quality versus quantity thing.
Lucky girl.
I like to think I’m the lucky one.
Sounds serious.
I thought it was, but maybe it isn’t.
Jacey looks over at Kim.
You don’t have to interrogate him. He’s obviously—
No, I don’t mind. I like talking about her.
She’s stronger than she realizes.
And so inspiring.
It’s like…if this girl puts her mind to something, you just know she’s going to accomplish it.
Jacey discreetly catches a tear on a knuckle.
You seem pretty hooked on her.
Kim puts on a flirty pout.
And to think I called you here to get you back.
I almost believed you for a second. Kim. Always the joker.
No really. That’s why I called you.
But you seem happy. He seems different, am I right, Jace?
Maybe you should call this girl and figure things out before it’s too late.
Hmm. Maybe I should.
I don’t think—
Go ahead. Give her a call.
Ty reaches into his pocket for his phone and begins to dial.
Jacey’s not ready for this.
She grabs her phone and gets ready to bolt.
I’ll be right back.
Kim puts her hand on Jacey’s arm.
Wait! Don’t you want to see what happens?
Jacey’s phone starts ringing.
Ty grins.
It’s ringing.
Kim looks from Jacey to Ty.
Comprehension starts dawning across her face.
Jacey swallows a lump in her throat.
What’s going on? Jace?
She takes Jacey’s phone out her hand and sees the caller ID:
Hercules.
Jacey closes her eyes and sighs.
How could you?
Ty terminates the call.
Wow. I guess I misread that one.
I thought Jacey told you about us—
Jacey.
—and I thought you texted and asked me to meet you guys here so we could work it out.
Kim looks at Jacey.
You broke the pact.
I never meant—
No, no, no. This can’t be happening.
Is Ty…? He’s the guy?
I can’t believe this.
When Chaz asked me out, I said no.
Chaz is the hottest guy I’ve ever seen in my life, and I said no out of obligation to you.
I said no because I honored our pact.
And this amazing guy you’ve been seeing behind my back…it’s Ty?
Otherwise known as Hercules. Nice to meet you.
