Off Limits - Episode 8
by Brandi Reeds
Jacey. Why didn’t you tell me?
Because I knew you’d react this way.
No, it’s because you knew you were doing something wrong.
Hey, she didn’t do anything wrong.
Kim glares at Ty.
You! You just ruined a lifelong friendship.
Think of that when you’re breaking her heart in two weeks because some other skirt catches your eye.
Kim looks at Jacey.
That’s what made it so easy to dump him.
You know how you can tell when a guy’s with you, but thinking of someone else?
I was thinking of Jacey.
This guy’s mind was NEVER on me.
Kim, you had feelings for someone else at the time!
Only because Ty was never really present.
Both girls look at Ty.
I’m sorry about that, Kim.
But when I met you both, Jacey caught my eye first.
If I seemed preoccupied, it was because of her.
And I never meant to hurt either one of you.
We didn’t plan this. It just sort of happened.
And I broke up with him, remember?
I dumped the greatest guy either of us has ever dated — your words, not mine — to make you happy.
Obviously, NONE of this is about ME.
Kim, listen.
Kim, we had a great few months, but you sure as hell never felt strongly about me.
This isn’t some cheap fling. I’m IN LOVE with Jacey.
Wait.
And I can’t let her walk away over some technicality you two put in place when you were teenagers.
Jacey slides off her barstool and gravitates toward Ty.
You’re in love with me?
I love you, Jacey. I know it’s fast, but nothing’s ever felt so right.
I think I love you, too.
Well then.
She forces a smile and backs toward the door
I wish you both the best.
Kim, wait.
No. No, I can’t, Jacey. I can’t be part of this, okay?
Kim leaves the Frayed Knot.
And Jacey folds herself into Ty’s arms.
She hates me.
We’ll work it out, Jacey.
We’re worth it. I promise.
One week later, Ty and Jacey are back at Ty’s place.
They’ve made things official, having changed statuses on social media.
But Jacey isn’t happy because her friendship with Kim is over.
Jacey has been texting Kim every day, but Kim hasn’t responded.
Jacey tries again today.
Can we please talk?
This is the most amazing thing that’s ever happened to me.
But it isn’t the same without you.
It’s not that you wanted to be with Ty.
It’s that you did it behind my back.
If I’d asked your permission to date him, what would you have said?
I guess we’ll never know.
Please.
I’m sorry.
Let’s talk about this.
Please.
Jacey stares at her phone for a long time.
But she doesn’t hear back from Kim again.
Ty sits on the other end of the sofa, pulls her feet into his lap, and begins to rub her feet.
She’s not responding anymore.
Stop texting, and please stop apologizing to her.
But I need this resolved.
You’ve done all you can do.
You don’t understand.
I do, actually.
I’ve been on the other end of Kim’s silent treatment.
I know how she works.
Time will heal.
But until she’s ready, we should enjoy this, Jacey.
Do you know how difficult it is to find someone you’re crazy about?
And what the odds are of that person being crazy about you?
But we did it. We found each other.
It’s supposed to be magical right now.
And we can’t enjoy it because you’re obsessed with getting Kim’s approval.
I’m not obsessed. I’m determined.
Fine. Either way, she doesn’t approve of us.
And I need her to approve of us.
No. You don’t.
We can’t make that happen. That’s a decision she has to make for herself.
I need her to be happy for me.
I think she is. She just can’t show it right now.
She’s embarrassed. She was hitting on me.
I’m going to try texting Alice.
Stop texting.
Jacey ignores Ty’s advice and texts Kim’s mom.
Still on for brunch tomorrow?
O’Reilly’s? Ten?
Why don’t we just skip it this week.
Kim’s hurt.
I don’t think it’s a good idea.
I want to work this out.
In time, this may pass.
But until she’s ready, it’s best if you give her space.
But you’re the only mom I have.
I feel totally alone without you and Kim.
Please, let’s meet for brunch and work this out.
Can you meet me later?
To talk?
There’s no response.
Mom?
No still no response.
Jacey bursts into tears.
Then she turns to Ty.
Now Alice isn’t talking to me, either.
Ty pulls her into his arms.
Give this time, Jacey.
I promise you, it’ll work itself out, but Kim needs time.
I expected Alice to still think of me as her daughter.
For half my life, she’s been the only mom I have.
And suddenly, I don’t have a family.
You have me.
And you’ll have my family.
I’ve never been good at relationships.
Finally, I think I’ve got it right, and they aren’t here to share it with me.
But I’m here. We’re together.
Please tell me you’re happy about it, regardless of whether or not Kim gives us her blessing.
I don’t know how to be happy if she’s not.
Then we’ve got bigger problems.
It’s been a week, Jacey, and all this drama about the pact…it’s ridiculous.
She wasn’t even into me.
The whole time we were dating, she was texting with this other guy.
This real GQ type. Tall. Blonde. Smug.
Jacey starts scrolling on her phone.
Wait.
They even had lunch a few times.
If you’re going to abide by a pact, put some parameters around it.
Like the guy has to mean something to you in order to qualify.
Jacey shows Ty a profile picture from social media.
THIS guy?
Yeah. Chaz Markham. That’s him.
Jacey texts Kim.
You and Chaz?
Kim immediately calls.
Jacey declines the call.
