Peter's Planner - Episode 1
by Eric Levin
Ugh, Becky, I lost my planner!
What do you mean?
I was at the coffee shop…
And this guy spilled his drink right next to me.
Ooo a guy??
Focus, Becky.
Oh come on. Was he cute?
I mean…
He was pretty hot.
But so clumsy.
🙄
Anyway I grabbed my planner before it got soaked…
But he must’ve had one too.
So we swapped by mistake 😩
Can you find him?
He left a few minutes ago…
I’m scanning the block, but he’s gone.
Can’t you just store plans in your head like a normal person?
😑 my whole schedule was in there…
That planner was my LIFE.
But you still have his, right?
I can’t use clumsy man’s planner, Becky.
NO dumb-dumb…
But you can FIND him.
Debbie’s face lights up with recognition.
She flips through the clumsy man’s planner.
Okay so his name’s Peter…
But he doesn’t have his contact info.
Maybe he’ll contact you instead.
…I don’t have my contact info in my planner either 😳
Sounds like you’re screwed 🤷‍♀️
OMG I got it!!
What?
I can use his upcoming events!
Debbie flips to today’s schedule.
He’s got a book club at 1pm.
That’s in 5 minutes!
Where is it?
If he’s like me, he’ll name it on the first entry.
Debbie flips to an earlier page and finds it.
The place is called Paperback Patio!
She punches the name in her phone for a search.
She pulls up the bookstore.
It’s right down the street!
Are you seriously going?
Duh. It’s in his planner!
I just hope he’s taking care of mine 😢
Glad you have your priorities straight 🙄
Good luck!
Debbie runs down the street.
5 minutes later
Debbie enters the book store and finds the club meeting.
She scans for Peter, but he’s nowhere to be found.
The other members start to stare…
Debbie clears her throat.
Excuse me…
Did Peter come in today?
They shake their heads “no.”
Debbie’s phone buzzes.
Well?
He’s not here!
Who schedules a book club and doesn’t show?
The kind who spills their coffee?
Debbie is fuming.
This isn’t how she wants to spend her Saturday.
Of course, she doesn’t remember how she’d hoped to spend Saturday.
That would be in her planner.
Suddenly, the club’s book-of-the-month catches her eye…
It’s a mystery novel.
Debbie used to love mystery novels.
Back before she was drowning in work and bought her planner.
She feels a pang of nostalgia.
You know, I always wanted to join a book club.
Really? Why?
It just seems so quaint…
Funny. He didn’t seem that literary.
Looks can be deceiving.
Debbie turns back to Peter’s planner.
He has a trip to the Whitney in an hour.
You love the Whitney!
Yeah but I haven’t been in ages.
I bet he’s there.
I can feel it!
Debbie hurries out of the bookstore.
1 hour later
Debbie stands outside the Whitney, pacing.
He didn’t show.
This is unbelievable.
I missed my cooking class for this.
I’m surprised you remembered you even had a cooking class…
Without your handy planner.
Funny.
You know how cooking relaxes me.
You’ll catch him at the next place.
Debbie flips back to today’s schedule.
OMG.
What?
He’s going to Metal Lords tonight!
Metal Lords?
You mean that AWFUL metal band?
That I LOVE and am also seeing?
Yes.
Ugh, how do you stand them?
The point is we both have tickets!
And they weren’t cheap…
No way he’ll bail on this.
I’m getting my planner TONIGHT.
Later that night
Debbie waits by the venue’s entrance…
And suddenly sees Peter strolling toward her.
He’s holding her matching planner.
In his infamous clumsiness, he trips—
Then steadies himself with a sheepish grin.
She notices his coffee-stained shoes.
She actually finds the whole picture quite charming.
Fancy meeting you here…
I think this is yours.
He holds out her planner and they swap.
Debbie can hardly contain her relief.
I looked everywhere for you today!
I can say the same thing…
That Singin’ in the Rain anniversary show…
Where were you?
Crap. I forgot all about that!
It was fun. You have good taste.
Then there’s your 4:00pm cooking class…
Debbie’s face flushes.
You didn’t really go to my cooking class, did you?
Not only DID I go…
But I made a wonderful Pad Thai.
They both laugh, a little nervously.
I went to your book club…
They solve the whodunit yet?
They’re still in the middle.
I’ve always loved the idea of a book club…
It’s seems so quaint.
EXACTLY.
And let me guess…
You waited at the Whitney?
You know it.
They laugh once more.
Did you at least get to see an exhibit?
I went to the Warhol show…
I’d been meaning to check it out.
Incredible, right?
Totally.
A comfortable silence settles over them…
As they take each other in.
Peter is so much more than his clumsy exterior.
He’s inquisitive…
And an artsy-type…
Just like Debbie.
AND he loves Metal Lords.
So we basically lived each other’s day?
It looks like it.
I have a confession to make…
Go ahead.
I’m so glad I took your planner.
Really?
At the coffee shop…
You looked so aloof…
I thought you were some…
High-society droid.
Well you DID spill your coffee.
Ha, sorry about that…
I know I’m a klutz…
Anyway, you’ve got cool hobbies.
I’d never pick you for a Metal Lords fan.
I thought the same thing about you!
Would you wanna grab drinks after this?
Earlier in the day, Debbie would’ve been hesitant…
Too stuck in her rigid plans to do anything spontaneous.
But after a day in Peter’s shoes…
She’s ready to throw her planner in the trash.
Metaphorically speaking, of course.
She smiles.
I’ll pencil you in.
Then, she and Peter flip open their planners…
To plot out their future.
