Phone Tag - Episode 1
by Red Toberman
I wake up with a pounding headache.
At first, I can’t even recognize my own room.
Urghhh…
I try to sit up…
And feel my stomach churn.
Oh god.
Last night’s party was…
Something else.
I think it was fun.
I’m pretty sure…
That I had a good time…
In sort of a vaguely positive, blurry kind of way.
I grab my phone from the nightstand…
And do a double-take.
My background screen looks different.
What the heck?
It’s a picture of our college mascot:
The bulldog.
Did someone switch my background screen?
And then all of a sudden…
It hits me.
Oh my god.
This is definitely not my phone.
I think I know whose it is.
And if I’m right…
This could be really embarrassing.
I set the phone down…
And put my hands to my head.
What did I do?
The sound of a ringtone pierces the air.
Ah!
I shove the phone under my pillow.
I can’t bear to look at it.
But…what if it’s him?
I slide the pillow aside.
It’s a FaceTime call…
From Kayla.
No way.
I drop the phone to the ground…
And in the process…
I accidentally accept the call.
Her voice calls out to the ceiling.
Hello? Ian?
I slowly peer over the side of my bed…
And see Kayla staring up at me.
H-hello.
At first she looks confused…
Then she narrows her eyes.
You.
…Me?
Where’s my boyfriend?!
Put him on right now!!
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
This is all a big misunderstanding!
I have no idea where he is!
Oh, sure!
His phone just magically ended up in your bedroom.
Right.
I’m telling you the truth!
He isn’t here.
She ignores me, looking around the room…
From her tiny screen.
Ian! Come out right now!
You can’t hide from this!
Kayla, I’m sorry, I—
Did I do something last night?
She settles her gaze on me.
You’re unbelievable.
Look, here’s the thing—
Suddenly, I hear an incoming FaceTime call.
I look around, confused.
Then I spot *my* phone…
Perched on the dresser.
I’ve got to go. Sorry!
Don’t you dare!
I reach down and hang up on her.
Gingerly, I step across the room, still feeling sick.
The incoming call is from an unknown number.
Eh, what the heck.
I answer it…
And Ian’s face appears before me.
Suddenly, I feel like utter trash:
My hair is a mess.
I’m still in last night’s clothes.
My makeup is smeared.
And Ian looks…
Incredible.
Perfectly coiffed hair.
Perfectly dreamy eyes.
He smiles sweetly and raises an eyebrow.
Late night?
Ian! Hey…
What’s…what’s up?
Uh, nothing.
Sorry to call you out of the blue.
I hoped you’d pick up even if you didn’t recognize the number.
I lost my phone somewhere.
I’m borrowing my roommate’s.
Yeah…
There’s an awkward silence.
Um, so about last night—
Yeah, about it…
He seems to think his words over.
I just needed to ask you…
Why did you do…
What you did?
I’m at an utter loss.
I rack my brain, trying to remember.
Um, what do you mean exactly?
I’m just confused.
Me too.
Wait…
He looks at me funny.
Do you remember everything that happened?
Welllllll…
Maybe not everything.
He looks away, collecting himself.
Oh…that explains a lot.
I’m sorry, can you catch me up on…
Myself? And what I did?
Oh, right, of course!
So you walked up to me at the party…
Uh-huh…
Grabbed my face…
And kissed me all over my mouth.
My eyes go wide.
Oh no…
Ian, I don’t know what to say.
I am so sorry.
Then you pulled back…
Looked me in the eye…
And said, “I hate you!”
My mouth drops open.
I thought I felt sick before.
Now I really do.
I…I said that?
Yeah…
So uh, you know, kind of mixed signals.
Especially coming from a friend.
A platonic friend…
Who I thought I was on good terms with.
He laughs.
I, I — I don’t know what to, uh—
Suddenly, Ian’s phone starts ringing again.
It’s Kayla, calling back.
What’s that?
Is that my ringtone?
Look, I don’t know how or why…
But for some reason I ended up with your phone!
Anyway, long story short…
Here’s Kayla.
I answer the call…
And place the two phones so they’re face to face.
Ian! What is going on!
Heyyy, Kayla…
You’ve got some nerve!
Spending the night with some other girl!
I didn’t! I’m not even here!
Kayla leans forward, looking more closely.
Oh.
Well, be that as it may—
And that’s not the point!
We’re not even dating anymore.
Mainly because you cheated on me!
Does that ring a bell?
Kayla eyes go wide.
So with all due respect…
Please leave me alone.
Well, it was only once, so, uh…
All of a sudden, Kayla hangs up.
Ian resumes talking to me on my phone.
Phew.
Sorry about that.
Wow.
That was thrilling.
Yeah…
Almost as thrilling as last night.
He gives me that sweet grin again.
I’m so sorry I stole your phone.
And I’m so sorry I said that I hated you…
Because I definitely don’t.
It’s more like I hated to see you dating Kayla.
And—
Please don’t say you’re sorry you kissed me.
I blush.
I wasn’t going to say that…
Because I don’t regret it.
Even if I can’t remember it.
I wanted to ask you…
First things first…
Can I get my phone back?
Hah!
Yes, certainly.
And then…
Can we go out to dinner after?
I’d like that.
I tuck my hair behind my ear and smile at him.
Wonderful.
And hopefully this time…
It’ll be a night we both remember.
