Purrs and Prejudice - Episode 1
by J. Gilbert
I head to the parking lot after my last class…
And groan when I see Ryan.
Ryan is the WORST–
A total jock and kind of a bully.
He’s also…my ex.
I’d love to avoid him…
But for some reason, he’s crouched next to my car.
I march over and glare down at him.
What are you doing?
He glances up.
I’m struck by how blue his eyes are…
But I remind myself that he’s a jerk.
I broke up with him for a REASON.
Something ran under here.
Under my car?
What was it?
Hold on.
He leans down and reaches behind a wheel.
Something under the car squeaks.
Got it!
He stands up, holding a tiny gray kitten.
It lets out another squeaking meow.
Oh my gosh!
I reach toward it.
Ryan frowns and steps back.
Did I say you could have it?
It was under my car, wasn’t it?
But I’m the one who caught it.
What could you possibly want with a kitten?
Maybe I want to keep it!
Oh please.
You’ll probably get tired of it in a week…
And dump it somewhere.
His face falls.
I almost think he looks hurt…
Except I don’t believe he’s capable of that.
I guess you know a thing or two about dumping.
I scowl at him.
You won’t take care of that kitten.
Just give it to me.
I reach out.
The kitten’s eyes grow wide.
It wriggles out of Ryan’s arms…
And takes off across the parking lot.
Look what you did!
What I did?
YOU let it go!
Because you scared it!
We have to catch it before someone runs it over!
Ryan takes off running.
I follow.
At first the kitten is nowhere to be seen.
But then I spot a streak of gray zip between two parked cars.
It dives into the bushes that border the parking lot…
And I dive in after it.
Sharp branches scratch my skin…
But my hands close around something small and furry.
Gotcha!
The kitten meows as I climb out of the bushes.
I hold it tight so it can’t get away again.
Ryan jogs over, looking relieved.
You got it!
He looks me up and down.
You’re a mess.
I narrow my eyes at him.
Thanks.
Jumping into bushes will do that.
No, I meant…
He points at the scratches on my arms.
Come on back to the locker room.
Coach has a first-aid kit.
I’ll fix you up.
I don’t want to go with him…
But the scratches hurt.
Cuddling the kitten, I follow him.
There. All done.
I glance down at the Band-Aids on my arms.
Ryan has cleaned each scratch so carefully.
I can’t believe this is the same guy who…
I push the thought out of my head.
Thanks.
I guess I’ll…get going.
While Ryan fixed me up…
We let the kitten loose in the locker room.
Now I go to catch it…
But it hisses at me and runs away.
Whoops!
He reaches down and catches the kitten easily.
It settles in his arms.
I really think I should keep it.
No way!
Just let me take it, Ryan.
It’ll have a good home with me.
I promise.
Ryan sighs.
Can I ask you something?
I narrow my eyes at him.
I guess.
Go ahead.
Why did you dump me?
Really?
I shake my head.
You know why.
You bullied my friend Jason.
Don’t you remember?
I caught you slamming him into a wall.
After that…
I never wanted to see you again.
Ryan’s face flushes red.
You still don’t know the full story, do you?
I frown.
The full story?
Go on.
Tell me.
Ryan looks reluctant…
But then he takes a deep breath and lets it all out.
I know you think Jason is your friend.
But he isn’t.
If you could have heard what he was saying that day—
What do you mean?
He kept telling people that you and he were going out.
Wait…
What?
Jason and I never dated.
We’re friends.
That’s all.
I know!
I realized he was just making it up.
Especially since you and I were going out at the time.
And he said…other things, too.
Really terrible things.
About you…and your reputation.
My heart plops down into my stomach.
Jason and I have been friends for years.
I’ve always suspected that he had a crush on me…
But I don’t like him THAT way.
I can’t believe he’d ever tell lies about me.
Still, I can’t ignore the look on Ryan’s face.
Ryan and I dated for a year.
I know him well enough to know when he’s telling the truth.
And right now…
He is.
I told Jason to stop spreading rumors.
He laughed in my face.
So…
I lost my temper.
That’s when you showed up.
I shouldn’t have done it.
I know that. I’m sorry.
But I couldn’t stand hearing him lie about you.
And you wouldn’t give me a chance to explain.
I swallow as tears fill my eyes.
I don’t know how to make this right.
You…
You keep the kitten.
I run out of the locker room before he can see the tears fall.
Later that night, Ryan calls me.
I can’t keep the kitten.
My roommate is allergic.
Oh no!
I don’t want to take it to the shelter.
Do you think you could…?
Of course.
I’ll bring it over now.
I can’t believe how sad Ryan looks when he hands over the kitten.
How could I have been so wrong about him?
Ryan, I need to tell you something.
When I dumped you…
I made a mistake.
I thought you were bullying my friend.
I didn’t know the real story.
I’m so sorry.
I hold the kitten close.
It seems to like me more than it did this afternoon.
Or maybe…
It likes us together.
It snuggles under my chin and purrs.
Can I make a suggestion?
Ryan raises his brows.
Let’s share custody of the kitten.
It will live here with me…
But it’ll belong to both of us.
Ryan’s face lights up with a smile.
Really?
I can’t help but smile back.
Yes. Really.
And there’s something else.
Ryan pauses.
What?
If you’re up for it…
I’d like another chance.
Another chance?
With me?
Yeah.
I mean, if you want to—
Ryan steps forward and puts his arms around me.
The kitten purrs even louder.
I want to.
He kisses me.
I’ve missed you so much, Angie.
The kitten meows happily and cuddles between us.
I have to admit…
I’ve missed Ryan, too.
I made a mistake, but now I have a second chance.
And this time…
We have a whole new reason to stay together.
