Snakebite - Part 2
by Craig Pearson
Daria, before I let you in, tell me the truth.
Are you here to exterminate the snakes?
What are you talking about??
I’m here because I got notified that one of the refrigerators malfunctioned.
You’re lying.
James already told me everything.
You’re here to kill them because they escaped.
Alright, fine. Let’s cut the BS.
Saving these snakes is useless.
We have another generation already incubating.
And believe me – the new ones are even better.
Listen to yourself!
You’re a monster.
You don’t care about the snakes at all…
You only care about their venom and what you can sell it for.
If you want to live, you’re gonna open the door for me, RIGHT NOW.
Got it, sweetie?
I’m sorry, Daria.
I can’t.
EMMA!
James, what do I do?
I think she left her key card in her car.
She’s going back for it.
Alright, look. You only have about a minute.
I have to stop her from entering the building…
James, please. Help me.
Please.
Okay, Em. I’m on your team. I’ll do what you say.
Just know I don’t like having you in danger.
Too late for that…
Listen. If you cut the power…the key card won’t work.
How do I do that?
You have to go back to the maintenance room.
But be careful.
I’ve still got your baseball bat.
I’ll be okay.
Are you in the corridor?
Yes! No snakes so far…
I’m in the maintenance room!
Look for the switchboard.
There’s a black switch labeled “master”.
I see it!
Did it work?
Em?
EMMA?
I’m here. But James…
I’m not alone.
Did Daria get in?
No.
It’s a snake.
And it’s…it’s glowing.
Kill it! Hit it with the bat!
I already told you – I’m not killing the snakes!
Just because I’m scared, doesn’t mean I have to get violent.
I don’t believe these snakes are evil.
Besides… this snake isn’t moving at all.
Is it dead?
No…I don’t think so.
It’s just coiled up on the floor.
I didn’t see it until I cut the power.
Turn off your phone, it’ll follow the light!
I have it on “sunset mode,” with the red screen.
I’m afraid to move!
If it hasn’t attacked yet, stay put.
They’re sensitive to movement.
It just slithered between me and the door.
I’m trapped.
I can’t believe it’s GLOWING.
Do you think it’s radioactive?
No.
When we inserted the gene to make their scales neon green…
It must have made them bioluminescent.
I never noticed, because we always work with the lights on.
It’s coming toward me.
Stay still. Get the bat ready.
It’s at my feet.
Kill it!
Wait.
James…
It just…
Hugged me.
What are you talking about?
It wrapped its little tail around my ankle.
Just like my other snakes used to do.
Wait a minute…
I wonder if, when we accidentally made them bioluminescent…
Maybe we made them sensitive to light by accident?
OMG.
That’s what’s making them violent!
They’re sensitive to bright light!
Another side effect…
But James…you know what this means, right?
They’re not violent after all!
Only in the light.
Which means as long as I stay in the dark, I’m safe.
I can’t believe it.
I told you. I knew something was wrong with them.
You were right, Em. I should’ve believed you.
You always were the smarter one ;)
I’m just glad you’re safe.
I wouldn’t be without your help…
Yeah, well. I guess we make an okay team.
Oh no.
What?
I just heard a gunshot.
I think Daria just blew the door off its hinges.
She’s breaking in!
You need to get out of there.
Not without making sure the snakes are safe.
How are you going to do that?
I have a plan.
If I can get all the snakes together, I can hide them.
Then we can call the police to arrest Daria.
But how will you find them all?
I won’t have to…
They’ll find each other.
How?
You keep forgetting…
I know how the snakes behave.
They live in groups. They stick together.
I just need to open all the doors, and they’ll find each other.
You sure about this?
I’m already doing it.
The snake that’s with me is leading me down the corridor.
But all I can see is the snake, glowing green in front of me.
Everything else around me is pitch black. It’s creepy.
I’m scared James.
I hear footsteps!
Emma, sweetie. Where’d you run off to?
Did you break into the facility?
It’s MY lab kiddo. You’re the one who’s trespassing!
Emma, sweetheart - why don’t you trust me?
James told me about the experiments you’ve been doing.
And you’re listening to that liar?
Look, I know you two have a thing for each other or whatever…
But there’s a LOT you don’t know about him, Emma.
Like what?
Like the fact that I fired him yesterday.
Didn’t tell you that, did he, sweetie?
And - ever wonder HOW the snakes escaped in the first place?
Let’s just say your boyfriend may have had something to do with it…
The snakes freed themselves.
HA! Don’t make me laugh.
It’s true! They opened the lock.
I’ve seen them solve puzzles. Picking a lock isn’t so far off.
Oh god. You’re so gullible, sweetie.
You want to know why I fired James?
Why?
I caught him stealing snake venom.
That’s ridiculous.
I’m sure he’s ever told you this…
But James used to be a druggie.
He was addicted to painkillers.
I knew he went through some rough patches.
He still smokes sometimes.
But painkillers?
Some people dilute snake venom and use it like a drug.
It’s a black market, underground thing.
And your precious James is one of those people.
That can’t be true.
When I hired him, he promised me he was clean.
But you know what they say…
Once a snake, always a snake.
Some people never change.
Why are you telling me this?
Because I need a replacement.
James was supposed to be my lead scientist.
Now, Emma - that can be you.
I’ll bring you to the top of the company, kiddo.
You can share the profit from our new generation of snake venom.
I would never do that!
You’re profiting off the suffering of these animals.
And for what?
For a good cause!
We’re making medications that will reduce human suffering.
By sacrificing others.
Don’t be naïve.
The ends don’t justify the means.
I will never work for you.
Never.
Well, in that case…
You better watch your step, sweetheart.
Em, are you okay?
I think so…
I’ve been walking around, finding snakes.
I’m putting them in the behavioral testing room.
The one with all the mazes and puzzles?
Yeah. I have the key, I can lock them in.
Good. Let me know as soon as you have them.
Then I’ll call the police.
How many of these enhanced snakes did you and Daria make?
12.
I have 8 so far…
They’re slithering along with me in a pack.
Guiding me in the dark.
Sniffing each other out?
I hope so.
James, why didn’t you tell me?
?
Daria fired you yesterday.
Yes.
I was going to tell you.
I swear.
So it’s true?
You were stealing snake venom to take as a drug??
I stole the venom…
But not for myself.
I’ve been doing my own experiments.
Trying to see if diluted venom might help people recover from addictions.
Kind of like the nicotine patch to quit smoking.
And Em, I think it might be working.
So you’re just as bad as Daria.
Using these snakes to perform illegal experiments.
I never thought of it that way.
But I guess you’re right.
I thought the ends would justify the means.
Now I know better.
Listen, Em. We can stop this. All of it.
I just want you to be safe.
How can I ever trust you again?
Em, I’ve changed.
I wish I could believe you, I really do.
I care about you, James.
But you’ve lied to me over and over.
Maybe Daria is right…
Once a snake, always a snake.
People don’t ever really change.
Do you believe that?
I don’t know.
OMG.
I can hear Daria in the hallway.
And I can see a light in the distance.
The other snakes?
No, it’s too bright.
Daria is carrying a high-beam flashlight.
But if she shines light on the snakes, they’ll attack.
I know…
And she’s getting closer.
