The Best Mistakes - Episode 10
by Scarlett Lexington
Caleb sees Skye walk in and he stands to greet her.
They can’t stop looking at each other.
Hi.
Hi.
They kiss lightly on the cheek and the touch sends shivers up Skye’s body.
You haven’t changed at all.
Neither have you.
They take stools at the bar and angle them to face one another.
They are so close that they are almost touching.
An energy permeates the air between them.
I’m sorry about earlier, those texts—
We said no more apologizing. This is a fresh start.
Skye nods. All of a sudden, she feels shy.
Are you okay?
Yeah. It’s just…it’s nothing.
Tell me. Please.
He puts his hand on her arm, and she feels a rush of warmth.
We haven’t seen each in forever—
And after the past twenty-four hours, I guess I’m not sure what to say.
I’m nervous too.
He takes her hand in his.
Pretty smooth there for someone so nervous.
He smiles, showing off his giant dimple in his right cheek.
Skye can’t help but smile back.
I’m not ONLY nervous. I’m also really happy to see you.
Me too.
You look beautiful.
Thank you. You’re not so bad yourself.
I can’t believe we’re here. Together.
I guess it was kismet.
I think you’re right.
He hasn’t let go of her hand.
They hold each other’s gaze. The silence is comfortable. Exciting.
I want to hear everything. How’s your family?
Did you stick with advertising? Do you still have that roommate?
Millie, I think?
Good memory. But I live all by my lonesome now.
Well, if you ever get too lonely…
Skye raises an eyebrow.
You’re offering your services?
I’m offering whatever you want.
I’ll keep that in mind.
Please do.
But to answer your other questions — my family is good.
And I did stick with the advertising.
I’m at the same company as five years ago, although I left it for a bit before going back.
Sometimes it helps to be away from something to realize it’s the perfect fit.
She rubs his hand with her thumb.
I’m starting to see that. But what about you?
You’re basically non-existent on social media. What have you been up to?
Wait, you looked me up?
I may have done a couple of searches over the years…
For the first time, it makes me wish I was up on all of that.
Why aren’t you?
I guess it seems impersonal to me. When you share with that many people, something gets lost.
I like when things are quieter, more intimate.
Skye realizes just how opposite he is to Scott, and how much she likes it.
They continue to talk and the bartender takes their order.
Before they know it, the bartender says that it’s last call.
How did that happen so quickly?
We always did get lost in conversation.
Skye smiles.
This time too.
Caleb gestures to their glasses.
One more?
Yeah.
Caleb tries to get the bartender’s attention.
Skye stops him.
I had someplace else in mind.
This time Caleb is the one to raise an eyebrow.
Do you now?
I do.
Where would that be?
She leans closer to him, putting both of her hands on his thighs.
Are you already forgetting your offer to keep me company in my little lonely apartment?
She runs her fingers against his strong thigh muscles…
And lets them roam dangerously close to other parts too.
But if you want to stay here, we can.
He shakes his head furiously and calls for the check.
You know that’s the last thing I want to do.
Caleb wraps his arms around her, pulling her off of her stool and closer to him.
Their bodies are pressed against each other.
He combs one hand through her hair, cupping the back of her head.
Their breathing is heavy, labored.
The bartender clears his throat.
Check’s there, whenever you’re ready.
The bartender gives them some privacy.
Skye hasn’t taken her eyes off of Caleb.
And he’s staring deeply into hers too.
Oh, I’m ready. Are you?
Do you even have to ask?
Skye leans closer.
Their lips are just millimeters apart.
Her mouth parts ever so slightly.
The two can’t take it anymore. It’s like a magnet pulling them together.
They start to kiss—
Slowly.
Umm, guys…
Skye and Caleb remember where they are.
She buries her head in his chest. She was never a PDA girl…
Yet right now all she can think about is pulling Caleb back in for another kiss.
He hands a few bills to the bartender.
Sorry man.
The bartender nods, takes the money, and heads over to the cash register.
You’re sorry?
Because I’m not.
She kisses Caleb again. First his lips. Then his neck.
You are killing me.
Skye laughs and whispers in his ear.
Is that what I’m doing?
And here I thought you were enjoying it.
He looks at her, taking all of her in.
Then he whispers too.
Oh, I am. That’s the problem—
I’m liking this too much.
No such thing.
Tell me again why we’re still here?
I have no idea.
He stands up, puts his hand on the small of her back, and leads her out of the bar.
Once they’re outside, he pulls her closer.
They both smile. This feels so right.
To think, all this happened because I texted the wrong number.
Talk about the best possible mistake. But—
But what?
I’m going to want my name changed in your phone.
To what? Hottest guy on the planet Caleb?
I had something else in mind…
How does Boyfriend Caleb sound to you?
I think that can be arranged.
The two kiss as they get into the cab.
Skye smiles. She feels like she’s driving off into her happily ever after.
