The Best Mistakes - Episode 4
by Scarlett Lexington
You what?
I like you. I always have.
You had to have known.
I didn’t.
Come on, you practically lived at our apartment—
You didn’t notice how much time I spent around you?
It was a small space, it wasn’t like you had much choice.
I had a choice, and I chose to be around you.
Caleb…
Think about it. I’d watch Real Housewives episodes with you. Why do you think I did that?
Because it’s a really good show.
No, because I loved seeing your reactions to it.
You’d talk to the TV, shake your head, gasp at every fight.
You liked it too. There’d be nights we’d stay up talking about it for hours.
That was the part I liked, when we’d just talk.
It wasn’t just about the show, remember?
We got to know each other.
I loved Scott.
And that’s why I never said anything or made a move.
Until now.
Like you said, it’s been years…
I was hoping that now, it’d be different since you and Scott weren’t together.
We’re not together because *you* told him not to call me.
I told him not to call IF he wasn’t serious about you—
There’s a big difference.
Skye considers this.
Caleb makes a good point.
Besides, Scott could have still reached out, but he chose not to.
Skye, when I found out you were the one texting me…
It really felt like fate.
Like it was finally our chance.
I don’t know…
Think about it. When we were texting just now, we had a connection. A spark.
I thought I was texting a stranger.
That’s what was exciting. It wasn’t real.
But it WAS real.
It is — and I’m not just talking about our connection today.
There was nothing between us back then.
That’s not true. I know you felt something.
Caleb…
Remember that period when Scott would run out to the gym every morning?
You’d roll your eyes about it, but I think you preferred it being just the two of us.
He was in his no carbs phase. I was a cereal girl.
I remember. We’d each have a giant bowl of Lucky Charms.
We’d talk about the day ahead and make wishes whenever we found the clover marshmallow.
I made the same wish every day.
What was that?
I think you know.
I want to hear you say it.
Okay. I’d wish that you were with me instead of Scott.
This is a lot to take in.
Is it? Deep down, I think you’ve known it all along.
And I think you may have had some feelings too.
I was all about Scott.
Maybe, but remember when I started dating Dari?
I saw the way you’d look at us.
Because of the way you doted over her. It was so over the top.
Ahhh, you do remember.
How could I not? You were sickeningly sweet together.
Scott was always on his phone or playing some stupid game. You guys were a team.
You’d cook meals together, and really listen when you told each other stories—
It was like you were each other’s world.
I’d watch you go up and give her a kiss on the back of neck, and I knew she meant everything to you.
She didn’t though.
Sure seemed like it.
I knew you were watching us.
Please, of course I was. We already established that I like reality TV…
This was just like a live version right in my living room. That’s why I watched.
That’s the only reason?
That’s it.
Well, I seem to remember how you lit up when I told you I ended things with her…
She was dull. If there was going to be someone else hanging out in the apartment I wanted someone fun.
You can’t admit a tiny part of you was jealous of her?
Jealous? You doted on her and then broke it off.
Not exactly the behavior I look for in a partner.
I had to end it. It wasn’t fair to her. I knew she wasn’t the one.
Yeah? And who was?
You, Skye. It’s always been you. Can you please just give us a chance?
Don’t you think we deserve it?
I don’t know…
We can do something small to start.
I’m not asking you to marry me. Yet 😉
Just meet me for dinner.
This is a lot to take in. I need to think.
I can give you time if that’s what you need.
I do.
Okay, but just promise me that this won’t be the last that I hear from you.
Skye bites her lip.
She knows she shouldn’t promise him that, but she can’t help it.
There’s something inside her that intrinsically trusts Caleb…
And always has.
I promise.
When Skye wakes up the next morning and checks her phone, she sees that she has a text.
Hey, Skye.
Skye does a double-take.
Because even though she assumed it’d be Caleb texting her…
This time, the text actually DID come from Scott.
