The Children - Episode 3
by Mia Siegert
Keira locks the door to the basement behind her before she descends the steps.
Her phone lights up with a text from Doug.
I’m almost there — had to park a few blocks away. Where are you?
In the basement. It wasn’t safe. People are breaking into our home.
Shit. Wait — I see the police up ahead.
I’ll tell them you’re going to come out peacefully and cooperate. Stay put, okay?
Before Keira can reply, a text pops up from an unknown number.
Just checking in. I’m not sure how long I have.
Is the mob under control?
Wait — who is this?
Calvin.
I’m safe. For now. But don’t talk to police yet.
And whatever you do, do NOT go into the boiler room.
Why are you texting me from all these different numbers?
What are you talking about?
Keira sends the unknown number a screenshot of her text conversation with the restricted number.
What the hell is that?
It’s not you?!
No!
Maybe it’s the person coming to pick you up…
They called me “honey.” It’s like they were purposely trying to trick me.
Hide.
I’m going to find out what’s happening.
Calvin, I’m not budging. Not until you tell me what’s going on.
How do I even know this is you?
I said this to you before, Keira — I don’t have much time.
Please trust me a little bit longer. I’ll tell you as soon as I can. I promise.
I just need you to know I meant to do the right thing.
You mean, even though the news says you kidnapped children?
They’re wrong.
I need to go.
Someone was supposed to meet you in the workroom.
Was?
Stay hidden in the basement.
I love you.
Wait — the whole house is surrounded. How can anyone get in?
It’s too hard to explain. I don’t have enough time.
Please trust me.
Cal…
There’s one thing you should know.
I wasn’t sure how to tell you.
Tell me what?
I’m not really a pediatrician.
WHAT THE HELL?
What do you mean you’re not a pediatrician?
Calvin?
Answer me.
But Calvin doesn’t reply.
A few minutes later, Kiera gets a text from Doug.
I’m trying to get to the police so you can get out. But they’re giving a statement.
There’s something you need to see.
I don’t think I can take much more.
You really need to see this.
Doug sends her a video of a crying couple with a young child. The child looks scary—
There’s an angry look on his face, like he wants to kill someone.
What the hell is this?
That’s what’s going on right now.
That kid looks scary.
Where are you?
Hiding.
Something’s really not right.
Keira hears a soft noise from the boiler room.
She strains to figure out what it is—
Is it the pipes from the boiler room?
No. She’s pretty sure it’s something else…
Maybe it’s in my head, but I swore I heard someone calling for help.
I’m going into the boiler room.
Keira, wait for the police.
But someone needs help. I’m positive.
I’m going in, whether you like it or not.
If you do, promise me you’ll keep texting me along the way. I’m worried—
I want to know where you are and what’s happening.
Okay. It’s dark and really filthy in here…
There are a lot of wrappers and empty cans all over the floor.
I think this is where the missing food from the emergency cupboard went…
That’s weird. Why would someone steal food?
I don’t know.
Wait — I hear something.
Something?
What is it?
Screaming.
It’s faint, but—
I’m absolutely positive someone’s screaming.
That’s it. I’m getting a police officer right now. Don’t go any further.
Before she can reply to Doug, a few messages from the restricted number pop up.
Where are you?
I’m in the workroom but you’re not here.
Keira hesitates before she texts.
Maybe she can trick this person into giving her more information.
Why did you want to meet in the workroom?
There’s a secret exit in there. It leads to the sewers—
So we can escape.
Keira pauses. There’s a secret exit to the sewers?
In her home?
Where are you taking me?
Somewhere safe.
When’s our anniversary?
What?
When’s our anniversary?
We don’t have time for games.
This isn’t a game.
I need to know it’s you.
Just come to the work room.
Keira switches her texts back to Doug.
Are the police with you?
Yeah. What’s wrong?
I think I’m in danger.
What? Did someone get inside the house?
I don’t know. But someone’s been texting me pretending to be Calvin.
I asked him when our anniversary is, but he didn’t know it. It’s not him.
What? I’m telling the police. Don’t move.
Keira notices some planks hiding an opening in the wall.
She takes a picture of it and sends it to Doug.
Then she pulls the planks away from the opening. She gasps.
There’s a network of secret tunnels running in and out of her basement.
She takes a photo and sends it to Doug as well.
The person who pretended to be Calvin said something about a secret exit.
They were right. I can’t believe it.
Don’t go in that tunnel!
Could it actually be Calvin texting me?
He wouldn’t forget your anniversary.
I might not trust him now, but I know he’d never forget that.
But why is someone pretending to be him?
What do they want? Who could it be?
I think I might know.
Really?
I’m not supposed to say.
Especially since this isn’t a secure line.
I don’t understand. Are you trying to say you actually know what’s going on?
I’m so sorry.
You lied to me? Seriously?
My husband is missing.
There are apparently hidden tunnels in my house.
I can hear people SCREAMING, and you’re keeping information from me?!
Why the hell won’t you tell me what’s going on?
Because I’ve been instructed not to tell you.
By who?
The government.
