The Dare - Episode 1
by Ellen Goodlett
Do you want to go to Homecoming with me?
Casey sits up in bed and stares at her phone.
She hasn’t spoken to Ethan in 3 years.
Not since their freshman year class trip.
The trip where he made her life a living hell.
I think you’ve texted the wrong number.
This is still Casey Mills, isn’t it?
Exactly my point.
C’mon!
We used to be such good friends.
Do you call all your friends “Bunny?”
Or just the ones you want to make fun of?
“Bunny” was the charming nickname he’d given her during that freshman class trip.
Because her ears stuck out like one, he said.
At first it was kind of cute.
But then he went and called her it in front of other people.
Now, the whole school calls her "Bunny."
And not in a cute way.
It’s even the tagline under her yearbook photo.
Ouch. Low blow.
Deserved.
I said I was sorry for that!
Don’t you believe me?
It’d be easier to believe if you weren’t so…you.
What does that mean?
Casey groans and rolls out of bed, ignoring her phone.
As she gets dressed, she peeks into the mirror.
Chubby cheeks, glasses…
Those big ears.
She looks nothing like the preppy, athletic girls who Ethan hangs out with now.
Because she’s not like them.
She’s geeky, awkward, shy.
Unpopular.
Reluctantly, she returns to her phone.
Seriously…what does that mean?
🤨
It’s just…
Everyone likes you.
You’re probably the most popular guy in school.
Meanwhile, everyone looks at me and sees a joke.
Because of you.
That’s not true.
Have you seen the yearbook?
Maybe people would get sick of that dumb joke if they knew anything else about you.
But since you never go to any school functions, or dances, or parties…
I went to Homecoming once.
Freshman year.
Nothing since then.
What, have you been keeping track of everything I do?
Wouldn’t be hard.
What do you do?
Not go to boring school dances, that’s what.
Sooo…
Is that a 'no' on Homecoming?
Casey closes her eyes.
In her mind, she pictures the Ethan she used to be friends with.
His cute, dimpled grin.
The way he laughed at all her jokes.
…Until he turned her into one.
Why are you even asking me to go to the dance?
Don’t you have 300 other girls begging to go with you?
Of course 😏
Despite herself, Casey laughs.
But I want to go with you.
She stares at the screen, her heart beating faster.
She’s seen Ethan in school, of course.
He tries to say 'hi' to her sometimes…
Or ask how she’s doing.
Those conversations always end with her brushing him off.
Though not before she notices he still has that dimple.
And the same steady green eyes she used to love getting lost in.
She can’t deny it…
She’s thought about him over the years.
Wondered what it would be like to kiss him.
But popular Ethan would never want to kiss her.
A sinking suspicion hits, making her stomach twist.
Why are you texting me?
We’ve barely talked in years.
Did you lose a bet to ask out the nerdy girl or something?
Ha. Actually…
Kind of.
She feels like she’s been punched in the gut.
Of course.
There’s no way Ethan, of all people, would possibly want to go to a dance with her.
He’s just making another joke at her expense.
Forget it, Ethan.
I’m not your punchline anymore.
Casey, wait.
She shuts off her cell.
She’ll block his number later.
Right now, she needs to get to school.
2 hours later…
Casey barely makes it to school in time for homeroom.
She’s way more anxious than usual.
All she can think about is Ethan’s stupid prank.
The jokes he must be telling his friends.
She slams her locker shut…
Only to find Ethan himself behind it.
Leave me alone.
Please, let me explain.
What, did your friends dare you to ask out the most unpopular girl in school?
Was that your bet?
No!
It wasn’t like that.
Whatever.
I’m late for homeroom.
She storms up the hall.
Ethan chases her, but she ignores him…
And slams the classroom door in his face.
30 minutes later…
Casey stops short outside her homeroom.
Ethan’s there, waiting.
Other kids file around them.
Someone whispers “Bunny.”
And everyone snickers.
Casey glares at Ethan.
He winces as a couple other kids laugh quietly.
Eventually, they’re the only two left in the hallway.
Are you going to follow me around all day?
If that’s what it takes.
Just let me explain, Casey.
Haven’t you done enough damage?
You hear them make fun of me.
They’re just doing that because they’re jealous.
Casey bursts into laughter.
Jealous?
Of what?
Come on.
You’re smart, and gorgeous, and funny.
And you’re totally unique.
She stares at him, her eyebrows rising.
He stares right back.
She could get lost in those distracting green eyes of his.
But instead, she shakes her head.
That’s ridiculous.
Is it?
He takes a step closer.
Maybe they’re jealous because of me, then.
He grins.
You did say there were 300 other girls begging to go to the dance with me.
He’s so close now she can feel his breath on her cheeks.
But I want to go with you.
She inhales deeply.
He smells like pine, mint, and something else.
Like the air before a storm.
I thought you said you lost a bet.
I did.
He takes her hand.
His touch sends a frizz of electricity through her body.
The loser had to ask out whichever girl they’ve secretly been crushing on.
She laughs again, softer now.
But that’s ridiculous.
I’ve hardly even talked to you since freshman year.
Not for lack of my trying.
She thinks back to all the times she blew him off.
All his apologies she rejected.
You called me a bunny!
Ethan’s smile drops.
I know.
And I’m sorry.
I didn’t mean for other people to hear.
That was supposed to be my special nickname for you.
It’s just…
He smiles again, and there’s that dimple she always loved.
I’ve always loved bunnies.
He curls a finger under her chin…
Tilting her head back.
When his lips meet hers, it’s everything she imagined it would be.
Fireworks and electricity, and something else.
Like the air right after a thunderstorm passes…
When there’s only clear skies ahead.
