The Favor - Episode 1
by Chase Caldwell
Sydney’s phone rings on her nightstand.
She picks it up and sees that it’s a video call from her friend Ian.
Her eyes go wide with panic.
Not now.
She looks in the mirror on the back of her bedroom door.
Her hair is a mess.
And the baggy old t-shirt she’s wearing is far from flattering.
The phone rings again.
She races to her closet.
Seconds later, the baggy t-shirt flies across the room.
She re-emerges in her favorite top and grabs a hair tie.
The phone rings once more.
Sydney skips across the room and grabs it.
She takes a quick breath to calm herself.
Then she puts on a smile and answers.
Ian’s face pops up on the screen.
Hey!
What’s up?
I need a hundred dollars.
Like, right now.
Ian stands against a grey wall.
Chattering voices can be heard in the background.
What?
Where are you?
Ian looks over his shoulder.
I’m in the bathroom at Semolina’s.
The restaurant?
Yes!
I don’t have time for questions.
I need a hundred dollars.
You’re my best friend.
Will you please help me?
What do you need it for?
Ian looks away.
Umm…
That’s…private.
Sydney raises an eyebrow.
Why are you at Semolina’s?
That’s not important.
Could you just drive out here right now with the money?
I’ll pay you back when we hang out this weekend.
Please!
Just do me this one favor.
Sydney thinks it over for a moment.
So you want me to give you money, but you won’t tell me why?
Exactly!
Ian smiles.
Sydney doesn’t.
Yeah. I’m out.
You should call someone else.
Wait!
Bye.
Sydney hangs up.
She falls onto her bed and lets out a sigh.
A few seconds later, her phone rings again.
It’s Ian.
Reluctantly, she answers.
What?
I’m on a date, okay?
I’m with Tessa Shepherd.
I brought her here to try and impress her.
But I forgot my wallet.
Which is why I called you.
Sydney’s heart sinks.
I can’t ask Tessa to pay for dinner on our first date.
I’ll look like a total idiot.
Plus, this is probably a pity date for her…
So I need all the points I can get.
Tessa Shepherd?
Yeah.
What?
Sydney looks away as tears well up in her eyes.
Hey!
Are you okay?
Sydney wipes her eyes.
Nothing.
It’s nothing.
Sydney, what’s wrong?
Did I catch you at a bad time?
Sydney winces.
Her face goes red.
No.
No, Ian. You didn’t catch me at all.
What?
Sydney lets out a big sigh.
Look, we’ve been friends for like, forever.
But lately it’s started to feel…different.
Ian leans in, absorbing every word.
I thought you felt it too.
I thought that was why we made plans for this weekend.
You know, to talk about it.
Talk about what, Sydney?
Sydney covers her face to hide her embarrassment.
I like you, Ian.
And not just as a friend.
Ian is dumbfounded.
You do?
Yes!
And I thought you liked me, too.
But now you’re out with Tessa…
So clearly I totally misread everything.
Ian chuckles to himself.
What are you doing?
The chuckle turns to a laugh.
Are you laughing?
No!
Ian tries to hold it in but he can’t.
I can’t believe you.
I know it looks like I’m laughing but…
He lets out another chuckle.
I’m not.
You know what?
You’re a jerk!
Have a great time with Tessa!
Sydney hangs up and tosses the phone across her room.
She sits back and fumes.
The phone rings, but she’s too angry to even consider answering.
20 minutes later
Sydney is back in her baggy t-shirt.
She’s on her bed with a carton of ice cream.
As she swallows a spoonful of Rocky Road, the doorbell rings.
A second later she hears knocking.
Sydney puts the carton down and walks out of her bedroom.
As she approaches her front door, she hears a voice on the other side.
Sydney!
Let me in!
Sydney rolls her eyes.
She looks out the peephole to find Ian standing at her door.
He knocks harder.
Go away!
Sydney, please!
I have nothing to say to you.
Sydney turns and walks away.
Ian keeps knocking.
A moment later, Sydney hops back onto her bed and picks up the ice cream again.
Her phone rings.
It’s Ian.
She denies the call and eats another spoonful.
Oh that’s good.
It rings again.
Nope.
She denies the call again.
No thank you.
The phone rings once more.
She finally gives in and answers.
Ian, standing outside her front door, pops up on the screen.
What are you doing?
Did you mean what you said?
Don’t make this worse than it already is, okay?
There’s no need to rub it in.
No!
I’m serious.
And I wasn’t laughing at you earlier.
I swear.
Then what were you laughing at?
Ian looks away.
I can’t do any more secrets today, Ian.
What was it?
Ian builds up the courage to look back at her.
I never thought you and I could be a thing.
I thought there was some kind of code against dating your best friend.
So I took all the feelings I’ve had for you and buried them.
Feelings?
Yeah. Feelings.
Sydney, I’ve been in love with you for years.
I think I’ve been in love with you since we met.
Sydney lets out a laugh.
Ian, we met in the third grade.
I know!
You wore those big red glasses and the little poofy things in your hair all the time.
I thought you were perfect then.
And I think you’re perfect now.
If you want to give us a shot, I’m all in.
Tears well up in Sydney’s eyes.
This time, they’re happy tears.
A smile creeps its way across her lips.
She nods.
I do want to give it a shot.
Ian smiles.
Great.
Now can I please come in?
Okay!
One second.
With her phone in her hand…
Sydney starts walking out of her bedroom door…
When suddenly, a thought hits her.
Hey.
What happened with Tessa?
Who?
Tessa. Your date.
At the restaurant?
Ian goes white.
Sydney’s mouth drops.
Did you leave her there?
Uh-oh…
Be right back!
