The Gun
by Craig Faustus Buck
Sup?
Not me.
It's after 12.
So?
You said you'd be here at 11.
I lied.
You're lying now. Stand up!
You're the one who got me home at 3 30 last night.
So? I still got up and got to the gig on time.
Bully for you.
I'm just sayin.
If you wanted me bright and smiling in the a.m., you should have got me home at a decent hour.
Maybe asking you out wasn't such a good idea.
I told you it wasn't, but you wouldn't listen. We shouldn't shit where we sleep.
We didn't do either.
You know what I mean. It's asking for trouble to date your boss.
You could have said no.
Oh. So it's my fault?
It's your fault you're still in bed.
OK OK. I'll be right over.
You were supposed to be here more than an hour ago.
I'm on my way.
Don't forget the gun.
The gun?
I left it in your garage. Don't you remember anything from last night?
I remember three Cuba Libres.
Great :( You had six.
Feels like sixteen.
Don't blame me if you can't hold your liquor. Get up!
I'm up.
I gotta get across town. You'll have to do it yourself.
Me?
We've got a contract. It needs to be done.
That's your department.
You've got the gun.
I can be there in 15. Can't you wait?
I've got some people I gotta meet. They're probably already waiting.
Please?
Don't beg. You're the reason I'm running late.
I don't know how to use a gun.
Just point it and pull the trigger.
If I mess up we're screwed.
Then don't mess up. Just be careful.
I'm afraid. You've never even shown me how the gun works. Can't you teach me how to use it? Maybe let me practice? We can do this thing some other time.
Buck up. Where's your courage?
Where's your brain? I'm bound to blow it. I'm not prepared for this.
A contract's a contract. The clock is ticking.
I'm afraid of the gun.
What would you rather use? A hammer?
At least I've held one in my hand before.
And what if you miss? Then what? You miss with the gun, you can take another shot. You miss with a hammer, it could get messy.
I'm outta here. Just wait for me.
LATER
I'm here. Where U?
I told you I had to go meet some people. Did you bring the gun?
It's in the bag.
What bag?
A brown paper bag. I didn't want it in my purse.
You brought it in a paper bag?
It's fine.
The gun's fully loaded. If the bag rips, it could fall and go off. Someone could get hurt.
The bag's not going to rip. It's from Bloomingdales.
I wonder about your judgment sometimes.
My judgment? Who kept me out til all hours? You knew we had this thing to do this morning.
Don't rub it in. I'm already regretting it.
Regret asking me out or getting me back so late?
I'm glad I asked you out, OK? Is that what you want me to say?
I want you to be honest.
I had a good time. Didn't you?
I did. Until this a.m. I'm really feeling uneasy about doing this.
You'll do fine. You've got nerves of steel.
Then why am I shaking like a leaf?
Six Cuba Libres?
You were drinking more than I was.
The magic of body weight. You ready for your big debut?
No. But here goes.
PAUSE
I'm ringing the bell. No answer. I don't think he's here.
Damn. I hope he didn't split.
Hold on. There's a note on the ground. Must have fallen off the door.
Well?
He ran out for coffee. Back in ten.
Good. That gives you time to get ready.
What should I do?
Go around the back. There's a key to the kitchen door under the mat.
Shouldn't I wait for him?
It'll go a lot smoother if you're all set to go when he gets back. Especially if you have trouble with the safety on the gun.
OK. I'm walking down the driveway.
I really appreciate this. I know you're nervous.
You owe me big time.
How about dinner tonight.
After all this, you want to take me out again?
I told you I had a good time.
You weren't very convincing.
You're not making this easy.
Sorry. I'm just nervous.
What's happening?
I opened the door and put back the key. Now I'm going in.
Good.
I'm in the kitchen.
OK. CAREFULLY take the gun out of the bag. I don't want any accidents.
Do you mean it?
What?
Did you really have a good time?
I told you I did.
OK. I've got the gun.
Do you see a little thingie at the top of the handle?
Yes.
Push it to the left to unlock the trigger.
Done.
Then you're all set.
Heard a car door. He's back.
Show time.
PAUSE
Done.
How'd it go?
One shot. I nailed it.
Where is he?
Signing off on the contract and writing the final check.
Thank god. I thought he'd never be satisfied with our remodel of that house.
I think he liked watching a woman use a nail gun. And that loose piece of molding looks perfect now.
Champagne tonight?
:D
