The Thrill of the Wander - Episode 1
by Brandi Reeds
Chandra picks up a call from her sister, Violet.
This better be good.
I know it’s late, I’m sorry…
But I need help.
What’s wrong?
Promise me you won’t tell Mom.
Chandra waits.
I’m in the city.
What?!
We were playing The Thrill of the Wander.
No!
And this time I was the wanderer.
You let someone blindfold you, drive you downtown, and leave you to find your way home?
I know, it was stupid.
Wait, why are you calling me?
Why didn’t you call Anderson?
We got into another fight — it got ugly.
Anderson’s bad news. You should know that by now.
Spare me the lecture then and come and get me!
Fine. Just stay where you are so I can find you.
I can’t, I have to keep moving.
What? Why?
I just…
You just what?
I have a weird feeling I’m being followed…
I need you to hurry.
I’m already in the car.
I have less than 10% battery.
So I should probably save it.
Just come!
Where are you?
The street sign says Milwaukee and Balboa.
There is no intersection at Milwaukee and Balboa in the Heights!
There has to be.
I’m looking right at the sign.
GPS says different!
You can’t be in the Heights!
Uh…
Who dropped you off?
Violet sighs.
Violet, tell me.
Dane.
You didn’t.
Just because you two broke up doesn’t mean I have to stop seeing him.
Call him and ask where he left me.
God, you’re annoying. Hang on.
Chandra pulls the phone away from her ear and texts Dane.
Do you see a restaurant or maybe a hotel you can go to?
No.
At least give me some landmarks.
There’s nothing here but warehouses.
Google the intersection!
I did and nothing comes up. Not unless you’re in West Texas—
Don’t be ridiculous.
I was only blindfolded in the car for about half an hour.
Okay, so you can’t be far.
Hurry. It’s creepy out here.
I’m going to call the police.
I already said I didn’t want this getting back to Mom.
That would completely blow up my spot.
Okay. No cops. For now.
Please.
Is there any water near you?
Like a river, or—
The phone goes silent.
Violet?
There’s no answer.
The phone call terminates.
Chandra calls back.
The call goes straight to voicemail.
Chandra dials another number.
Well, hello, beautiful.
Where’s my sister?
How the hell should I know?
She told me she was with you tonight.
You were playing The Thrill of the Wander.
Look, she was upset about Anderson…
Sounded like she wanted an escape.
We were just hanging out.
Nothing happened between us.
I don’t care about that.
All I care about is finding Violet. You have to help me.
She’s alone with zero phone battery.
She says she’s near Milwaukee and Balboa.
There is no Milwaukee and Balboa.
Why do you think I’m calling you?
She must have wandered somewhere.
How long ago did you leave her?
Maybe half an hour.
I always take lots of twists and turns to confuse the wanderer.
But she’s close.
We’ll find her.
How could you do this?
She’s okay.
Nothing bad happens in the Heights.
I’m in your parking lot.
I’ll be right down.
Hurry, okay?
She sounds really lost. I’m worried.
What were you thinking, letting her play that game?
I was thinking she’s an adventurous girl who needed a good time.
You took advantage of her.
It was her idea!
Dane emerges from his apartment wearing a black hoodie.
He approaches Chandra’s car, and gets in.
Wow. You look amazing.
Tell me where to go.
Remind me — why did we break up?
Because you do stupid crap like this.
Take a left out of the parking lot.
Chandra drives.
I dropped her off near Century Park.
There aren’t any warehouses over there.
So…?
She said she was near a bunch of warehouses.
Dane shrugs.
Anyway, she checked her phone battery before I blindfolded her.
I wouldn’t have left her in the middle of the Heights with no phone.
You know how she likes practical jokes. She’s probably pranking you.
I don’t think so.
She sounded scared.
I left her just up here in the alley.
Chandra slows as they pass the park, then stops the car in front of a dark, eerie lane.
You left my sister here? Alone?
I’m sorry.
You left her thirty minutes ago, right?
Yeah…
She could be anywhere within a two-or-three-mile radius.
I’ll search on foot. You drive up and down the streets.
Dane gets out of the car.
Chandra drives the dark streets for a few minutes.
She periodically tries Violet’s phone.
On the fourth attempt, it rings, and Violet answers.
Chandra, thank God!
Violet! I thought your phone died.
Bad service—
Listen, I’m at Westmont and Milwaukee now.
Where are you?
I think I see your car.
Look to your left. See me?
No.
I’m coming—
I don’t see you.
I’m jogging toward your car.
Turn left on Westmont.
Chandra turns left and continues slowly.
I don’t see you!
Just unlock the door, I’m almost there!
Violet, where are you?!
Violet sprints out of the shadows.
She dives into the car.
Hey!
Hey?! That’s all you have to say to me?
Chandra starts driving.
She doesn’t notice that Violet is wearing Dane’s black hoodie.
Oh my god Chandra, don’t be so dramatic.
Are you joking? I was worried about you!
You sounded so scared!
I mean I was pretty lost, but don’t freak out or anything.
Where even were you?!
I’m telling you. Down by the warehouse—
Violet, there aren’t any warehouses around here.
Yes, there are. You’ve never seen them because you’ve never wandered.
Wait. Where’s Dane?
You didn’t leave him down there, did you?
Shoot.
Chandra calls Dane, who answers, out of breath.
Did you find her?
I did. Where are you?
Almost back at the park.
I see you.
Dane is as white as a ghost when gets in the backseat of the car.
Chandra drives.
She doesn’t notice he’s no longer wearing a black hoodie.
Simultaneously, Dane and Violet laugh.
By far the best game of Wander we’ve ever played.
Amazing.
Are you two kidding me?!
Don’t be mad. Besides, look at us!
I miss hanging out. Just the three of us.
That’s not happening.
Oh come on…you know you miss me…
Dane laughs a little mischievously at Chandra’s blush.
But he curbs his laughter as he notices something on the cuff of his jeans.
Upon examination, it looks like blood.
Tonight’s not his fault, I wanted to play.
I needed a break from Anderson, okay? And Dane was there for me.
He helped get my mind off things.
There’s dried blood on Dane’s thumb, too.
He scrapes it off.
What do you say? Forgive me?
Are you done playing this ridiculous game?
Dane and Violet share a look.
Violet raises a brow.
Dane gives a discreet nod, answering Violet’s unspoken questions:
Yes, Anderson deserved to die for hitting Violet tonight. It hadn’t been his first time.
Yes, his body is still by the warehouse, in a pool of blood.
Yes, Dane managed to wipe her prints from the knife she used to stab him.
And yes, he doesn’t think Chandra noticed that Violet’s wearing his hoodie to hide her bloody t-shirt.
Guys! Promise me.
Dane is still locked in a stare with Violet.
It’s done.
