Truth or Repair - Episode 1
by Alyssa Lerner
Where are you?!
Running late again 😬
Girl. You NEED to get your bike fixed.
I can’t!
Mike works at the repair shop.
My heart sinks into my stomach at the thought of him.
But I thought you were crushing hard on Mike!
What happened?
We sort of had…a moment.
OMG.
How am I just hearing about this?!
Because I’m so embarrassed! šŸ™ˆ
My heart races as I think back to the memory I’ve been trying to block out all week.
We were both at Denise’s party last week.
I was obviously excited to see him.
I close my eyes for a moment, basking in that memory.
His messy brown hair…
His soft t-shirt hugging his strong arms…
It makes my knees weak just thinking about it.
Someone suggested we play blindfolded truth or dare…
…and I agreed to play.
What happened?
When it was my turn…
I put on the blindfold…
And Denise dared someone to kiss me.
I felt these strong hands take me by the waist…
Pull me in…
And I felt this sweet, soft kiss.
When I pulled off the blindfold, it was Mike.
Omg dream come true!
Almost, but not quite.
Once I saw the look on his face…
Well, he looked like he would rather be ANYWHERE else but with me.
You don’t know that for sure.
Yes, I do. I could see it on his face.
Plus, he was totally pressured into kissing me!
I heard Denise egging him on.
He didn’t actually want to.
Which is why I ran away.
I totally messed up. šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø
I embarrassed him in front of all his friends.
And I’m positive he hates me now.
I’m sure he doesn’t.
You just need to talk to him!
And get your bike fixed while you’re at it šŸ˜‰
…Or maybe I can buy a new bike? šŸ˜…
I sigh, looking down at my phone.
I know Nikki is right.
I know I need to stop running from everything.
I check the time and see that I’m 10 minutes late for class.
Ugh. Fine. I’ll go get it fixed.
Later that day
I walk up to the small repair shop with my bike in tow.
My heart stops.
Mike is right inside, laughing with a customer.
He has the most gentle, earnest smile.
I duck my head down and enter.
Mike spins around.
His smile fades when he recognizes me.
Oh. Hey.
He purposely avoids eye contact.
Hi, uh…
I give him a nervous smile.
My bike is…broken.
Okay, I’ll take a look.
He pulls the bike over to him.
Our hands touch briefly and it sends a shiver down my spine.
He leans down and inspects the bike.
Then, he looks up at me, worried.
You’ve been riding this thing?
Not really.
He breathes a quick sigh of relief.
Oh, good. The brakes are completely shot.
And the front wheel is bent.
Guess that explains the steering issues.
What did you do to it?
I crashed it.
Mike stands up straight.
Are you okay?
My heart melts.
His first concern is for my safety?
I mentally kick myself for messing it up with him.
He really is perfect.
Yeah, funny story…
After Denise’s party last week, I rode my bike home.
And I lost control going down a hill.
Mike snorts out a laugh.
I look up at him, puzzled.
I’m sorry, I don’t mean to laugh.
It’s just — that must have been a bad night for you.
First, you had to kiss me, which you obviously hated.
And then, you crashed your bike?
Mike shakes his head and grins this wide, self-deprecating smile.
I open my mouth in shock.
You think I hated kissing you?
Mike’s smile fades.
You ran away without saying a word!
What was I supposed to think?
He finally meets my eyes with his own.
They are full of hurt and regret.
My heart beats out of my chest.
Now is the time.
I have to tell him how I feel.
I take a deep breath.
I’ve wanted to kiss you since the day I met you.
I just…panicked.
When I took off the blindfold, there was so much uncertainty in your face.
And I’m so used to running from my feelings.
I mean, I’ve liked you for months now.
But I had zero plans to ever tell you that.
Mike perks up at this.
Huh.
He takes a step toward me.
And something like excitement glimmers in his eyes.
You like me?
I laugh, and throw my hands up in defeat.
I do.
There. All my cards are on the table now.
Mike slips his hands in his pockets, nervously.
His voice lowers.
Funny story…
I asked Denise to dare me to kiss you.
Guess you’re not the only one afraid to say how they feel.
Adrenaline races through my body.
I suddenly feel bold.
Confident.
He reaches out to me.
I gasp softly as he takes my hand in his.
Maybe we could have a do-over.
With no dares.
He leans in close to me.
Our faces are inches apart.
I can feel his breath dancing on my lips.
And no blindfolds either.
I close the rest of the distance between us.
And meet his lips in the most perfect kiss.
Warmth rushes through my body.
He brings his palm behind my head, pressing his lips into mine.
And then, we slowly pull apart.
I touch my lips with my fingers, in shock.
I guess I didn’t have to worry about you not liking me.
Mike grins down at me.
No, you didn’t.
Not at all.
I wrap my arms around him, smiling.
I’m so full of happiness.
And I’m more than ready for another kiss.
