Under the Influence - Part 4
by Joe Tripician
I saw a ghost last night.
What? Did Lisa return?
Yes, but I already left the bar.
My bar buddy Alex called me, said she came back to pick up her purse.
He saw bruises on her face and arms.
Shit. What happened?
Some men kidnapped her, roughed her up in their car
then dumped her a few blocks away.
fucking hell this is scary
Did you see her again?
Once. On video.
Alex showed me the video from the outside surveillance camera.
When the two men in ski masks grabbed her
she was pale as a fucking ghost.
Where is she now?
No one knows...
She didn't go to the cops.
Did you give them the video?
Yeah, but they didn't seem too interested.
She never filed a complaint. Just vanished.
But there's some good news:
Alex found a backup video from the night of the accident.
I thought you said the videos disappeared.
I told you he was a fuckup -- fortunately...
what's on the video??
My dad comes out first, and speaks to his driver
He must have told him to take the night off, cause the driver just nodded and left.
Then Claude exits the bar, pulling Lisa by the arm
They all get into the car...
Finally your dad walks out and gets in.
Come on, tell me: WHO WAS BEHIND THE WHEEL?
My dad.
Claude sat shogun.
Lisa & your dad in the back.
Jesus! It's true!
Jane, hold on, Alex's texting me
Whatup, Alex?
a little bit later
did u hear about Alex?
Just met w/ him at hospital
dude what's going on?
He was making a copy of a surveillance video when two guys came in, beat him up, and stole all the videos.
shit man that sucks bad
Alex is scared silent. Won't talk to the cops or anyone about it now.
I have to find those videos.
you have to give it up
you wanna be the next one to get beat?
I'm gonna confront my dad.
what? u think he's gonna confess to u?
What else can I do?
LET
IT
THE
FUCK
GO!
the next day
Are you sure about this?
Lisa's not here to file a report and Alex refuses.
I figure my dad dismissed his driver, so that they could speak in private.
Tell me what you found about the #s.
That's confidential info, Tom.
You have to tell me or I will deny everything I told you,
and I will say you're making it up.
Okay, don't go nuclear. Just promise me an exclusive on this story first,
and don't tell anyone else.
You got it.
So I checked and Lisa's bank account is from the company she runs.
It's a non-profit, and I suspect she's washing illegal campaign donations through it for your father's reelection.
a little bit later
Shit this is a fucking nightmare!
The other bank account is your father's.
A substantial amount was wired into his account a few days after the accident.
what is "substantial"?
$50K
That has got to be a payoff for taking the fall for my dad.
$50K? For 2 years in jail? It doesn't seem worth it.
He always undervalued himself.
But for now Matt can't tie it directly to Claude or Lisa.
I'll try to get my dad to talk.
Be careful!!!
I promise. But you know what else Matt said?
That you're a fool to do this?
He thanked me. Said what I am doing is very brave,
that it's the right thing to do.
What did you say to that?
I asked him to tell me again after this is over...
a little bit later
Tom, are you okay?
Lisa! Where the hell are you?
South America.
wtf?!
I heard your friend's in the hospital. I'm sorry. I feel responsible.
Tell me what the fuck is going on!
That reporter Matt told me what he suspects.
He asked me to confirm.
I don't want to chat on the phone.
but I'll be back soon.
Shit, Lisa, give me a clue or something.
What should I do?
I don't know about you.
But I got myself a pack of pit bull lawyers.
a little bit later
Dad, we have to talk. Now, please!
Tom, this is Claude.
I'm holding onto his phone for protection.
What do you mean?
First tell me what you know.
I don't want to talk to you. Get me my dad.
I can't do that, Tommy.
Then eat shit, fuckface!
later that night
Dad, I can't find Tom.
I'm sorry to hear that.
I'm sure he's fine.
It's best we don't speak with him, sweetie.
But he can help keep you out of jail.
Listen very carefully, Jane.
There's one important thing you must know...
What??
At this point, I'll be safer in jail than out.
