Unseen and Unheard - Episode 3
by Charlie Poe
There has to be some reason—
There has to be an explanation for how and why I’m still here.
Wait — Kira!
What?
No one else can talk to me. But you can.
Okay, so what?
So…you can talk to all those other people for me.
You can get in touch with Jax! And we can figure this out.
Hmm…you’re right. Maybe he’ll be able to put together a missing step.
If nothing else…I can at least tell him I love him. Through you.
Ugh, okay fine. I’ll help.
Kira texts Heather’s boyfriend.
Hey, Jax. It’s Kira. I need your help.
Hey, Kira. What’s up?
Ok, Jax, this is going to sound crazy…but Heather is still here.
Well, sort of.
Kira, that’s not funny. I’m not in the mood.
Jax, she’s my best friend. I’m not playing around.
I don’t know what’s going on, but somehow, she’s still here. She’s been texting me.
Kira, you’re in shock—
Believe me, I miss her too.
Kira texts Heather.
He isn’t buying it.
Tell him that I love him even though he has fish feet.
What?
Just do it.
Jax, she said that she loves you even though you have fish feet?
Where are you?
The Pizzeria. Does fish feet mean something?
It’s an inside joke only Heather would know.
Stay right where you are. I’ll be there as soon as I can.
I’m going to bring someone who might be able to help.
Who?
Professor Thomas.
Kira texts Heather.
Jax said he’s heading here and going to bring Professor Thomas.
OMG. That’s brilliant.
I never had him as a teacher. I just know he’s super weird.
But that’s exactly it…he loves supernatural stuff.
He’s got at least 20 books on ghosts and aliens and other crazy stuff.
If anyone would know anything about how to fix this messed up situation, it’d be him.
Well, hopefully he has some answers for us.
1 hour later
Jax is pulling up now with Professor Thomas.
I can see them! Quick—
Show them your phone, so they can see.
Okay.
Heather? This is Jax on Kira’s phone. Is that really you?
Yes, baby. I can see you. But I can’t hear you…
It’s like being underwater.
I love you. We’re going to figure this out.
I love you, too.
I’m going to pass the phone to the Professor, now.
Okay.
Heather? This is Professor Thomas. Are you there?
Yes, Professor. But I don’t know what’s going on.
Extraordinary. Somehow you’ve managed to move into a different plane of existence…
On your plane, you’re not quite living, yet, not quite dead.
What can we do?
I think we need to figure out why it happened first.
I’ve read a lot of stories where someone undertakes a metaphysical existence because they have “unfinished business.”
Can you think of anything you’ve left unfinished?
No. I can’t even wrap my mind around being in a different plane than you guys—
You’re literally 3 feet in front of me. Isn’t there a way to get back?
I don’t know. What do you remember from the accident?
I remember leaving the party, angry. I was driving along I-87. And then…
Nothing.
It’s like my memory is wiped.
I heard you had a fight with Jax and then you were struck by a drunk driver. Is that right?
I guess.
And they haven’t found the driver, right?
Yes.
Hmm…what if your unfinished business is to find the truck driver?
Could it really be that simple?
Only one way to find out!
Let’s go to the site of the accident and look for clues. We’ll drive there—
If my understanding of the metaphysical is correct, you should be able to ride in the car as well.
Okay…
I’m going to pass Kira’s phone back to her. We’ll touch base again once we’re at the scene.
Heather, are you ready for this?
I’m ready for anything that might give us answers.
Ok, I get that. It’s just that…
This guy, he’s even weirder than I thought.
My skin is legit crawling around him…
He seems, idk, excited?
Something about him just makes me feel really uncomfortable.
I’m a little uneasy, too.
But right now, he’s my only hope.
Listen though, if you give your phone back to him…
Delete these texts — okay, Kira?
He might get angry if he sees them.
Yeah. Definitely.
Welp, off we go…
