Walk of Shame - Episode 1
by Rebecca Phelps
Quinn walks home alone at night.
The street is dark and deserted.
Her breath is erratic.
She’s scared.
She takes out her phone and swipes to "Favorites."
Please answer. Please answer.
Anishka appears onscreen, waking up in her bed.
Quinn? Are you okay?
I’m sorry to call so late.
It’s fine, but I thought you were on a date.
I was, but I had to leave.
Anishka, I’m scared.
Whoa, what’s going on?
Where are you?
I don’t know. Uptown somewhere.
He drove.
I don’t recognize the streets.
Slow down. What happened?
As soon as we sat down at the restaurant…
Oh, god. I think he’s following me.
What?
I’m too scared to look.
Just point the camera behind you.
Keep walking, though.
Do you see anyone behind me?
No, just darkness.
Where are you walking to?
Just away!
Away from the restaurant.
Look for a street sign.
I’m grabbing my keys.
There it is again! I hear footsteps.
Don’t stop walking.
Look for a crowded place…
A bar or something.
There’s nothing around.
I’m in the middle of nowhere.
Okay, don’t panic.
I’m walking down to my car.
Tell me what happened at the restaurant.
As soon as we sat down…
He asked about Scott.
What? I thought you met this guy on an app.
I did!
Then how did he know about Scott?
He must have recognized my picture.
Oh, right.
You were in the paper a lot after it happened.
Quinn sees Anishka getting into her car…
And putting her phone in a holder.
So we sat down and right away he said:
"Aren’t you the girl who killed her boyfriend?"
I’m getting on the freeway, Quinn.
You need to give me some cross streets.
Oh god!
What?
Something moved in the alley.
Point the camera behind you again.
I still don’t see anyone.
Just keep walking.
I thought his profile picture looked familiar.
But it wasn’t until tonight that I remembered who he was.
Who is he?
He was a friend of Scott’s. We met once.
He’s just trying to scare you, Quinn.
Everybody knows the accident wasn’t your fault.
Tell that to Scott’s family.
Scott drove you off a bridge, Quinn.
How could that be your fault?
Anishka, I have to tell you something.
It’s about that night.
We’ll talk about it after I pick you up.
No, now!
The night Scott died…
He wasn’t driving the car.
I was.
What do you mean?
We were crossing the bridge…
And suddenly, he grabbed the wheel.
Once we were in the cold water, I swam out.
And Scott…he just never came back up.
Why didn’t you swim in after him?
I don’t know.
I’ve felt guilty ever since.
Why didn’t you ever tell me this?
I’m sorry, Anishka. I was scared.
I couldn’t tell his parents the truth.
So I said it was an accident.
Why are you telling me this now?
Because the guy at the restaurant—
He knew!
He grabbed my hand and he hissed in my ear:
“It’s your turn.”
Quinn, listen to me.
Don’t panic, okay?
What do you mean?
Don’t look behind you. Don’t stop walking.
You’re scaring me, Anishka.
I said don’t stop walking!
And don’t turn around.
I don’t know where to go!
Look for a landmark or something.
Um, I see a church up ahead.
What church?
I don’t know! A white one!
Try to get to it.
Quinn? Quinn, why are you stopping?
Quinn’s eyes have grown huge.
What’s wrong? What happened, Quinn?
The footsteps are echoing.
Do you hear them?
What do I do?
Run.
I said run, Quinn!
Quinn runs for her life.
The footsteps run after her.
Do you see a street name yet?
Yes, Broadview. And Elm.
I know where that is.
Get inside the church!
Quinn desperately tries the doors of the church.
It’s locked!
Quinn freezes.
Her breath is shaky.
What is it, Quinn?
It’s quiet.
Too quiet.
Point the camera behind you.
I’m scared. I’m so scared.
It’s okay, just do it.
The image from Quinn’s camera is shaky.
But the view behind her is clear:
A young man with a malevolent gaze…
Is less than a block away.
What do you see, Anishka?
Bang on the church door, Quinn!
What do you see??!
Is he there?
Yes. And he’s close.
Quinn slowly begins to turn.
Don’t look! Just bang on the door!
Sobbing with fear, Quinn bangs on the door.
Please! Please open. Please!!
Behind her, the man slowly approaches.
Please.
Suddenly, the church doors swing open.
Quinn runs inside, slamming the door behind her.
I’m almost there, Quinn.
Just a minute more now.
What should I do?
Run to the back.
Find an exit.
Quinn runs through the church.
The doors open behind her as she knocks over the holy wine.
She makes it to a darkened back office.
There’s no other door.
I can’t find the light switch.
It’s okay, Quinn. I’m at the church.
I’m just parking.
No, you can’t come in through the front!
He’ll see you!
He’s not here.
What?
There’s no sign of him, Quinn.
That’s because he’s already inside!
I’m coming in the door right now.
The place is empty, Quinn.
Where are you?
I went to the back, like you told me to.
Okay, here I come.
Quinn trembles in fear as the screen shows Anishka’s face.
Her eyes take up the whole screen, staring intently.
Suddenly, every light turns on.
Quinn is crouching down below a large cross.
Anishka! Is that you?
Did you turn on the light?
No, Quinn.
I’m not in the church.
What?
Anishka pulls her phone away…
Revealing that she’s back in her own apartment.
I knew about Scott, Quinn.
I knew that you killed him…
Because you were drunk when you drove the car off that bridge.
No. I swear it’s not true!
You were always drunk.
I never believed for a second that Scott was driving.
That’s why I told his friend to ask you out.
Who turned on the lights, Anishka?
That’s why I told him to follow you.
Quinn backs into a corner, eying the office door—
Waiting for the footsteps that keep growing closer.
Because I have a secret for you, too.
Please, Anishka. I didn’t mean to do it.
Scott and I were in love.
We were going to run off together.
But then you killed him.
It was an accident!
I don’t care.
You killed the man I loved.
And now it’s your turn.
Quinn’s eyes grow wide in horror…
As the doorknob slowly turns.
